    For the uninitiated: This march is called "the retreat" but the title "the return" would suit it more as it was played in the streets of Taranto to warn Italian licensed sailors that it was time to return to their ship .

    • @GenPellizzaroCSMGDF
      @GenPellizzaroCSMGDF Před 3 lety +23

      The use of the word “Retreat” here is intended as the return of the sailors and officers of the Navy to the ships or barracks after the shore leave, thus this march was played by the Compartimental Bands of Taranto and La Spezia Naval Station, in the streets of the cities to signal the men in shore leave that was time to “retreat” in the barracks, it was custom that the men followed the band in the streets, with the end of the march inside the Naval Stations of Tarano and La Spezia. It is erroneously recognised as the “Italian Navy March”, but it isn’t that. Here is the official Italian Navy March czcams.com/video/5R9ot1y0lOE/video.html

      They were a good navy. Their problems were similar to that of the rest of the Italian armed forces: poor command and supply. The supply part deals with their fuel. As far as capability however, their navy was far from second rate. Their navy was a major factor in British planning in the Mediterranean. Despite the fuel shortages, they were still a formidable force to come against. Furthermore, Mussolini made a big deal about military modernization. Arguably the best affected branch was the navy as the Littorio-class battleship was arguably a good battleship for its area. The had a sizable escort vessel fleet as well as a significant amount of submarines.
      In short, the Regis Marina was overall the best prepared branch of the Italian armed forces. In addition, it was the most modern

      Regarding weapon power and number of ships they was one of the 4 strongest (probably the strongest regarding firepower), and actually was the Regia Marina in WWII to keep alive the logistics on the Med (not the Germans as it's wrongly believed).
      Sadly for Italians they lacked of last techs, a proper bellic industry and resources. The Regia Marina lost vs the Royal Navy for three important factors:
      1. Lack of fuel (stupidly wasted by Mussolini in that nonsense attack to Greece)
      2. Lack of Radars (the Royal Navy had them, Italians nope so they was basically "blind").
      3. A too much centralized decisional Command (meanwhile the Royal Navy high command thrusted the judgment and the moves of their Captains, the Italians on contrary had all the Navy movements and logistics centralized in the High Command in Roma, with the ending result of a saturation of that High Command and so confusion. That was a big mistake, as Rommel said in his diaries of war, most of the time the Navy Captains was way better and knowledjable regarding war matter than their high Officials at the central command).
