  • Buying your first rifle is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life. SSAA TV’s Rod Pascoe looks at some of the factors to consider when buying your first rifle, including the desired action type, calibre, barrel length, weight and stock fit and whether its intended purpose is for target shooting, recreational hunting or both. Australian Shooter senior correspondent and lifetime hunter John Dunn then offers some tips for selecting a hunting rifle, including deciding what game you will be hunting, the terrain you’ll be hunting over and your general hunting style.

Just a tip, maybe look at aiming these sort of videos to the younger generation. They are the future of shooting after all once we all kick the bucket.

I'll be one of those first time buyers in just a few years, when the kids have left home. Thanks for the clip.

I bought my first rifle used at a pawn shop...a 1976 Remington 700 bolt action in .270 Winchester...that was in the 1980s and it is still my main hunting rifle up here in Alaska for Sitka blacktails, Dall sheep, Black bear and Caribou. I handload 130gr TTSX for hunting with my old .270.

Thanks for the suggestion, we will see what we can do. Please note that the process for obtaining a firearms licence and registering your firearms can differ depending on the state or territory in which you live. We encourage you to have a look at the information available at ssaa.org.au/licensing

I am looking for a gun. I don't know what to get. I want one for hunting, mostly Pigs, Kangaroos and Deer. Soon i would like to shoot Ducks and Birds. i am only young so i don't want something heavy. were i shoot it is open with no trees and some parts there are trees. I don't know much about guns but i think i want a rifle.
ps. was there a gun in that case in the last bit

Deer require either a minimum of .243 or .270 depending on the species. I'd say if you're planning to shoot mobs of pigs, a pump action Remington 7600 in .308 will kill pigs and all of those other land animals quickly, humanely and effectively out to 250 metres.
A 12G shotgun with 28 inch or longer barrels that are rated to shoot steel shot is what you want for birds. Hope this helps.
