- I decided to visit Fort William and ride the UCI World Cup DH track however I ended up leaving disappointed...
Fort William hosts the UCI World Cup for Downhill MTB and XC MTB so I decided to go and ride the World Cup track and Top Chief but the Gondola was closed due to wind. I then decided to explore the lower section of the mountain however the trails where not what I excepted...
I hope that your enjoy this video!

The first trail you rode is the world champs XC track... not black. The lower trails are pretty entertaining but like anywhere, you need a guide or local knowledge to get the most out of it! Black crane, Wild goat, rainbow nation, stolen bridge are immediately available, nevermind the bajillions of unmarked trails in the area!
With proper signage/maps you shouldn't need a guide or knowledge for waymarked/official trails. It's a basic failing of Nevis Range and always has been.
@@flippy66 agree, true for trail centre and marked trails etc. The marked trails at Nevis are now well signposted with little maps all over and have been for a good few years... perhaps simple map reading is an issue? All my students manage to navigate it no problem after some map input.
It's also a problem across Scotland due to Forestry Land Scotland reluctance to accept trails even long established trails on "their" land ... we have to keep it on the downlow to avoid official intervention.
It's the Gondola uplift and height you come down from that makes this place so unique. Hopefully you make in back in more favourable conditions but glad you took a lot from simply being in such beautiful surroundings.
Can't Wait for the Glen Tress vid
👏
Thanks for the photo 🙏
Cool seeing you in Scotland, Nevis Range is my nearest trail centre and it's still around 2.5h hrs away. It's a shame you didn't get to ride Top Chief, it's properly rough and technical with some very exposed boardwalk at the top. Gondola bike uplift usually closes for the season later this month and then it's snow sports over the winter. There's heaps more riding in the surrounding Lochaber area though, you'll have to come back in Spring/Summer!
That looked like some sweet riding....cheers 🇨🇦
Should have just hit the Golfie! Place never disappoints👌🏻
Top Chief and the world cup track are the reason you go to nevis range. Real shame you didnt manage to get up on the gondola.
If you're in Scotland, check out the Tarland trails & the new trails at Glentress
Like you said picture post card scenery good looking trails perfect for the none jumper 👍👍👍
Plenty of cracking off piste trails in the North face car park area, delivering some of fort williams finest loam conditions. A personal favourite however is the CIC hut descent (access from North Face car park) and awesome approach where you can take in the mightily impressive north face of the ben and all its crags and gullies but the descent of that trail is definitely one of my favourites around lochaber, linking it into one of the off piste trails to finish off with of course.
Great video Tom. What settings are you using on your Gopro? Really feeling the ride with your settings dude. Cheers 👍
local here.
Nevis range is THE most beginner-friendly place, and quite boring if you're after proper tech.
For good black trails, you need to go to Torlundy (surprised noone mentioend that, its close to Nevis range), Glen Loy or Kinlochleven / glencoe.
Show us around
@TomCardy ever considered going back to swinley for a video be done up quite a bit would defiantly recommend checking it out
Tom you need to go to tarland trail centre in Aberdeenshire, opened earlier this year, so fast and flowy you'd love it!! 👍
There's a couple other hidden ones a little further up that are much more intense, built by Joe Barnes etc.
We used to race XC on the third trail you rode, the old ridge line, last used for a world cup xc in 2006. Proper gnarly on 26in wheeled xc hardtail with the saddle right up. There's plenty of great riding in a more modern style at Nevis range if you know where to look but sadly the development is not so well funded as the much more accessible trail centres and bike parks down south, but hey ho we've got mountains for mountain biking! happy trails
Gutted you couldn’t get the top trails done, top chief and the dh are really good trails. The weather is a hit or a miss up there.
Sick riding tho
Me n my buddy were up there last week n had the same issue with the weather n gondola. But we did all the lowers n rode the fire road n hike a biked up to 3rd quarter of the UCI. Was insane n so much fun along with the orange runs on the side line
Looks beautiful 🤩
Dreamy!
Stunning weather today
While you're in Scotland how about some collab's with other youtubers. Streetrials with Ali Clarkson, enduro with Woolfpack Adventurs or trail riding with McTrail Rider
That could be fun! We are on quite a tight timeline but I’ll see what we can do!
weather is pish for the next two weeks at least. Hope you enjoy riding in the wind and rain 🤣@@TomCardy
Such a good call. Ali and Tom would make a really good street sesh!
That chesty cam rocks...
I thought exactly the same when we were there last year. A bit disappointed that other places were a lot better like Glenlivet or Aberfeldy.
Weather is looking perfect at FW tomorrow!
You keep having bad luck going north 😢.
Still that was a good ride, and the camers looks great, I thought superview was enough
Just got back from there last week.. some of the off piste is absolutely brilliant if you can find the right ones
Did you hit Laggan or Glencoe resort? Many think the black DH at Glencoe is the hardest and sounds like what you are looking for! Real shame you missed out on what you came to ride! Amazing riding though - enjoyed that aspect of the video :)
Glencoe looks amazing! Outside of my skill set for sure.
Looks good there mate and ut also means you need to go back in better weather ! Are you guys coming to Llandegla on your tour ..my little girl Is dying to meet Kara
Yes agreed! Not this time but will come ride there soon for sure!
Shame about the gondola. Top chief and World Cup are amazing. Loads of off piste there too that's very spicy. Maybe you'll find them next visit. Great trails at glencoe too not far from there. The black is savage.
Looks nice
It’s such a nice place!
try glenco black downhill track while your in the area there isn't much at glenco but the black track is the hardest trail centre track I've ever done its mega tech
Sick! I’ll try get there!
Should have ridden up blue doon to get to the top 😉
rippin' mate! I guess it's too high or not possible to ride up to the World Cup track then?
World cups unreal, nightmare you didn’t get to ride it, definitely worth a trip back just for that
Yes I can’t wait! Was gutted!
I love how Tom's just casually saying "It's dark in here, someone turned out the lights" and he is still flat out and manuals out of the berm. That just looked so cool. Those rock gardens looked pretty gnarly but the scenery there looks fantastic. Looks like you have more stuff to look forward to the next trip Tom if the gondolas are open. Still a great video.
Just lack of planning tbh, never go to a chairlift uplift without a plan b for weather. If you don't even know about the world champs etc then no wonder you didn't find any of the good stuff! Or do a wee diversion to kinlochleven, or whatever.
So happy to see you both in sunny Scotland! Hope you’ve both had/are having the best time 😁
Can’t believe I’ve waited so long for yourself and Kara to make a trip here and have missed an opportunity to ride the same park! 😅
You need Trailforks riding in Scotland. All the good stuff is unmarked.
Or a guide!
I just want to know how you mount your camera on your chest and it looks so good! On mine you just see the top tube.
Interesting video - thanks!
Do you necessarily need the gondola to get to the top of the World Cup DH trail? Or was the trail itself closed?
You need the lift to get to the top as it’s super steep and far so they just shut the whole trail!
Get yourselves to Innerleithen and the golfie, you'd enjoy them trails 😊
They're actually pretty samey, lacking variety of terrain and features. Tons to ride, nice and long but not the pinnacle in my opinion.
Tom, when are u next going Danbury common because me and my m8 met u a few weeks ago and we really want to ride with u there.
Won’t be for a while dude as I’m not at home! See you there soon tho!
@@TomCardy ok thank you so much, I don’t know if u remember us but we saw u there a few months ago but then we saw u recently when u we’re testing out your new haibike
I think you just went at the wrong time if you'd went when the weather was better you'd of loved it
I just want to go up the mountain and take photos.
I've never seen you compete in MTB downhill hill so your opinion of our tracks don't mean too much but if your were trying to upset all Scottish riders then we'll done i like all your vids this changed my opinion of you as a rider
Should have gone down the road and tried the glencoe track
Compared to others forty willy is quite disappointing on the lower sections. Alwyays find it hard to figure out what trails what
how much elevation are you getting out of the lyke batteries?
Today we climbed over 1000m and only used 3 bars from 5 in turbo!🤯
I think you've been a tad unfair. Maybe shouldn't come to FW in Autumn and just stick to Spring and pray for no wind, so you can get to the top? Luckily, most riders leave in love with the place. Good luck next time.
Yeah it's a big influential opinion to be banding about when it's barely scratching the surface! Could put a lot of people off... There's so much more to ride here than what we saw in the video. Can totally understand your frustration after a long drive... But give someone local a shout when you're there!
I deffo really enjoyed the trails that I rode, you can’t change the weather but as I said in the video as a place that holds the WC and has the investment for a gondola the trails at the bottom where a little underwhelming and really hard to find. If it was anywhere else that did not host the WC there would be no expectation on the Bikepark! I will be back for sure :)
That’s a fair comment however I think because it hosts the WC and has the gondola the expectation is high and the fact you would need a local to show you around is not what I imagined when arriving. I still had a great day just an honest opinion so that if people make the journey or are planning a trip thinking it’s like bikepark wales or something then they know what to expect! I’ll be back next year to ride from the top! Cheers! 🤟
First was blue second was red
Thanks!🤟
Hook up with McTrailRider (who met prince Charles lol) if you have not already. I am sure he would welcome you. No harm in reaching out. How you two met! Been following him for a while, he knows Scotland, especially the wild stuff.
Makes me think i maybe don't need a full fat ebike afterall
I haven't looked through all of your videos but, Golfie and Thornilee in the Tweed Valley offer some of the very best riding in the UK, if not anywhere.
I've been up in that gondola it's scary af with a little wind 🤣 still left disappointed didn't rate the place at all.
The lower trails at fw are absolutely shocking for somewhere that holds the wc every year.
Nevis Range is generally shit. Top Chief is a fantastic trail, but the rest is meh or worse, and the new blue descent is absolute ass.
The lack of commentary on one trail sad eveything.
First
Yo!
@@TomCardy you actually replied 😱
Fort William worlds track is like a Welsh xc track 😂. Fort William sucks
You obviously haven't explored! LOL
yeah only reason to go is the world cup course, this is a very click batey video
