- The historic Kennecott mining town is one of the last glimpses into Alaska's early days. We ventured into this abandoned town to tour the iconic red buildings, and learn more about the history of a town that was extremely important to the advancement of America in the early 20th Century. There is no way to truly describe the awe we felt wandering amongst the empty mining buildings perched on the mountainside, with views of the Kennicott glacier as far as the eye could see. We are so happy that we could share a piece of our adventure with you, and spread awareness of this beautiful relic hidden amongst the mountains. Although the journey to get here was by far our riskiest, the reward of getting to see this town in the quiet of winter was more than we could ever ask for.

There was a TV show about the people of McCarthy a few years back, in that show they showed the struggles and disagreements of the people there to turn Kennecott into a tourist attraction, I think it was on the Discovery channel.
That show must have been fake. That place looked nothing like the show. People were living there just a few years ago. Now nothing 😂😂

My great grandfather worked there back in the 1930s. I still have his letters about it somewhere. Lot of interesting stories and his time there before and after moving his wife and kids there from Ohio.

my wife an myself have been to kennekott 2 times and would go back again if we ever make it to alaska again. we stayed in Kennekott glaacier lodge and it was great. mine tour and glacier tours are a must

Great video - As someone from Australia, I had mainly seen pics/video from summer with no snow, but the snow just makes it like a fairy tale. The contrast of burnt red/white is so eye catching as well. Thank you and keep up the great work!
This is the first of your videos that I’ve watched. I jut loved seeing this ghost town. It looked like someone should walk out of the building except for the large snow build up. It was so beautiful. I can agree with your take on the surroundings. It is just breathtaking. Thank you for making this difficult trek to show us this. You have gained a fan.

There used to be a "reality" show a few years agon that had as part of its programming, a family that lived in Kennecott. Another person who lived there wanted to turn the mine into a tourist attraction even though the majority of the towns inhabitants didn't agree with him. The program went off the air without any resolution known at the time. By watching this, it appears nothing came of it.

Was this the same place that was featured in edge of Alaska with the old chap who lived near the cable car at the top. It looks like a lot of money has been put in to it since the locals had the row with the guy trying to make it a tourist destination.
I wonder what happened to the families who moved there to get away fromeverything?.

If you haven’t explored Hatcher’s pass and Independence Mine-check it out in early summer. Hatcher’s pass is beautiful. Kennecott area is beautiful as well, it’s incredible the engineering for remote Alaska.

Awesome video guys. U should go back in the summer to see the differences on the landscape and hike to the root glacier, the one you guys talked about. It's a 6 mile from the Kennicott Historical Landmark and the more you walk, the better the scenery is. It's possible doing it alone with shoes crampons but since you're walking above a glacier its risky doing it without a guide.

We are glad you enjoyed! No, we did not see anyone else the whole day. It’s an unbelievably hard place to get to. When we said it’s remote we meant it. We had the whole place to ourselves! 🙂

First building aka visitors center was there during the mining days which was the old Blackburn school and the second small structure is a shower facility..

Remember it’s a National Park with some private land mixed in.
I’ve seen mining towns before that had odd buildings like the oddly tall one (at 8:53).. they were usually the lift house (like modern day elevators). I’m not saying it is but it would explain the weird shape 😂
You guys didnt mention Rich Kirkwood who bought Kennecot in the late 70's and did most of the restorations, he had a dream to make it a tourist destination...
Hospital hosted multiple doctors and nurses throughout it's life. I have a list of employees formed of 1608 so far
From what I could see on Google maps during the time of there's no snow, it did not look abandoned they show actual businesses on there, but of course maybe that's part of McCarthy. For the most part it's in a national park from what I read.

that are so prevalent
in remote parts of Alaska and even in Southeast Alaska where there are people. And have you ever heard of Portlock? The music's a little over the top in the beginning , by the

out there on that
remote area without

bears and Sasquatch. The natives will all tell you that. And many of these mining places are abandoned because of the aforementioned. But they will never mention that.Have you
ever been to Knik glacier? That has some amazing amazing views.
So why did you decide to go there with all the snow it would be cool if you could go there when there's no snow then you could go and look in the windows or whatever I'm interested to see what it looks like inside.
High schoolers were sent to cdv or Seattle I feel sorry for them missing out on great views......pshhhh CDV has plenty of great views lol you can probably guess where I live haha

Excellent jog you guys!! My wife and I used a truck and camper and went there in the summer, ate dinner at the lodge, but did not take a tour. Learned a lot of the history of the place just now watching your video. Thank you for the work and time you took to make this happen. Really enjoyed it.

You have to talk to the elders in the area, a piece of printed paper doesn't do it justice.
I would be interested to know if Japanese workers helped build these buildings. You mentioned they served Japanese food there. Must be a reason why.

The show edge of alaska must have been fake. It looks nothing like the show.And the town was open with people living there just a few years ago. I watched every episode.

I don't care how many people try and change the name, it will always be a snowmobile. "snow machine" just sounds stupid and unnecessary.

His awesome wonders are astoundingly beautiful. all who will confess their sins to God will be forgiven thru the redemptive work of Jesus, that person can trust in Jesus's work to redem them.save them from the penalty of their sins,give them peace in their life with God, and eternal life when this life ends.
