  • What if we can use the same sharpening technique in Photoshop as NASA’s James Webb or Hubble Telescope team? In this video, we’ll test the APF-R plug-in, which automates the APF-R method for sharpening used by space telescopes and space agencies like NASA and ESA. We’ll also see how it performs with portraits and landscapes besides astrophotography. I hope you enjoy this video. Thank you so much for watching :)

    Christoph has been advocating his method for quite some time and has mastered it. He is also an ambassador of Baader, a German brand that is into telescope stuff. I have known Christoph for a good 8 years. Nicely done. NASA may not use his techniques but astrophotographers do.

    As an astrophotographer, we don't use photoshop that lot,instead we use Pixinsight,and for sharpening,we use deconvolution,and RC astro blurxterminator is so fantastic that it can sharpen defocued stars and nebulas with a click of button using scientific method

    You can get a pretty similar effect by duplicating the layer, changing blood mode to overlay and going to filter > high pass and selecting the number of pixels in combination with texture and and clarity.
    As a longtime Astro photographer, I don’t think this tool warrants nearly $50. It’s cool don’t get me wrong but for like $20 I would be a buyer maybe

    I have an honest question about this sharpening. Would you be able to get the radius or better "from center" "with depth" sharpening effect in Adobe Light Room Classic? I know I barely scratch the surface when using it myself to tone correct or touch up a "bad lighting" photo. All this taking in consideration that for me and others the price isn't bad if this sharpening is something used on a regular basis, but others might need to do this without having the funds "at the moment". Cheers! Stay Healthy and Stay Sane!

    What about noisy picture? This APF-R sounds excellent, nethertheless the astro image in your exemple was very clean in term of noise. I'm wandering how it can process a noisy astrophotography that most of us produce. Consequelty I truely believe that all your community will strongly benefit if you could please (re)test this plug-in in such a situation ?

    Is NASA being subjected to the same terms as all other Adobe subscribers? Do they lose access to everything they've done if they decline to give Adobe infinite rights to their work? I'd sure like to find out what happened when those Terms and Conditions got applied to them.

    • @komosky3706
      @komosky3706 Před 26 dny +1

      @@jjaylad You misinterpreted, he said "I got my hands my hands on this technology that space agencies like NASA with telescopes like James web have been using to sharpen their photos and guess what you you can now use it in Photoshop" It doesn't mean that NASA uses Photoshop with this plugin. Instead, it means that the same image enhancement techniques used by NASA are now available in a plugin for Photoshop. Clearly it could have been worded better but the inflections are there, plus there's the common sense part that 99.99% chance of getting his hands on highly secured government software while not even being a US citizen was possible would also explain that lol

      Topaz AI recreates details using AI learning, obviously a real astrophotographer would never use anything like AI for this. The goal of this plugin is non-destructive sharpening with real precision, without creating anything that doesn't exist.

    Thank you for this tutorial.
    This looks pretty good, but I am interested in your thoughts.
    Because this is a post-processing technique for Photoshop, I have a question about the capture sharpening settings in ACR / Lightroom when processing raw files. Should I turn them off by setting Amount to 0, leave them at Adobe’s defaults, or continue to use my basic global settings for high- and low-frequency subjects?

    • @PiXimperfect
      @PiXimperfect  Před 26 dny +1

      It’s best if you leave them be, with default settings. Because adding even a bit of sharpening can introduce noise/artifacts, and running any plug-in on top of that will only enhance it.

    • @ellisvener5337
      @ellisvener5337 Před 26 dny

      @@PiXimperfect thank you, but that also seems to mean that it would be best to set amount to zero. I guess it’s time to experiment!

    • @ellisvener5337
      @ellisvener5337 Před 26 dny

      After some experimenting, I'd like to share a couple of tips :
      1) When applying capture sharpening in the Details panel in ACR and Lightroom, etc., use a milder Amount setting than you normally do. Start with 0 (zero), but dial it up to no more than half of your standard Amoutn setting.
      2) After finding the AFP-R settings you like and finalizing the result as a Smart Object (s.o.) layer, experiment with different blend modes and opacity/ fill percentages to fine-tune the results.
      2A) if the main point of interest does not fill the frame, create a black mask for the AFP-R s.o. Layer and use the brush tool to paint white over the areas most important you think will be of greatest interest to the viewer, so the AFP-R effect only works on those white-masked areas.
