  • Dutch farmers and contractors are not only experts in reclaiming land form the sea, but also experts in deep ploughing to improve soil conditions. Specialist firm Van Werven has been carrying out this work for a long time.
    For the 2017 season two brand new top of the league Fendt tractors are used. The 1050 Vario (500 HP) and 939 Vario S4 (390 HP). Each the biggest model in their own series. Together they plough the soil up to a depth of 1.80m using a home made plough.
    Deep ploughing is done to bring sand on top and bury the heavy clay. it also increases the soil organic matter (SOM) of the soils. This makes it more versatile and easily to work with. In this particular case the field will be converted to organic farm. A range of vegetable crops can now be grown. Because the land more easily workable you can save fuel, start sooner and continue for a longer time.

      I've read somewhere that North American soils are much lighter and easier to till, so you can still get a good yield without ploughing. European soils are heavy and rich in clay, so to properly aerate it you need more agressive agrotechnical treatment. In most cases on North American soil ploughing does not give enough benefits to be economicaly justified. In Europe it almost always does.

    • @Agrifotodotnl
      @Agrifotodotnl  Před 5 lety +1

      Sand and SOM (soil organic matter) are brought up from the subsoil. These make the soil easier to work and it means they can grow a wider range of crops. Mainly vegetable crops which give a better return than cereal crops, sugar beet, etc.. It is often done by farmers who convert to organic farming, as they don't crop their farms in a traditional way. This is also the case with this farm. Hope this helps!

  • @Ruben00021
    @Ruben00021 Před 7 lety +4

    I honestly don't see how this could possibly increase the soil organic matter. Are there layers of organic matter (like peat) buried in the top 1.80m. of the soil?

      Yes there are there is peaty soil underneath which is brought to the surface and mixed with the sand and clay. You lose some % in the first years after farming it but ultimately it stabilises on a higher level than before.

      Ta plusieurs raisons. Ça peut être pour enterrer le sel dans les poelder en Hollande ou bien pour mélanger des couche de terre très argileuse avec une couche plus sableuse. En Italie tu trouvé ça aussi pour casser une couche minéral dure qui se forme à cause des évaporation d'eau. C'est évidemment très coûteux et bien sur pas fait tout les ans. Parfois juste une fois cela dépend du but recherché.

      @Christopher Windsor *The sediments are among the richest and most fertile of any river delta farmland in the world but drainage and compaction are major problems. These fields can become compacted over time and remain soggy, waterlogged for months after heavy rains causing the crops to simply rot.*

    Зачем так глубоко пахать... Самая плодородная почва уходит в глубину, а песок на верх...во времена СССР были проведены исследования об этом из чего выяснили что нет необходимости пахать в глубину, надо просто дать почве отдохнуть года 2/3

      This is in a polder with soil that is rich in minerals for the crops and that mineral rich soil is deeper cus you are plowing the top meter or so
