  • We have been needing an engine run stand for many years and we have a ton of engines that we need to get running. We have 4-5 engines at the warehouse that we need to sell, and we have a few projects with engines that need to be run in. Matt decided there isn't much going on this week and it's time to build one. We probably have the every thing in the shop to build one so why not build one for free!!

    nice build. i have a edelbrock ford Flathead i found buried th the desert.. i cleaned it up and use it as a art piece in my man cave

    Rig up a little aircraft style throttle lever/linkage on the panel.

    Next upgrade when you do the rad change get some ball values so you don't have to fill your rad everytime

    Just a thought - if you are going to be tuning carbs and so on, it would be really handy to at least have the vacuum gauge and tachometer pointing back towards the engine so that one could view those gauges from along the side of the engine - maybe have duplicate gauges. That way one doesn't have to be walking to the back to check the gauges after every adjustment tweak. It would also be nice to have an on-board dwell meter and timing light permanently wired into the switched ignition circuit, with a holster for the timing light. I built a few of these stands for my high school auto shop.

      Yes, agreed. Cheap exhaust set up with O2 sensor bung and gauge for tuning too if you want to get real crazy!!!! For those who would ask why, helps adjust carb along with vacuum gauge, but can indicate need for jet change if you can't lean it out or already to lean at higher rpms then idle (vacuum gauge only good at idle).

      @@Nowayjose-z2r Oh yeah, that's a great idea! When I was building the stands, hardly any cars even had O2 sensors on them yet (at least the cars that we worked on in HS auto shop).

    We use a mini bike gas tank with a shut off valve on it for our engine starts, it’s super easy to mount to anything

    Not bad at all , sure that was allot cheaper than buying some chinesim stand,,, with metric bolts. as a few have commented, throttle handle on the dash/ maybe some stationary mufflers on loose hangars just limit on the noise, as we all get older hearing loss sucks. "noise is cool till we get Old" great build.

    I suggest that the next upgrade to this stand be an accelerator lever on the dash. Simpler to operate with one person, plus WOW factor for demos to customers.

      And get 20 ft of flexible tubing to run the exhaust under and out the door so you can run it long and keep the shop door closed in the snow

      I cringed when you bent over to fasten the dashboard to the stand with a sharp edge pointed right at your neck, Matt. Some padding on the edges would be a good idea, IMO. Putting a '32 radiator and shell on the stand was an inspired idea on your part, BTW.

    I have been in a bunch of shops that had holes in the door to run flexible hose thru to connect to exhaust.Holes had little flap to cover opening when not in use. Not only for engine stand, but for running cars. Much quieter because noise is outside also. Mark Worman connects an entire car exhaust (sitting on jack stands) because it has mufflers and it get the noise and fumes away from stand. Also, I agree with the comment about mounting tach and vacuum gauges where you could see them standing next to engine. On our race car, we had a momentary contact pushbutton mounted on the firewall so we could "bump it over" or "spin it" while standing next to engine- adjusting valves, open points, check for TDC, etc.

    Yep just stuff around the shop. I built mine out of treadmill parts. Works great. That is what it is all about using what we have. Nice job.

    Leave a flathead on it, direct the exhaust outside and use it to heat the shop in the winter! Add a reversed fan to blow the warm air from the radiator out into the work area.

    Engine stand hint - get a cheap battery trickle charger and mount on the stand. When you park in the corner plug it in. It will save you hours of " shit the battery's flat" Ask me how I know.

    A remote starter button may come in handy. When tinkering with the carb and you want to see if starts, don't have to reach around to start it.

    That is one smooth motor! Wow, your stand will serve you well and I am sure it will double in weight as you make additions to the gauges and supports. Great stability with a running motor as we know some motors can walk right off a stand when it is not tuned. Great job and great video. My only suggestion is to shroud the fan as it looks vicious spinning !

    I suggest that you put a gas tank down low so the fuel pump would also have to work to get gas to the carb! Also agree with the throttle suggestions mounted on dash for easiler operation! A needed project for selling and demoing your motors(all questions get answered).

    Way cool! My cousin built one of these on a small trailer. He took his rebuilt mopar 6 engines to swap meets to demonstrate and sell. You could buy a used boat or utility trailer and mount that stand on it to make it portable.

    Hi;
    I would suggest, adding an on/off switch to the coil most of the time it will be in the On position, but sometime you need the coil to be NOT connected, while doing other tests..

    Get a model T oval tank and cut it down to fit on the lower left rear side of the stand, then you can use a fuel cutoff on the tank and an electric fuel pump.

    My engineer mind went to Unistrut with front, rear and side adjustable mounts for for some of the off breed engines, HEIM, OLDS, CHEV, ect but I hear you now its to test the inventory of "Flate Heads Forever" LOL.

    Man this just got me thinking again. I really wanna build a 29 model A with a 348 tri power. 1958 Impala had that so I'd imagine by 1960 they were in hotrods. Plus they look bad ass

    That's a great idea! Now I want to make one for a 327 or a 283 V8 engine stand for my brother's shop. Not shire why he never had one all the engine's he had and sold. Setting it with a small front end on it would even look cool for a selling point.
    Not to many people are looking for those old carbrated engine's anymore. Everyone wants a LS swap.

    Before you settle on an exhaust arrangement, consider looping the outlet to the front of the stand so you don't get the hot exhaust blowing on your legs (and noise) as you monitor the gauges! That's what I did, using Fenton manifolds and 180 pipes. See video attached.

    Ha! smoking hand @ 6:00 - that happens to me when I forget that my HF glove's aren't welding gloves! Nothing like burning plastic melting into the back of the hand! Or the fingers, when I grab something hot with them. I got some HF $12 TIG gloves that I use now...

    I built one a few years ago, my only regret is I did make it high enough for the cherry picker to roll under it when putting a engine on it. Something to think about if you’re going to build one.👍

    Seems it would be easier to see the gauges from the engine side rather than having to walk around or gauges that can be flipped around or a mirror set up? Still a decent setup.

      It’s tough to separate that stuff from the business now that we are both full time. We may do try to do something like that at a swap meet in the future. Try to flip up over the course of a week at Carlisle or Hershey

    If it was me i would put some pipes or mufflers on the upwards exhaust and a choke and throttle rod on it so you can be at the controls for the test

    You cold weld that little engine stand on top of the larger one. Then scoot it back so you have room for a radiator and a fan.

    Oh Matt and Mike I was reading my Cruising News newspaper sounds like Turlock swap meet is still on for January but people that want to sell have to buy there space this month.
    I'm thinking it's going to be bigger this year because it was cancel last year people want to get out and show and sell there stuff. The paper was pact with parts and car's and truck's for sale. I want to find someone in my family or friends that have a truck to go to the swap meet. The last time I went lost out on a great deal's because I didn't have anyway to bring big things home no truck. I have a huge list to buy stuff for my 1947 Chevy Coupe. To dress it up.

    What is the voltage on your drill press? I ask because it sounds like a 3 phase motor that is single phasing.

    52 years ago I traded a 56 Chrysler 354 Hemi engine for a nice running 1950 Ford sedan. It had a 8BA engine with 3spd. od tranny. The odd thing about the engine was it had studs and nuts to hold the cylinder heads on. I have seen a lot of 49 to 53 Ford and Mercury engines over the years, but they all had head bolts. Any thoughts on this ?
