At show time Floor has been under a bad case of flu and popping pills all day...you will never know by hearing her. The show must go on and boy...it did! This is a testament to her professionalism, charchter, stamina and commitment to her Army.

Elvenjig is a traditional Irish jig cover and Elvenpath is done by Tuomas. And yep, you don't blow the Uilleann pipes unlike the more famous Scottish bagpipes (big lungs needed). The bag of the Uilleann pipes is inflated by means of a small set of bellows strapped around the waist and the arm and the bag which the bellows fill is clamped under the other elbow. Because you don't have to blow the air the pipers can converse or sing while playing.
Troy is playing Uilleann pipes, which are Irish in origin, but within the bagpipe family.
This is how Floor sounds when she isn't feeling good :) for me personal its enough to wipe the "floor" with 2 or 3 pop divas at the same time :)
Those are Irish bagpipes. They are called uilleann pipes. They are not electric. Think ‘party in third class’ from Titanic. Lol
Greetings from Finland! During their South American shows in 2018 the whole band went through a serious flu & in Bogota Floor was really sick, but still somehow managed to sound almost 100%. She also commented this Nightwish live video about it & told in one recent interview that she could hardly talk.
The amazing thing about that first piece is its basically a Nightwish jam with Troy, done just for the show, watch Marko and Emppu facing each other looking at what each other are playing so as to match and Troy is playing a mish mash of irish folk riffs on the low D whistle and Uilleann pipes .And the only other Person i know had the same set up as Marko is Geddy lee of Rush .Not to mention Floor was ill !!!
Irish Uilleann pipes. Literally elbow pipes, powered by bellows which you can see under Troy's right arm. At one time every county in the British Isles, Ireland, Northern Europe had a different kind of Bellows pipe. Northumbrian pipes, a county in England is probably considered the "sweetest" but tiny compared to this 19th century development. Scottish bagpipes are based on war pipes and considered to be quite primitve generaly. Although don't tell a Scot, Canadian or several of your States that in passing :) THee

More Marcos doubleneck bass/gtr playing: NW "The Islander" Tampere Live and "While Your Lips Are Still Red" Wembley Live.
Troy thinks they are the only stainless steel Uillean pipes in the world. He found the traditional wooden ones were too affected by changes in atmosphere. Personally I'd have splashed out for Titanium - light, relatively inert, and strong enough that even the most enthusiastic baggage handler couldn't dent them (also horrendously expensive)
Marco is an exclusive artist of "Warwick", a german instrument-maker.
They constructed the double guitar/base for him, making it unusually lightweight for such a thing so he can walk around a lot with it.
Troy plays the Irish uilleann pipes. This is the first Nightwish song on the first Nightwish record. 24 years old. Elvenjig is not on a record. It was worked up on tour to intro this song. Love this song. Also loved your reaction Mat and Chels. Peace.

Elvenpath is an older song and they played on the Decades Tour where there's less fan faves. Setlist was more like a catalogue of songs.
Elvenpath is 23+ yrs old, from the first album, which was essentially a collection of demos. And Tuomas does a lot of the male vocals on that one. 😉 But I have to say Marko does a better job of it. Even geniuses like Tuomas have their limitations.

Last of the wilds live at Wacken! Instrumental masterpiece
Marco's doublenecker is custom made, modified from the Warwick Infinity. He uses it from time to time, perhaps the Islander @ Tampere 2015 is a good example. Troy's Uillean pipes aren't electric strictly speaking, however the sound goes through an amp and whatever other effects they have.
Marko's double neck Infinity/Panthera bass/guitar was made specially for him by Warwick and Framus. There are many kinds of double necked instruments, most commonly a 12 string with a 6 string guitar, but I've also seen a mandolin paired with a 6 string. The first bass/guitar double neck I am familiar with was Greg Lake's (of Emerson Lake and Palmer) Zemaitis from about 1973. Obviously most useful when you have to switch between instruments mid-song, you don't often see them used otherwise, because they tend to be heavy.
I've never seen Marko use a single-neck six string (at least not in Nightwish), but there are several songs where he brings out the double neck. Notably "The Islander" (live in Tampere, czcams.com/video/Zo8ncK_5kzc/video.html) which I think you'd enjoy, especially if you liked this one.

*I also highly recommend the original album version of "Last Of The Wilds", which features a finnish traditional instrument called kantele, that is not featured in the Live@Wacken 2013 version. Same goes for the song "The Islander", where you also need to listen to the album version or watch the Original Music Video, because the live version differs too much from the original version. Only for the song "I Want My Tears Back" you can just take the Live version because it's sounds almost 100% like the studio version.*

Most people don't get this, but the spoken part in the middle of Elvanpath (starting at 9:56), that goes "Long ago, in the early years of the Second age, the Eleven-smiths forged the Rings of Power", is a quote by Gandalf from the 1978 animated Movie "Lord of the Rings".
Also, please, don't pause during guitar solos. It's a rule of thumb.

My two first songs from Nightwish, "Elvenpath" and "The Carpenter" 1996. Until this time, i am one of the greatest fan from Nightwish, but if i hear the Male singer in "The Carpenter" i thought, what a terrible voice and i hoped he does´nt do it every time once more. He hear me. It was Toumas, a genuis but he can´t sing.
