CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger) tells The Monster (Boris Karloff) that he can make him a companion.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This greatest of all Frankenstein movies begins during a raging thunderstorm. Warm and cozy inside their palatial villa, Lord Byron (Gavin Gordon), Percy Shelley (Douglas Walton), and Shelley's wife Mary (Elsa Lanchester) engage in morbidly sparkling conversation. The wicked Byron mockingly chastises Mary for frightening the literary world with her recent novel Frankenstein, but Mary insists that her horror tale preached a valuable moral, that man was not meant to dabble in the works of God. Moreover, Mary adds that her story did not end with the death of Frankenstein's monster, whereupon she tells the enthralled Byron and Shelley what happened next. Surviving the windmill fire that brought the original 1931 Frankenstein to a close, the Monster (Boris Karloff) quickly revives and goes on another rampage of death and destruction. Meanwhile, his ailing creator Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) discovers that his former mentor, the demented Doctor Praetorius (Ernst Thesiger), plans to create another life-sized monster -- this time a woman! After a wild and wooly "creation" sequence, the bandages are unwrapped, and the Bride of the Monster (Elsa Lanchester again) emerges. Alas, the Monster's tender efforts to connect with his new Mate are rewarded only by her revulsion and hoarse screams. "She hate me," he growls, "Just like others!" Wonderfully acted and directed, The Bride of Frankenstein is further enhanced by the vivid Franz Waxman musical score; even the film's occasional lapses in logic and continuity (it was trimmed from 90 to 75 minutes after the first preview) are oddly endearing. Director James Whale was memorably embodied by Ian McKellen in the Oscar-winning 1998 biopic Gods and Monsters.

1:52 "I love dead. Hate living." Karloff delivered that line so well.
I absolutely love how Pretorius happily greets the Monster as an old friend who's made a surprise call. I'd love to see someone treat Jason Voorhees this way, but Jason doesn't give a shit.
Pretorius is a gem in this movie. He is THE best mad scientist.
Anyone else wanted to give the Monster a hug when he says, "Smoke. Friend?"
Always! He's so sweet and adorable!
Sorry to be off topic but does anyone know a way to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my login password. I love any help you can offer me.
@Nicolas Jax instablaster =)
@Jairo Jake thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Karloff's delivery is heartbreaking. He's so lost, lonely, traumatized, and desperate for companionship. We know this relationship will not end well. Praetorius ruthlessly uses the Monster for the rest of the film and gets the comeuppance he deserves.
A classmate and I acted this out for our final project for a my college drama class. He portrayed the monster, because he was larger and more stage-shy, and I was Pretorius. The only change I made was to make Pretorius act a bit less smooth when he first see's the monster-sort of like he is surprised, but quickly adapts and see's how he can use it. We got an A.
Daniel Ryan Awesome!
the way he lights up when he says "i want friend like me" makes me way more emotional than it should
how the Monster says "woman, friend... wife..." is almost sad when you see the ending because you know that he is a very human character that you feel pity for because he just wants to be loved
He's saying... Woman, friend, why?
The monster is homocidal.
@@CuriousMutation I know this is really late, but he says wife, not why. You can see him sounding the F out
@@peterhatzioannides7120 when provoked
@@AceLM92 little Maria did not provoke him.
He wasnt even scared when the creature walked up on him.
WHAT UP? I wouldn’t be either honestly
The Doctor would have been a great Joker. I love how he just laughs at a skull and is so nonchalant about a monster just walking in out of nowhere.
"Oh. I thought I was alone. Good evening."
Observe the incredible lighting in this scene. It is so breathtaking that it blows me away every time I see it. But when you combine it with the equally brilliant performances of all the wonderful character actors in it, it become something of legend.
All movie critics would agree, that B of F, is far better than the first movie. The "monster" and all the characters have so much more depth.
@@scubarojo
I suppose, like anything else, improvements would occur with an evolving creature. That said, in the case of "Alien," the endless sequels to Ridley Scott's masterpiece only got worse... *much worse.*
I love it when he tells the graverobbers that he's going to stick around for a bit...."I rather like it here."
He wasn't even scared when Frankenstein showed up, he must've seen some shit
Because he's the Dr Frankenstein
@@MsSharondenadel No. He's Dr Pretorius. Dr Frankenstein's former mentor.
@@trasegorsuch5140 My bad, i have very blurr memories of this one 🙂
I love how Dr. Pretorius is busting a gut all by himself. Crypts have always been known for fun hangouts.
What are you talking about? He's got company! The skull really knows how to tickle his funny bone.
@@TECH097 I think the skull is dead funny too
Well Pretorius isn't your normal scientist.
Actually, this movie is a very clever dark comedy at times
James Whale direced it that way.
There is an interesting allegory at work here. When the monster approached Pretorius, he is only the second person to have a normal relaxed reaction to him, the first being the blind hermit. That means, in the monsters mind, he must be someone he can trust, who can be a friend like the hermit.
The monster is a tabula rasa, a blank slate in which different morals, values and rules of behavior, created by mankind, can be thrust upon him. Like in the novel, he is newly formed, an innocent subject to any experience (or corruption) that he may stumble upon. He gets lucky with the hermit, who begins to teach him the difference between good and evil. But then he is cast out by intruders ( John Carradine and a friend) who do not ask questions or give him a chance but judge him soley on his previous reputation as a marauder. Then he goes to Pretorius, who accepts him readily and without question. Why not trust him? But Pretorius 's intentions are motivated by ambition, ego, and power. The monster does not know this, but becomes part of Pretorius 's scheme. So.... He has been subjected to both influences of good and evil. And it is also interesting that, though he remains within Pretorius's influence for the remainder of the story, and gets ultimately betrayed by that which he waited so long for, he recognizes the distinction between his own creator, Frankenstein, as something still good, and Pretorius, who is evil. He destroys both himself and Pretorius as a last act of morality, showing that the little good he experienced in his short life had a more lasting effect on him. I think this was intentional on Whales part, and is really the moral center of the film.
Pretorius is like what would happen if Oscar Wilde's and Professor Farnsworth's personalities were shoved into Peter O' Toole and someone turned the evil dial all the way up.
He's fabulous.
@2:02, “we must have a long talk..” am I the only one who wished we could have seen that long talk? I just love Dr. Pretorius! Ernest Thesiger and Boris Karloff completely nailed this scene! 🎉❤
Imagine seeing someone laughing and enjoying a cigar "with" a skull. 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 WTF????
"I love dead, hate living"
Don't we all?
Me too, bud.
Count me in Billy Cobb 👍
You're wise in your generation
"love dead, hate living". 💜😪💔
Ernst Thesiger - what a brilliant actor. I never knew his name for years. Now he's getting the acclaim he's always deserved.
how dr pretorius saids i thought i was alone he is one sick dude one of the best maddest dr!!!!!
One of my favorite scenes from any movie. The set is perfect as is the music (also used in the 1930s' Flash Gordon serials). Pretorius is over the top nuts! Love that Franky (despite his atrocious table manners)!
1:53 I agree sometimes man... I feel you...
It may be because the frankenstein monster look has become almost a pastiche now...whereas it wouldn't have looked like that to the audience of the thirties...but to just simply look at the image of the monster now, it just seem's ridiculous to be scared or empathetic with it at all...but Karloff just add's that certain something, with very little actually being said, that just seem's to bring it all together. You can tell what a great actor he was to act so well through all that make up and bring out the humanity, and even the terror, of the monster. As I say, I can't entirely see the monster without a jaundiced modern eye, but the scene where he gets angry with his bride for refusing him and and causes his own destruction is pretty unnerving, still.
I like the lighting at about the 6 second mark, as well as the background music, "Danse Macabre" by Franz Waxman. This clip is one of the best scenes in the movie, but for me, the best is clip 3, where the Monster is taught to speak by the hermit. BoF is the best movie in the whole franchise.
My favorite Movie❤Ever!!!
The monster just helping himself to the man's food. Lol.
If you notice the monster does not eat the meat..He chomps down on the bones..
this is a great example of how to treat and interact with others . pretorious doesn't see a hideous hulk but a wounded soul in need . although pretorious uses the monster to help him with his plans
"You make man?" "No. Woman." Weird Science!
It's alive.....ALIVE!!!
It's cool that The Monster can talk.
He becomes very articulate in the book, and this is reflected in this movie to a lesser extent, with the Monster gaining a wider vocabulary and becoming more comfortable with speaking as the movie goes on, performed wonderfully by Karloff.
Karloff has a fantastic way of delivering the monster's stunted vocabulary with maximum emotional power. Boris was a brilliant actor - one of the greatest.
1:13 WEIRD SCIENCE
Two most pointing quotes from the Monster actually come at the end: "She hate me, just like others!" And: "You stay, we belong dead!"
Those are my favorite lines from this movie. Say it all the time...
One of my favourites. Franz Waxman's score is stunning. Although every time I see Ernest Thesiger I think of Benedict Cumberbatch!
I love how, at the start of the scene, Dr. Pretorius is just chillin' in a crypt with a midnight picnic, laughing hysterically as he gets hammered out of his mind, as ya do. Gods, he's the best. How he never got his own spin-off movie while Ernest Thesiger was still alive, I'll never know.
James play also uses Ernst as a juror in the old dark house with Karlov, Charles Laughton
Oh how awesome it would have been to get a Dr. Pretorious spin off film with actor Ernest Thesiger in the lead role! Such a missed opportunity… Bride of Frankenstein is one of my all time greatest films!
How I first recall seeing this Movie during The Summer of 1972 at a Neighbors Carnival and shortly before seeing an animated version of it on the abc Saturday Super Star Movie.
Praetorious!! The Original MAD Scientist!!!
The bad influence on the creation of Henry Frankenstein...
What about Herbert West from Re-Animator? what do you think of him?
Rotwang from Metropolis predates him
Bad influence on the Frankenstein monster?
.....You can sure as hell say that again!! LOL
That grunt @ 0:19 kills me every time! 😂😂😂
01:13 - 01:25 *Code Lisa opening starts*
Pretouris Is Such A Sick Guy. I love him.
1:13 - 1:21 And then Oingo Boingo cues up “Weird Science”.
1:58 Oh, the many times I've used that line in my life after hearing some of the most assanine things
He's...LEARNING!❤❤❤
Guy that plays Pretorius is amazing in this
"Oh i thought i was alone "
He was high as a kite enjoying that weed. 0:08
Man, talk about your mad scientists! Franky just got tired of trying to find someone on E-Harmony.
“Monster, Friend, Good”
Why can you watch the whole original Frankenstein movie but this one only in clips? And have to sit through an ad on every single one so far.
I think the Monster ate the bones.
“WOMAN. FRIEND”
This is literally every guy ever
Poor fellow. He knew who he was. He preferred death to life.
Thank you.
Petorius is suppose to be gay. James whale wanted to insinuate he may be. By his flamboyant liberache type behavior.
+what up my neighbor! I believe there was also a novel based off the movie where Pretorius tells Henry "You have the option of reproduction by conventional means. But I have only the scientific."
It would TAKE a spook like Dr. Praetorious to make friends with Frankensteins' monster. OP Heggie did it because he WAS a good man.
It's Ernest Thesiger. O.P. Heggie played the blind hermit.
@@JoshMaxPower that's his point. OP Heggie was the good man
I pop out a shadow I'll be like what is he laughing about
Reminds me of Herman and Lily Munster
Yes, I know. Made me from dead. I love dead. Hate living.
Pretorius should try making a human centipede from the dead.
He would for sure be into that.
1:52 Me and you both man, me and you both
0:31 me when I go to my ganja dealer
Wolfs it down like Herman Munster at Thanksgiving! ( also b@w)
To bad the monsters mate rejects him.
Ernest Theisinger was John Lydon many years ago 👌
Hmm who knew alcohol was good
He was a mean one, that crazy doc

The actor's name was Ernest Thesiger.
@@christiandenault7606 I thought nobody would know his real name. 👍♥️😊

I used to watch this on channel 1111 o'clock at night among the show very well bell gozi Frankenstein the Wolf family favourite shows everything one and Wolf mantle was good
Movie...Good...
There is a lingering debate about whether Doctor Pretorius is gay. For the most part I think its a real dumb conversation to have, but lets be honest-Pretorius definitely has some flamboyant tendencies, as demonstrated in this scene.
There's a flashback sequence in "Gods and Monsters" where Ian Mackellan as James Whale is directing and says "you know Pretorious was a little in love with Dr. Frankenstein."
Poor monster
yup
me make little monsters with wife.
They're my only weakness
If he has 2 brains does he have to livers XD
Miraculous ( 4/10) _ A toro de goguinha

Frankenstein can talk wow amazing impressive good job honey you can talk wow
Weird Science
What is the monster eating?
Bread possibly.
That’s a bit of “comic relief”.
brittle tastin chicken. Good?? yuck. Maybe it was peanut brittle.
There is a long running theory that Doctor Pretorius is gay. I think this reading perhaps a little too far into it, but Pretorius most definitely has some flamboyant tendencies.
Nightmare Nerd It’s his only weakness. 🤣
I thought that was gin! :(
He learned very quickly about the finer things in life. Cigars, wine, and a woman.
