I filmed this from 2-4am when the record was released and I have to say Iâm loving the contemplative quaran-taylor vibes sheâs brought us on this record. By the time Hoax hits I'm just lying in my bed staring into the void. I can't even complain, I thank Taylor for giving me that suffering.
The first verse of epiphany is inspired by her grandfather who served in the armed forces, she portrays a war field, while the second verse is inspired by the current pandemic
The best track on the album but omg itâs a gut punch
"my tears ricochet" is probably about Borchetta and BMR. "'cause Iâlovedâyou,âI swear Iâloved you 'til myâdying day", Taylor has previously referred to her death in the iconic line from her lead single for reputation, âLook What You Made Me Doâ. "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" maybe is about her leaving BMR exposing to public what they did. In the lines "You wear the same jewels that I gave you
as you bury me", the jewels represent Swiftâs six albums (from her debut up until 2017âs reputation) that were released under her former label Big Machine Records. Although Swift didnât willingly give the music to the label, she had no control over its fate and was forced to lose most of the rights for the albums.
The specificity of comparing the albums to âjewelsâ could also be Swift boasting of the unmatched success of the records. Her 2014 album 1989 has sold over 10 million copies worldwide, and her sophomore album Fearless is the most awarded country album of all time with 35 awards. Even as Big Machine was attempting to âburyâ Swift and her accusations by throwing insults and tearing her down, they will still continue to profit off of her plentiful âjewels.â "And when you can't sleep at night (You hear my stolen lullabies)". Her old record label stole her songs.

the 1 is Taylor daydreaming about the what-ifs of a failed relationship.

cardigan, betty and august are 3 parts of a teenage love triangle:
cardigan is told from the perspective of Betty after finding out she was cheated on and knowing this person would eventually want her back (I knew youâd miss me once the thrill expired/ And youâd be standinâ in my front porch light)
betty is told from the perspective of James (either a boy or a girl) swearing the affair was only a summer fling (Slept next to her, but/ I dreamt of you all summer long)
august is told by the other girl who knows that this is wrong (Canceled plans just in case youâd call/ And say, âMeet me behind de mallâ) and also knows this is fleeting because James still loves Betty (So much for summer love and saying âusâ /âCause you werenât mine to lose)

She endured a lot of the same criticism Taylor and many women in the spotlight face in their careers (being too loud, not knowing her place, ruining a good manâs life, being a mad woman, etc.)
exile is a duet between two ex-lovers wondering what went wrong (âCause you never gave a warning sign /I gave so many signs)
my tears ricochet might be about being betrayed by the guy who owned her songs (dude wouldnât let her buy her own music but sold it to someone she hated) (And when you canât sleep at night/ You hear my stolen lullabies)
mirrorball is about reflecting other peopleâs personalities/ideas of who you should be but feeling like you canât be authentic (Iâm a mirrorball/ I can change everything about me to fit in)
seven is about childhood love that never dies (Cross your heart, wonât tell no other/ And though I canât recall your face/ I still got love for you)
this is me trying is her recognizing that she makes mistakes and is still trying to be better (And maybe I donât quite know what to say/ But Iâm here in your doorway)
illicit affairs is about what itâs like to be the mistress in a relationship and how when the thrill fades it becomes quite tragic (What started in beautiful rooms/ Ends in meetings in parking lots)
invisible string is about remembering all the little things in her life that lead her to finding Joe like they were destined to meet (And isnât it just so pretty to think/ All along there was some/ Invisible string/ Tying you to me?)
mad woman is about how she is often turned into a villain in her own story and portrayed as this crazy bitch by the media. Itâs also about the people who have betrayed and hurt her but act surprised when she refuses to just take it quietly (No one likes a mad woman/ You made her like that)
epiphany is both about her grandfathersâ time in the military and doctors and nurses during the pandemic. It talks about struggling in this âwarâ and only finding peace in your dreams
peace is also about her relationship with Joe. Itâs about being able to promise him everything except for a peaceful and drama-free life (Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?)

Taylor and Joe are still very much together .. her story telling is incredible and itâs about a love triangle with 3 characters this whole album is a dream with Taylorâs vocals in the fore front with the exception of exile which moved me more than I can express.. This is Taylor at her best and every writer that is mentioned or help direct this album are brilliant and deserve awards across every platform there nominated in and they better be..

William Bowery is Joe Alwyn! Taylor confirmed it, he wrote the chorus to Betty and he wrote Exile, like how!? Exile is so deep and Betty is just great, Joe looks to be a pretty good songwriter it seems
I have to say this was a very refreshing and stress free reaction, I have gone through so many where there's about 20 pauses per song to go on a five minute tangent and it can get frustrating. Shoutouts to the Invisible String love! That is my favourite on the album and I swear I hardly ever see anyone talking about it

Personal favourite is "betty" (and not because it's probably the most commercial) and the "clean" version is just as good. It has a great story wrapped in there, classic key change and she's singing as a 17 yo called James. Does this reference James Taylor who she's named after ?
The names are Blake Lively/Ryan Reynold's kids (all girls--James' voice has been used by Taylor before. They are close friends). The story comes from a Friends episode. In the song, James is a boy.

Exile with Bon Iver; Last Time with Gary Lightbody. Two songs with which I relate way too much. My wife left the marriage after 41 years to heal from childhood trauma. The process has been painful for me beyond description but I will not give up hope even after 7 years apart. She is so worth it. She has my heart.

not all the songs are about her. Read her forward on the album, it explains what she used to write this. Taylor pretty much wrote the lyrics and melodies, and wrote to their music this time.
