And she dead pan looked at me and just asked "Who hurt you?". And I told her when I was growing up kids were meant to be seen not heard, don't speak unless spoken to, and lots of other stuff that I don't need to go into on here... But this kind of music came along and said what we were feeling, and we could release our feelings in a positive way and deal with the crushing world around us. It would free us from the pressures, the pain, the anger... and we could handle lifes hard hits.
I'm not personally of the same generation, but I was raised by my grandparents, so that's the same way it was for me. The weirdest thing for me was that none of my friends had to deal with it like that at home, but I did, and I didn't understand for a really long time what the difference was.

'Clown' ... etc. After KoRn's success, Jonathan Davis became a father to sons Nathan (from his 1st marriage) ... Zeppelin Davis, Pirate Davis (from his 2nd marriage to late wife Deven) and he got full custody of his younger sons. He admits he's close to all his boys and doesn't want to repeat his parents' mistakes and blunders that cost Jonathan his childhood innocence. It's a heavy subject, childhood abuse... But I had to recognize it first, because in my life, it was so bad that I can't remember years of my childhood because of the physical and mental abuse I suffered... My mom still denied that she was responsible for the trauma she inflicted on me and my brother. My dad was twice married and abandoned his 3 children to remarry; not the guy we all thought he was at all... My ex-fiancee had her life ruined by incest, rape and sexual abuse as a minor and passed down that damage to her children and all her exes... Others flat-out deny the abuse and act like it was 'no big deal'... but I still see the trauma when they become hostile and often lose their tempers and minds. Most people do not want to talk about it, and that is frustrating for those of us who seek to identify and correct that kind of behavior towards minors.

I think you nailed the interpretation. Physical and emotional abuse are horrible for children and young adults to go through, but this is about finding hope and refuge in the music and with others who have experienced getting beaten down.

There are some great tunes and I know people push for Daddy but it is a HARD and DARK song about sexual abuse and it is tough to listen to. This is my favorite band and I saw them perform that live and I was sobbing in the crowd and the song is one I skip a lot because it is so raw so do that one much later on. It is an important song but a very hard listen.

I was Goth when Korn first come out as well. I am still goth at heart. Just haven't had time in Years to actually goth out. As a family man who works a public job, have to keep up the persona to make the status quo lol ! But I still love my gothic inspirations as well as bands like Korn !

Hot Topic is not even 'near' the 'real' Goth out we used to do. To even get a real whole upper bodied corset these days is well over $100+. So yeah, nope can't afford anything like that anymore but the music I'm still heavy into even though things like Cradle of Filth is not near my favorite band even tho as we both stated we're still Goth at heart. My top 3 bands are: "Queen, Korn, and then Slipknot. Right after them is Motionless in White, FFDP,, and then believe it or not Falling in Reverse. : )

Music is always there when you need it. I know music has saved my life before. Music that nobody would expect like Korn, Coal Chamber, Cradle of Filth. They got me through some bad times. The right music can make you forget the pain for a while.

This is a really heavy subject depicted in a really raw way and a lot of people get freaked out about it (I don't really blame them) and they won't even try to recognize the art in it, which I believe you can still do even if it's not your jam. But I'm happy you did! Snuff by Slipknot is for sure heavy but it will surprise you how non heavy (as in heavy metal) the sound is especially for Slipknot. For people who've only heard a couple Slipknot songs it's hard to imagine it's even a Slipknot song. And I'm sure you won't think Snuff is too much for you when you hear it. It's just a beautifully heartfelt song more than anything else. I think people make Snuff sound weirder than it is. If you don't listen to the lyrics it's just a beautiful heartfelt song. And even lyrically it is definitely not as brutal as Falling away from me. And you handled this one great so you will have no problem with Snuff!
I was physically and emotionally abused by my stepfather for almost 10 years, sometimes severely. He came into my family when I was about 2 years old, and he didn't like that I was still wetting the bed, even though I was already 4 or 5 years old. The torment also involved inappropriate behavior, and no one did anything about it. I couldn't talk to anyone because most people didn't notice, and the rest didn't think it was that bad. My stepfather was an alcoholic, and due to the circumstances, I started drinking myself when I was just 13. At 14, I almost died from alcohol poisoning. At 15, I added marijuana, and by 19, I was using ecstasy, cocaine, and crystal meth. I was getting wasted every day until I was 29 to numb all the pain. I went through self-harm, psychosis, restraints in psychiatric wards, and suicide attempts. I feel this song so deeply. I have tears in my eyes every time I hear it. I thank Jonathan for addressing this issue. There are so many children who suffer and have no one to talk to about it. It's simply an amazing song with incredibly deep meaning. Back in the 90s rock was a big part of pop music and it was directly putting forward the darkness, pain, and mental health issues that had been kind of pushed out of public awareness previously. The coolest bands were the ones who tapped into the aggression, tabboo sexuality and emotional sickness of humanity. Every generation thinks the music of their own youth was the best, but this stuff really connected with us 90s kids back in school
You hit the nail on the head. Im a survivior of childhood abuse, and this song speaks to my soul. It sounds like the pain we go through and the voices circling in our head in the aftermath of trauma. I love this song because it makes me feel seen and less alone. The trauma never leaves you. I'm 38 and despite all the therapy and healing I've done, I'm still brought to my knees from time to time from the pain that lingers.

This came out when I was 15/16, and I was in a brutal depression. I had dropped out of school, and just wanted to d*e. I used to watch this video crying along with the girl, just as hard. It was actually a form of relief to be able to cry/scream out my pain along with someone, even though they were fictional.
As a child of abuse, married to a child of a different type of abuse (me physical, her cult isolation), I've got to say, I'm thankful you didn't go through it. Some scars can't be hidden by clothes and they are way harder to overcome. I have flashbacks and core memories around it. She never fully liberated herself. We spent years abusing each other, but thankfully that's over. It's rough.

KoRn is in the box initially. My take was always that she - like so many of us at that time - was finding her escape from the misery of her life in their music. Then they came out of the box as she went out the window to join the neighborhood kids. She found her support network like the fans of this kind of music have always found support within the group. Despite some of the stereotypes, the crowds at metal and numetal shows are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. The artists generally won't tolerate any less. David Draiman of Disturbed halted a concert mid-song once because a little girl in the audience got scared by the pyrotechnics

I suffered sexual abuse from my father since I have memory. I remember myself when i was a teenager having that type of feelings, shouting inside myself, trying to not suffering any more, fighting with my own trying to keep going. @@TheOmegaRain I'm actually disabled now and in my early 40's. I'd still Goth out all day and night if it didn't cost an extreme amount to dress the way I did as I did in my teens and early 20s. Hot Topic is not even 'near' the 'real' Goth out we used to do. To even get a real whole upper bodied corset these days is well over $100+. So yeah, nope can't afford anything like that anymore but the music I'm still heavy into even though things like Cradle of Filth is not near my favorite band even tho as we both stated we're still Goth at heart. My top 3 bands are: "Queen, Korn, and then Slipknot. Right after them is Motionless in White, FFDP,, and then believe it or not Falling in Reverse. : )
korn is a whole vibe man, the first band i really got into as a 10 year old. i was born 1990. seen them many times. johnathan davis. as a vocalist is the voice to many that have been hurt. cheers man.

What you’re saying here at 6:11 is exactly spot on. The only way you can let out how you’re feeling is through the aggressive sounds made through the music. As an adult of child abuse, especially in the 90’s, bands like this helped us vent soooo much. Koяn is my fav band of all time because their lyrics were so relatable and if they weren’t, the sound was a nice expression.

So many Korn songs.. Got the Life, Blind, Coming undone are a few of the my favs, more but cant think right now.
Jonathan was severely abused as a child. His song Daddy is crushing hit home hard. He gave all of us that dealt with stuff like this growing up a voice and that we weren't alone.
Music is always there when you need it. I know music has saved my life before. Music that nobody would expect like Korn, Coal Chamber, Cradle of Filth. They got me through some bad times. The right music can make you forget the pain for a while.
You were spot on with this one! This is a really heavy subject depicted in a really raw way and a lot of people get freaked out about it (I don't really blame them) and they won't even try to recognize the art in it, which I believe you can still do even if it's not your jam. But I'm happy you did!
Snuff by Slipknot is for sure heavy but it will surprise you how non heavy (as in heavy metal) the sound is especially for Slipknot. For people who've only heard a couple Slipknot songs it's hard to imagine it's even a Slipknot song.
And I'm sure you won't think Snuff is too much for you when you hear it. It's just a beautifully heartfelt song more than anything else.
I think people make Snuff sound weirder than it is. If you don't listen to the lyrics it's just a beautiful heartfelt song.
And even lyrically it is definitely not as brutal as Falling away from me.

I was physically and emotionally abused by my stepfather for almost 10 years, sometimes severely. He came into my family when I was about 2 years old, and he didn't like that I was still wetting the bed, even though I was already 4 or 5 years old. The torment also involved inappropriate behavior, and no one did anything about it. I couldn't talk to anyone because most people didn't notice, and the rest didn't think it was that bad.
My stepfather was an alcoholic, and due to the circumstances, I started drinking myself when I was just 13. At 14, I almost died from alcohol poisoning. At 15, I added marijuana, and by 19, I was using ecstasy, cocaine, and crystal meth. I was getting wasted every day until I was 29 to numb all the pain. I went through self-harm, psychosis, restraints in psychiatric wards, and suicide attempts.
I feel this song so deeply. I have tears in my eyes every time I hear it. I thank Jonathan for addressing this issue. There are so many children who suffer and have no one to talk to about it. It's simply an amazing song with incredibly deep meaning.

Back in the 90s rock was a big part of pop music and it was directly putting forward the darkness, pain, and mental health issues that had been kind of pushed out of public awareness previously. The coolest bands were the ones who tapped into the aggression, tabboo sexuality and emotional sickness of humanity. Every generation thinks the music of their own youth was the best, but this stuff really connected with us 90s kids back in school
You hit the nail on the head. Im a survivior of childhood abuse, and this song speaks to my soul. It sounds like the pain we go through and the voices circling in our head in the aftermath of trauma. I love this song because it makes me feel seen and less alone. The trauma never leaves you. I'm 38 and despite all the therapy and healing I've done, I'm still brought to my knees from time to time from the pain that lingers.
their songs are deep bro. Johnathan had a REALLY rough life and he tells his story through his lyrics. He also speaks for other people and their trauma.
This came out when I was 15/16, and I was in a brutal depression. I had dropped out of school, and just wanted to d*e. I used to watch this video crying along with the girl, just as hard. It was actually a form of relief to be able to cry/scream out my pain along with someone, even though they were fictional.
As a child of abuse, married to a child of a different type of abuse (me physical, her cult isolation), I've got to say, I'm thankful you didn't go through it.
Some scars can't be hidden by clothes and they are way harder to overcome. I have flashbacks and core memories around it. She never fully liberated herself. We spent years abusing each other, but thankfully that's over.

Korn is one of my favorite bands. In Freak, i believe its called scat. Love their vibe. A lot of neglected abused kids found an outlet in their music.❤

Korn are in the box the girl is holding - the green background is the same as the lining of the box. That's why the band members are looking up at some points during the video. They are looking up at the girl who is looking in the box.
I love seeing your experience through korn and what they portray so beautifully. The angst, pain, sadness of the youth that grows through abusive environments. Songs like “got the life” displays the unique sound that Korn has and Jonathan’s vocals are pretty legit and dynamic through the song. Keep doing what you do man, it’s legit.

Damn, you, interpreting the video and lyrics as "not being able to protect yourself" hit hard. And it's true.
It's all kinds of abuse mental, emotional, physical. The box represents a place to run away to. A safe place. The kids coming to the aid and getting away from the abuse.
Korn was one of the first to really bring out a message like these that gave a lot of abused people an outlet. From the first when I found Korn I fell in love. They left an impact with me that I'll never forget.

KoRn is in the box initially. My take was always that she - like so many of us at that time - was finding her escape from the misery of her life in their music. Then they came out of the box as she went out the window to join the neighborhood kids. She found her support network like the fans of this kind of music have always found support within the group. Despite some of the stereotypes, the crowds at metal and numetal shows are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. The artists generally won't tolerate any less. David Draiman of Disturbed halted a concert mid-song once because a little girl in the audience got scared by the pyrotechnics
Korn did a phenomenal version of Another Brick in the Wall too.
This song reminds me a lot of the movie Sucker Punch. It is a beautiful and emotional action movie. But the song aligns so much with the story and vibe of the movie.
Yeah agreed. This is my favourite Korn song. Very heavy, in both the music, the lyrics, and the feeling. But he wrote what he knew. This was something that a lot of people grew up experiencing and music like this helped as an outlet.

Man getting an album from korn, limp bizkit, or blink when you were 10 years old was hard. Parents full disapproval but still allowed it. Defiantly got a sandal to the butt l, and I sure was outta turn. But thank god, and praise to you that had to endure this.
I had good parents, I wasn't abused or anything, but still Korn spoke to me, tapped in the inner rage inside me, it was an outlet for me.
Fun fact but Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit directed the music video ! That and many other videos (including his own LP videos). He's good friend with JD and they toured together at the time. He's truly underrated

The lead singer, Jonathon Davis, went through a lot growing up and much of the music is reflective of that. Be cautious of Daddy, its dark and triggering to many people. Its great for awareness but a rough listen.

As I understand Jonathan Davis’s story he went through a lot of abuse as a kid, and it pours out into his music in so many ways.
This music (not specifically Korn but in general) helped me through so much physical and psychological abuse that I took growing up. I truly believe without the music of my youth, I wouldn't be here today. Angry music makes me happy now.

I suffered sexual abuse from my father since I have memory. I remember myself when i was a teenager having that type of feelings, shouting inside myself, trying to not suffering any more, fighting with my own trying to keep going. Know I’m a 30 old woman accepting that this type of music keeps helping me to go on. Only people how suffer abuse can understand what I’m saying
