Their PR Spokesman accidentally admitted that they don't open the consoles and clean them unless there is a problem with them.
RT should cover this definitely
Haven't seen that video yet. But if that's the case. They shouldn't repeatedly make videos saying otherwise. Stating that they clean test and refurbish all of their items. ((Refurbished)) to me and most people would mean a complete cleaning/Repair on the inside also , Even if it is functional. Like selling a 57' corvette at a sky high premium. Saying fully restored. Yet you didn't do any restoration under the hood.
Wait, he said what? Dear lord, he gave away the game without even attempting to fix it.
He said that in this video. The only reason they opened it was because of the disc read error
Yep I noticed that

Thank you for helping to bring these crooks to light. I hadn't heard of them until your videos, and while I still have all of my original consoles all the way back to the NES because I'm an internet old fart (38), my younger sister (26) doesn't. She has an enormous interest in and appreciation for retro gaming since she grew up playing my consoles while I was away at college, so I've been slowly contributing to her collection by giving her these cleaned up old consoles as Christmas gifts.
The 2600 I gave her several years ago was fully restored by an electrical engineer on eBay who did it as a hobby so the insides were fully cleaned and resoldered, etc., and it was a fantastic restore. I modded an NES for her myself to bypass the region lock chip, but I've been in the market for an SNES for her next. While I obviously can't say for sure, I might have fallen for DKO's bullshit otherwise. I'm an illustrator for a living so even in my free time, I draw pictures - I don't tinker with electronics.🤷♀️
"We get tons of new collections everyday, for a great price, with the console, at least 2 original controllers, accesories and a lot of games. We're not going to give you any of that, because we're going to sell all of them separatedly for a premium price. But don't worry, we're going to include a third party controller that no one wants and third party power supply and cables that are very bad... but let me tell about the keychain, brother! My mother is very proud."

The magic eraser bit kills me! I've refurbished and cleaned a crap ton of consoles over the past 10 years. I can tell you that the magic eraser is one of the last option I go for to remove any kind of dirt. It 100% leave micro scratches and messes up the colours.
I was thinking the same thing magic eraser is literally super fine sand paper.
This makes me really sad. I haven’t purchased from DK Oldies in forever, but I bought an NES from them about a decade ago online. Works great. But the coolest thing was that their warehouse (their only one at the time??) was like 25 minutes from where I grew up. So my friends and I would go there in high school and walk around the warehouse. They’d let you do that if you were local, and the dudes in there were genuinely nice human beings. Every time we were in there the employees were tinkering with old consoles and stuff, so I always got the impression they actually refurbished their stuff. It wasn’t like they were putting on a show or faking it whenever a customer strolled in - it wasn’t even an official store, after all. It was just a warehouse that locals could knock on the door and ask to come in & browse. So it was definitely genuine. But this was years and years ago. So maybe things change, but this was my experience with them personally.
I know it’s hard to take a stranger’s word for it on the internet, but as some sort of proof of this story I can provide details of what the place was like. For example, at the time the warehouse was near Morgantown, Pennsylvania. I am telling the truth, here. That’s all the detail I feel like sharing openly on the internet. Lol
Companies always get worse and start cutting corners when they get bigger. 99% of those workers are probably not there anymore. If they were smart they would own up to their bullshit and get back to their old ways.
@@zackhopkins5185 yeah, that tracks. Hopefully the criticism gets them back on that path to doing things properly. Because I feel like the reason they’re so big now is because they used to do a genuinely good job and probably established a decent reputation in the beginning. Sucks if they’re just cutting corners that badly now. Also, I should add: I can’t believe they’re so popular now. They’ve really blown up.
Ofc there are nice people there. The workers are doing what they are told - and are just like me and you.
It’s the leadership maximising profits at the expense of the consumer which is the problem. The predatory business model isn’t absolved because they have some cool staff.
@@KazeHorse y r u a communist

A magic eraser is literally a fine grit sandpaper sponge. That's why it takes dirt off anything. You can tell when a eraser is used. It scuffs it up.
While I agree with what rich is saying, to be fair he didnt expose anything. He just jumped on the bandwagon after other youtubers were doing it.. dont know why im even saying this.. basically what all his videos are lol
@Jacob S it's not a "bandwagon" when you expose bs
Was Martin Luther king Jr and all his supporters bandwagoners? Cmon now
@TransCube You have it reversed, lol. Higher grit (more sand particles per square inch) is finer and polishes better. The lower the number the rougher it is.
I've seen Magic Erasers be described as 800-5000 grit depending on how hard you press. Since it's a sponge, you do have *some* variability, but even so, it's still sanding the surface. It's a sponge made out of ultra hard melamine (commercial grade countertop surface or cooking utensil material) but in sponge form. lol.
I just saw someone demonstrate this on a old xbox
Goo gone is the best thing to use it’s safe for many objects and works really well

Their "response" video is gaslighting. Which means, not only is it obvious they are scammers. They KNOW they are scammers, and they are doing it intentionally. What they are actually doing, is buying the cheapest (possibly broken) stuff from Ebay, putting a sticker on it, and acting like it's "refurbished". I hope someone gets the FTC on them.
My guess is when you pay for a "refurbished" console they just plug it in to see if it works but if you don't they just send it in whatever condition it's in

Let’s rephrase the above comment they should be banned off all existing platforms and not allowed to sell their overpriced garbage
The "magic eraser" is actually formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer. Its a highly abrasive substance so much so that any extended use on skin causes rashes and burns. So now imagine what that does to the finish on the console.
Edit: this is also before they add another chemical substance to the "eraser" possibly changing the chemical reaction to be even more abrasive.
Edit2: I'm not a chemist or even a console repairman. But I do know how to use Google. So what does that say about DK oldies.
Great video on this matter, keep the content coming. Info like this helps gamers and collector's to be more aware of sellers with bad habits and cheating customers with insane prices.
You missed when they shipped out two completely broken N64s to different CZcamsrs within the last week and a half lol
OMG no way
I love how they were like “oh it’s not broken so we’d just send it straight to cleaning!” Ahhh what?!! You need to change that thermal paste and dust the inside like crazy! Not just get a damp cloth and clean it! That’s not refurbished!
I'm so glad they're finally being exposed and people are starting to catch on. Also they make a video saying if it's not reading disk they open it up to replace the laser and why they are there with an open console they also blow the dust off. Somewhere they have this in writing incase there was some class action law suit they have in detail that they test every console and unless it's not working properly/reading disk they don't open them. Therefore they don't have to open every console and clean. These companies are sneaky especially in the fine print.

It's weird how they replaced the entire laser assembly. Most of the time you just need a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol.
Pretty sure that was the whole point- they wanted to make it look like they go the extra mile.
probably to justify paying the "Premium""
that is true but if cleaning then going trhough the motion of reassembling doesnt fix it you just wasted more man hours where it could of been fixed if just replaced the laser assembly
@@franciscoponce7981 Still means salvageable parts that they can use with generic replacement parts. personally I think it would be more economical to say, take the lense out of a disk drive with broken plastic Disc ejection guides and put it into a drive with ejection guides that aren't broken. Would be more work yes but Cheaper than buying a whole new assembly just to blanket repair everything, creating E-waste of a drive that could work with some TLC. @@franciscoponce7981 Testing it via cleaning takes seconds or minutes. It's worth it to avoid the man hours of replacing it.
You can use a magic eraser. I use them quite frequently to refurbish N64 carts, and clean up consoles, etc... The key to them is not using too much pressure, and not staying in one spot for too long. I live near DKOs shop. Years ago I had purchased refurbished NES, SNES and N64 bundles. One of the bundles had issues and, since I was close, I drove to their shop. They assured me they cleaned/tested/repaired the units but, wouldn't you know, my console and games all failed when they tested them in front of me. They did give me another system and games, but it definitely raised questions about their truthfulness.
I sold them my game collection and shipped it off with the expectation that it would be evaluated in 2/3 days. It took almost a month of follow-up emails before they finally confirmed my quote and sent me a check. It wasn’t bad considering I hadn’t played some of those games in close to 10 years and offloading was easier than selling them myself. About magic eraser and it not damaging the finish, not only is it not true it's also completely unnecessary because that grime would come away in a minute with isopropyl alcohol mixed with pure ethanol. That does take maybe a minute more though which is, I guess, why DKoldies opts for a definitely destructive method that is maybe slightly quicker/cheaper.
Back before the ps3 came out, my ps2 needed a lens replacement and Sony charged the price of the console to ship it in and get it replaced.
I cannot wait for a hot piece of man to review some more DKShiddies!
Nice job Joey! Good thing you placed the GameCube supported Wii with the non-GameCube supported Wii's in the box. Nice quality control there!
I mean this is the company that destroyed a rare GBA SP because they thought it was fake. Can't really expect them to know what they are doing.
This seemed to be in response to a video Retro Gaming Guy. After he pointed out that using a magic eraser on a wii is bad for the finish, the took the video down and reuploaded the version we're seeing now talking about how they don't mess up the finish the finish because they're professionals.
We need some dk oldies on the sound board
The nicest of people I've known have been fake. Joey knows zero embarrassment.
I knew they did not care about console condition before this whole fiasco. The first short of theirs I saw, I noticed they kept everything loose in cardboard bins! Letting Gameboy Micros just rattling around in there!
There’s companies in the uk that have similar practices. Purchased a ps4 pro (refurbished) and opened it up only to find it full of dust and a few cockroaches. It was a good deal at the time so I gave it tlc. Had the same with private sales of consoles it’s a real shame people don’t look after things
Im pretty sure this guy is their only customer.
Love this DK series, getting spicy!
8641 Micro mininature repair tech I noticed a few thing about their repair process that was a pretty big red flag for me personally.
1. The tech fixing the Wii was barely ESD safe for himself or the console. I see an ESD wrist strap but I can't see the grounding cable. (Might be under his arm but still I hope he is grounded.)
2. I see no ESD mat on this bench. If he is going to be moving this Wii around then having a ESD mat is vital to not build up static that may damage certain components. (He will be moving it around to clean the Wii or if they do)
3.Rubbing alcohol is not a great idea for cleaning electrontics. Most rubbing alcohol is 70% achocol and 30% water. What they should be using is isopropyl alcohol which is basically 100% alcohol. Iso (Isopropyl alcohol) is great for cleaning electronics as it dries up fairly in the air or a gentle breeze and if a small bit is still on there it will dry up in a matter of seconds before any testing or powering up of equipment. If you don't make sure that rubbing alcohol is completely dried up then it may short the console since its in small area it won't dry up as easily. Even with the blower if you don't blow it in a certain area for a bit you can still have traces of it shorting stuff when you go to test it.
4. The toothbrush looks very dirty and might have some dirt, flux, or whatever still in it. They should be using an acid brush. (used in many things like soldering) But they are cheap so if it gets damaged or dirty you can throw it away and get one 36 pack super cheap at any hardware store. Toothbrushes are not great since their bristles are different from brush to brush, (when it comes to shapes and sizes) and frankly cost a pretty penny if you are going to go through a lot of them, Also the bristles come in certain "Hardness" so for consist cleaning you must be using the same type for quality control. Acid brush bristles are made from stiff horsehair and are pretty much the same from brand to brand great for cleaning in small areas, cracks, and holes.
5. Be very careful when using something like q-tips on electronics. The ones they are using look like cotton q-tips which can leave a mess if rubbed hard or catching on something inside the ports. Q-tips can leave small bit of debris even when wetted so it might block or short something if not removed. Its not completely wrong to use q-tips but you need to inspect after your are done cleaning to make sure nothing was left behind from the q-tip. There are polyurethane foam swabs you can use but its not needed. A solid inspection for debris under some magnification works best.
6. After you clean something its best to test it again. During the cleaning process there is a chance you may any fluids that got into the console or equipment. Testing should be the final thing before you finish "fixing something." If you go back to cleaning something you missed you should test it again so you know that something else didn't arise when cleaning.
Just seeing small bits of this video makes me mad and shocked on quality control they show everyone.
Yeah it reminds me of the local game store when I used to live in Cali. They promised the can fix the Ring of Death Problem with the 360 and all they did was Heat Treat your system something you can do at home by wrapping it in a towel while it's turned on. Needless to say before I moved they already went out of business for ripping others off.
I saw this video and I was shocked of how arrogant DK oldies really truly are
