- Rosalynn Carter was memorialized Tuesday as a matriarch who felt most comfortable among the impoverished and vulnerable as she was mourned by a rare gathering of all living U.S. first ladies and multiple presidents, including her 99-year-old husband Jimmy Carter in the front row.
The tribute service marked the second day of a three-day schedule of public events celebrating the former first lady and global humanitarian who died Nov. 19 at home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 96. Tributes began Monday in the Carters’ native Sumter County and continued at Glenn Memorial Church in Atlanta.
“My mother was the glue that held our family together through the ups and downs and thicks and thins of our family’s politics," her son James Earl “Chip” Carter III said.
The former president, who is 10 months into home hospice care and hadn't been seen in public since September, watched from his wheelchair, reclining and covered by a blanket featuring his wife's face, with Chip and his daughter Amy holding his hands. Their other sons, Jeff and Jack, flanked them.
“He never wants to be very far from her,” Carter Center CEO Paige Alexander said
President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, their longtime friends, joined them in the front row, along with former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former first ladies Melania Trump, Michelle Obama and Laura Bush. Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff paid their respects, as did Georgia's U.S. senators and Gov. Brian Kemp and his wife Marty. More than 1,000 people, including a sizeable contingent of Secret Service agents, filled the sanctuary. Former Presidents Donald Trump, Barack Obama and George W. Bush were invited but will not attend.
The service reflected Rosalynn Carter’s status as a global figure while emphasizing her more private profile as a family matriarch who preferred a simple life and held a deep religious faith.
“She had met kings and queens, presidents, others in authority, powerful corporate leaders and celebrities,” Chip Carter said. “She said the people that she felt the most comfortable with and the people she enjoyed being with the most were those that lived in absolute abject poverty.”
The pews filled with political power players, but front and center were her children and dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren - all surrounding Jimmy Carter, who grieved not as a former president, but as her partner of 77 years.
The speakers came from many chapters of her long life: Chip as the son who recalled his once-shy mother coming into her own in business and politics; Kathryn Cade as the White House aide who stayed on as a close adviser as Rosalynn Carter helped build The Carter Center and its global reach; Judy Woodruff as a journalist who covered the Carter presidency; and Amy Carter, who read a love note her father wrote to her mother 75 years before.
"Their partnership and love story was a defining feature of her life,” Amy Carter said.
Cade described Rosalynn Carter's time as first lady as “really just one chapter in a life that was about caring for others.”
Woodruff recalled Rosalynn Carter lobbying lawmakers, campaigning separately from her husband, attending Cabinet meetings and playing key roles - including being the first presidential adviser to suggest Camp David as a negotiating place for Epypt’s Anwar Sadat and Israel’s Menachem Begin. The decision led to historic peace accords between the two countries.
“Without Rosalynn Carter, I don’t believe there would have been a President Carter,” Woodruff said.

I am a Conservative Republican and didn't agree with President Carter's politics.
But that's OK. He and Rosalynn were a fine moral couple, and their hearts were always in the right place.
President Carter is the first president I remember, and Rosalynn was the first lady that I first recalled.
President Carter and Rosalynn have such a record of achievement post Presidency ( Habbiat for humanity) that it will never be surpassed.
The great achievements with hostages in North Korea, and and as an election monitor worldwide.
The Carter's are the last of the old era in politics, and whether you agree with their politics or not, with them will go the final part of the old America.
A person isn't only their politics.
Good job Trisha. R I p to John Lennon.
The piano as she and casket entered the chapel was beautiful. Such a gentle lady she was...
Imagine being at a memorial service, and the first thing you sing is "Imagine there's no heaven."
Followed by, "and no religion too."
I use to think the same. Until I listened to all the words and understood the meaning.
hahaha
Exactly my first thought seeing this. What a horrendous song choice.
Because there is No Heaven , Nirvana or Elysium either...
Yes, yes, yes!!!! WE ARE ALL ONE! I DID IMAGIN...l saw it in a dream in the 90's. Oh well.
Not much has Changed with Humanbeings...sadly! Best lyrics EVER. REST IN love Ms. Carter...you were kind.
Thank you for delivering this awesome song...much respect to an awesome couple...they served our country with no fanfare...God bless..
Beautiful song , wonderfully sung by two of Best for a woman never to be forgotten...
That is what I always wanted sang at my funeral.. always
Beautiful, Garth and Trisha ❤ The Carters have been strong role models for the world
Make a heaven here on earth is the message of the song. This message will get louder yet.
It's the Atheist Manifesto...and a ungodly song...I can't believe the said imagine theres no heaven...at a memorial.
Beautiful song and very apropos 🙏✨🙏
Yes… “Imagine”😢
Who doesn't want harmony and peace in this diverse USA. If only dreams could be fulfilled as we want them.
What a beautiful, tribute to Rosalynn Carter, Something Trump will never have.
For all of you who made comments about the song being inappropriate- when your loved one passes, you will get to choose which song(s) are sung at their funeral service/celebration of life. It's none of our business which song or songs that the Carters selected for this service.
As someone who's had many loved ones die, I can tell you that the next of kin makes all the decisions about memorial services. This includes everything from choosing traditional burial or cremation to time and place where the service will be. Of course, availability of the requested venue, date, and time has to be worked out. Also, the availability of the pastor(s) or speaker(s) and musicians are considered.
Some people preplan their own service, including song selections.
I apologize for the length of my comments. I just want to make clear that the song was decided on by Mrs. Carter and/or her family. I think Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks did a great job.
This was such a beautiful rendition of this song. I am sure Mrs. Carter would have loved this. RIP beautiful lady
...Fly high. 💗
We seriously doubt it.

You think they were sitting around singing Imagine to each other? :) @@T6706K
My favorite song..great tribute to a wonderful soman
Why would you want to imagine there's no heaven at a memorial service?!!
Most people listen to the entire song, dude. The message of the song is clear. Stop clinging, expand your imagination to include all people and live in tbe here and now. That is all we know and it is enough. Jesus in his actions was a perfect example of that. His words were composed by other people and long after he was dead.
@@judysoutherland9672 I've listened to the song many, many times. I owned the song. I used to love it. Then I started thinking about what the lyrics actually mean and what living them out would be like. Owning NOTHING, not having anything to kill or die for means not caring about anything, no heaven above us means no hope of an after-life. It's a recipe for misery, not happiness. The gospels were written by people who knew Jesus a few decades after His death and resurrection, Jesus certainly never imagined there was no heaven. I'm sure when Lennon was shot, in the moments before his death, he hoped that there is a heaven.
Dude, the song is a work of art. It has a poetic meaning gleaned through the combination of melody and lyrics. It is not a recipe. There is no evidence of a heaven so why bother to worry about it? All of life is a process, Death is part of the process. Meanwhile our job is to grow up and treat people the way you would want to be treated. Ownership of anything is inherently temporary. Since you let fear lead, do what you have to do, but do not try and speak for either Jesus or John Lennon. Maturity means knowing when to stay in your lane. The writers of the 4 gospels never met Jesus nor did they witness any of his ministry, nor do they tell us their names. Matthew copies most of Mark's Gospel much of it word for word. Certainly there are radical messages of love and self sacrifice in the new testament. Were the writers paid scribes, paid to write what was necessary for the survival of the tribe and for the survival of those in power similar to the scribes of the old testament? (ask any jew in Israel, they know their history) In the end the example of Jesus in action is my favorite thing in the Christian bible. He appears not to have owned much, he appears to genuinely like all kinds of people, he knew how to have a good time, he clearly says welcome the stranger and turn the other cheek. Take it or leave it.
Lame Song Lame Singers Biden Bros👹👹
John professed unbelief in God and the song reflects it. Listen to the words. Unbelievable that this song was selected.
so beautiful makes me feel sad 😭
Wonderful song ! 🌹❤️
It was beautiful 💕
This is the perfect song, I know Rosalynn always wanted peace and harmony in the world.
I'm sure John Lennon is looking down and smiling
I think you mean looking UP and CRYING.
I read that Rosalynn chose the music for her service. Wondering if she meant to choose "I Can Only Imagine"
Rosalynn Carter embraced ALL people. Imagine by John Lennon embraces ALL people. Not surprising Imagine was a song the Carter's chose.
Imagine hearing, "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
Aw, and I bet you claim to be a Christian, in spite of that hate-filled comment. The Carters literally lived their lives as Jesus taught us-caring for the least of these! I'm sure Heaven rejoiced when she arrived, and welcomed her home!
When did you build homes for the poor or give your life to trying to make life better for people in this country and beyond? You're the reason why people are leaving the church and unfortunately God! Great going you p.o.s!

It was probably suppose to be "I Can Only Imagine". - that would be more appropriate.
That was beautiful. Thank you Trisha and Garth.
FOR ARRIVING AT THIS WONDERFUL LADYS FUNERAL, GO & BREAK UP ANOTHER HOME!!
A loving tribute.
Merry Christmas Y’all 🎄🎄🎄☮️💜🎶🎄🎄🎄
Just absolutely beautiful !
I've always loved this song, and the image it puts forward. Although, I know some deeply religious folks take issue with it, because it proposes no religion, or heaven or Hell. Personally, I just love the vision of Peace and unity it puts forth. I assume the family asked for this song, and that just makes me admire the Carters, even more!! May she Rest In Peace! What an exceptional human being she was!!
The Carter s are Born Again Christians .They don't need this song at her memorial. Bad choice. .Yes ,there is a Heaven and she went there
They selected the music stupid

A Very appropriate Song.
I don't have to imagine there is no country. It's true.

Devout christian you say?
We are up to our neck with people are blowing their Christian horn...The Carter's walked it. The family picked the music..
@user-hn7og6tt6l my brain knew how to spell it but my fingers did not 🤣
This was not a funeral. It was a memorial service. The Carters loved the song, it reflects their values and their lives of service to millions of people over a very long time. They clearly took to the example of Jesus, not the scolding Pharisees.
Steely Dan comes to mind!
This is akin to performing "Knocking on Heaven's Door" at a nursing home.

Must have been a favorite song of Rosalynn Carters. Speaks to her love and inclusivness for ALL people. Make a heaven here on earth is the message of the song.
Clearly that’s not the message people receive now is it.
I can't speak for others but I love the message of this beautiful song. @@trustoldpaths1415
Clearly that IS the message most people receive now, more than ever. Takes a lot more guts, love and vision to live as if heaven were/should be HERE, not in some pie in the sky idea you hope might be real someday maybe. Jews don't believe in heaven and they are very smart people who have a history book to refer to where as Christians had to cop someone else's history to build a story on. @@trustoldpaths1415

Not a Christian song. I doubt she would have chosen it. From the headline, I thought they meant the song, “I Can Only Imagine,” which would have aligned with their beliefs.
Sorry but you can't speak for all Christians. Millions of Christians love this song. It is an iconic anthem embracing all people in the best way which is exactly how the Carter's lived their incredible lives. It is your impulse to exclude that gives Christianity a bad name.
@@judysoutherland9672 You are mistaken as to my intent. It doesn’t matter how many like the song. The song is secularist. It states that the things of God are to be overcome, not embraced. I’m not in favor of leaving anyone out. All are welcome.
So sorry you need those kinds of categories. And yes it does matter how many are touched by a song or any work of art. Art transcends divisions and unites humans often saving lives, often changing lives. Wish the same could be said about religion, although in the hands of people like the Carters religion finds it's rightful place and can operate like art does. Openness, service, inclusiveness, courage and generosity. @@mamakk1464
