Fuel Shutoff Solenoid (FSS) delete - First Gen Dodge Cummins

  • In this video we show you how to delete the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid on your first gen dodge cummins. This solenoid shuts the truck off when you turn the key off. This solenoid when it malfunctions may cause the truck to not shut off when the key is turned off, or in the second case I had, the truck could only get up to a certain speed or rpm and would cut off fuel (my guess is the plunger malfunctioning). This is the solution to these problems...delete it! Use a pull cable to shut the truck off manually instead and avoid these issues. Amazon purchase links below.

    I am slowly doing all of these upgrades to my trucks in my free time. This one is next, I have a slight fuel leak at the shut off solenoid on one of my trucks when it's cold. I have all of your 1st gen videos saved to a folder on my PC...thanks a lot for taking the time to make them. Once you do some upgrades, the 1st gen cummins Dodges are one of the most reliable trucks ever built.

    Hi Tyler, I hooked up the wires back up to the FSS, as Tim from Decent Garage, told me to do and the truck runs great again. Even though you do the delete, you still have to reinstall the FSS wiring or the truck will idle poorly and belch black smoke, as there is no timing advance on start up, as the PCM controls this. Thank you for your help, as well!!

    How did you go about bending that bracket over; a torch? My truck died on me on the way home and won't start now so I'm hoping its the FSS like yours and not the fuel pump in the tank. Did you have to prime the system before starting it back up? Thanks!

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  Před 7 lety

      Cody No prime was required. Some guys cut that bracket off so they can get to the FSS easier. When mine went I wasn't near the shop so I just took a pair of vise grips and bent it back so I could get at the solenoid with a wrench.

    • @MetalManiac95
      @MetalManiac95 Před 7 lety +2

      When the shutoff was acting up on you, would it randomly cut out? Mine is doing like what you said and it would cut out at a certain rpm (but would come back in a couple seconds). On the way home today it cut out, but kept doing it to the point to where it killed the engine.

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  Před 7 lety

      Cody That's exactly what happened to me on a 12 hour road trip. Unfortunately I didn't solve the problem until after the road trip so I ended up only going like 90kmh the whole trip. That's the problem though, definitely the FSS. Gut it and install a pull cable! That's the way to go. I've had it like this since and haven't had any issues since. Yeah an extra step in shutting off the truck but avoids the hassle of the FSS acting up... which seems to be always.

    Great Video Tyler, my FSS just went out after four months on a Brand New 230 Hp VE Injection pump. I had a manual shut down put in. The issue I am having is once the bypass is put in and the wiring to the Soleniod is disconnected. It affects the KSB on
    Cold Start conditions. Did you rewire the KSB? Thank you!!

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  Před 2 lety +2

      That's a good point Frank..and one that I did not cover in the video when I made it at the time because I was such a newbie. The wiring diagrams if you take a look at them feed through the FSS to the KSB if I'm not mistaken so the wiring should remain connected to the FSS if you still want your KSB to function properly.

      Sounds to me like an FSS issue. Did just the tip break off or are you saying the whole plunger is gone? Maybe your fuel filter is clogged. To me sputtering and losing power is a fuel pressure issue. Do you have a fuel gauge on your truck?

  • @j0hncast33l
    @j0hncast33l Před 8 lety +4

    Your plunger looked completely fine...chances are it was just a loose connection to the FSS. It's very common to have a loose connection, and with the increase of RPM (causing vibration) on these engines it had poor connection. It would have been much cheaper, and easier to just address the loose connection first and go from there.
    Sure, many guys think it's cool to have the kill cable, but those grow old fast. Also, once you start increasing the fuel on these trucks but keep the stock injectors it will put more stress on the the plunger. The best remedy is a driver mod. Basically don't mash the pedal down, and then pull up too quickly.

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  Před 8 lety +4

      It may have been a loose connection, but after having issues with it twice now I'm trying out a different route not because I think it's "cool" but because it solves the issue in a different way. I don't have to worry about it failing on me again in the middle of a road trip. As for a cost comparison, buying a new FSS would have been just about the same as buying a kill cable and installing it. This is just another way to solve some issues! Thanks for the tips though.

      You can buy quality FSS replacements from Geno's for just under $20.
