    Corey for the first time in all my 74 years, I have a dream garden on my terrace. I live in Cuenca, Ecuador, which has the perfect climate for growing nearly everything. Thanks to the great environment here and your tutelage, my containers and hanging baskets are nothing short of amazing!!! Thank you for all the great instructions.

    I snagged some clearance drop in planters from Lowe’s at 50% off. Some were good enough to just drop in, but the ones that weren’t , I did exactly this. I popped it out and divided them and mixed them in my own recipes. The roots were not that deep and they are now thriving . I have learned a lot from your videos, I am trying to be better at container gardening. With your tips I hope this year I will do better. I’m happy i found your channel.

    21:12 this was very informative and easy to comprehend. Thank you. I’ve always liked to pot up small starter plants in my 10-12 inch baskets and watch them grow. Because the gorgeous oversized hanging baskets available are expensive and I’ve never had much success growing them on. You explained why they are so difficult to keep alive, when over-planted, and I wasn’t able to water them 2-3 times a day.

    Wow! Great info. Now I know why my purchased hanging baskets didn't last into July. It makes total sense after you explained it. How many zonal geraniums should you have in a 12" hanging basket? Most ready made baskets that I have seen in my area usually have 3 geraniums and a couple of other filler plants. Just came across your channel recently. Really enjoy your videos.

    Thank you so much for your videos - I’ve been learning so much! I would be concerned about putting those two plants in the 14 inch container because outdoors we can’t control how much rain our pots get. And the lack of roots on those two plants along with soggy soil seems like a recipe for disaster.

      @UpNorthGardenMI  Před měsícem +1

      When I’m putting pots outside, I try to keep an eye on the weather for the first two weeks. After that they seem to manage to recover pretty quickly from most of what Mother Nature throws at them.

    Corey i have learned a great deal on how to manage my small greenhouse from you. What no talks about is pest management in greenhouses. You can not have a greenhouse and not have pests. I would LOVE a video on that. Or some direction. How do u manage???

    • @UpNorthGardenMI
      @UpNorthGardenMI  Před měsícem

      We’re trying to change over to beneficial insects, but I’ve got to get my head around it before I jump into that conversation publicly.
      Otherwise we try to use minimal pesticides. Neem Oil and Marathon and BioAdvanced 3-in-1 have been what we use when absolutely necessary.
      One of the advantages of being farther north is that the nastiest bugs tend to hit places farther south first (and some don’t get to us at all… yet), so when we’re lucky we have a bit of warning and can focus on preventative control.

    • @UpNorthGardenMI
      @UpNorthGardenMI  Před měsícem

      That’s a bummer. I understand what they mean… since we planted ours March 1st, we’ve trimmed them twice and have to keep them spaced… so that adds labor and uses more bench space- we think it’s worth it, but I understand why one might have to weigh their options.

    • @UpNorthGardenMI
      @UpNorthGardenMI  Před měsícem

      I usually start right when I get home. If you’re getting them from a nursery, you can ask. If they’re from a box store, they probably haven’t gotten food since they left the grower.

    Watching this before bed but now I'm curious... will check tomorrow how many calibrachoas are in each hanging basket I purchased from the big box store. Each basket has medium pink, dark pink, and purple. When I purchased them two weeks ago, all three colors were equally distributed. But now, the purple has almost completely taken over.

    • @UpNorthGardenMI
      @UpNorthGardenMI  Před měsícem +1

      Sometimes one color will have a growth spurt or blooming spurt - usually the others catch up, but on occasion there’s a plant that gets sluggish. It can be interesting to see how they change over the season.

      @dlight9849 Před měsícem

      @@UpNorthGardenMI I checked my hanging baskets and am happy to report 3 calibrachoa per 10" basket..... and they weren't crammed in the center, nor were they pushed to the far edge. 😄 Thank you for the advice.

    Corey: Plastic Hanging Baskets vs Metal Hanging Baskets with Coconut Fiber Liner - is one better than the other for personal home use?

    • @UpNorthGardenMI
      @UpNorthGardenMI  Před měsícem +1

      Either works. Sometimes the fiber pots can dry out faster. I prefer plastic for upright plants because I don’t always like seeing the fiber pot (good trailing plants will hide the pot).

  • @JasmineGP
    @JasmineGP Před měsícem

    Corey also can I fertilize the petunias or other flowers with the stick fertilizer?

    • @UpNorthGardenMI
      @UpNorthGardenMI  Před měsícem

      Not sure what "stick fertilizer" is. Are they plant spikes? I haven't used them - I'd guess they would be like using a granular, time-release -- if so, I'd still water with a water-soluble at least every other week (or wait and use water-soluble as needed).

  • @Jordan-dg8tp
    @Jordan-dg8tp Před měsícem

    I was actually googling if I could divide annuals in pots!
    I am getting two Proven Winners Superbell calibrachoa and Snowstorm suteras for two 12in pots. Do you think I'd be able to take the quart sized flowers, cut them in half, and plant them alternating colors to better split the colors? Or do I even need to do that and they naturally will mix together throughout the pot if I plant them closely in the center of the pot?
    Hopefully 2 plants in a 12in isn't too many!

    • @UpNorthGardenMI
      @UpNorthGardenMI  Před měsícem

      You won’t be able to divide individual plants… just a combination containers that is made up of several plants… so DO NOT try cutting either of the plants in the 4" size you mentioned in half - those kinds aren’t propagated that way.
      One Superbells and one Sutera will take a long time to fill a 12”. They’re not as vigorous as a Supertunia Vista or Superbena. I’d go with two of each in a 12”.
