Ideally casting into the fast water to let it drift down like real food?
Yes. But don’t hesitate to throw it on the slow side too. Fish will strike just about anywhere on that seam line.

So you would want to cast on and try to keep the fly on the fast side of the seam then correct?
To be honest, it’s usually best to work both sides of the seam. You never know exactly where the fish are hanging out (unless you can see them). 😎👍🏽
So what kind of flies would you use if you came up onto a different river that you've never fished before in different states.
Another thing to consider is watching the insects in the area where you are thus giving you an idea of what they might be looking for.
