  • If you're one of the rare souls who decides to take a trip to Guyana, the least visited country in the Americas, chances are your first stop will be Georgetown, the capital city. With a population of only around 200,000, it looks and feels almost like a small town. But this city is no joke. With the newfound oil wealth driving prices up, crime is starting to skyrocket. Although everyone in Guyana suffers from theft, American oil workers and Chinese merchants in particular are hunted in the streets by muggers. I was no oil worker, but I was assumed to be one.

If you were of a slightly older generation, or had attended the previous school system in Kenya, then you would know that the first black judge of the High Court of Kenya, Cecil Henry Ethelwood Miller, who arrived in Kenya in 1964, was also from Georgetown, British Guyana. He also served as Chief Justice during very politically-charged years in Kenya (the country was virtually a police state then) that the younger generation has absolutely no knowledge or understanding of.

I'm originally from Guyana, came to the USA in 1977. Guyana is a small English speaking country in the Northern tip of South America. We have less than 1 million people living in a country larger than Idaho or the UK. We are however; culturally Caribbean. The Guyanese's political history is not as straight forward as some might want you to believe. President Forbes Burnham and Cheddi Jagan used to be friends. Guyana educated some bright and brilliant people, scattered all over the World today. The older generations are more educated than the youths of today. Burnham had restrictions on speech and imports. He thought that making us self reliant was better than depending on the West. Burnham died in 1985. The economic situation in Guyana today can't be blamed only on him. Most Guyanese are friendly, hard working, and peaceful people. Over the years, I've taken my husband, kids, and grands to visit. Thanks for educating the World on some of our history. Stay safe. đŸ‡ŹđŸ‡Ÿ

@@JC-wi2jz Not like the America. Why there are more Indians in certain areas is because after slavery most of them worked on the plantations and farms and stayed there but it is not the type of segregation like the States. Black people tend to live in the cities because they were not into heavy farming. The threw their hoes down that is why they had to bring in the Indians, Portuguese and Chinese to work as indentured labourers after slavery. You can buy a house and live anywhere in Guyana. A lot of the Ameridians live on their original land in the interior and has been discriminated against. There are more Indians because a great percentage of the other races left after Burnham destroyed the country. Indians also had extremely large families more than anyone else. But you can choose to live where ever you want.

As a South American myself I always wondered why these countries are simply forgotten and not integrated whatsoever with the rest of the sub-continent. It's not just people people farther North in the continent that don't know of their existence, for us in the South it's as though they are not even there to the point that you won't learn anything about them in your school life.
The fact that Sabbatical probably had to fly all over from Buenos Aires to NY and then back to Georgetown to get there, proves to what extent these countries are just isolated from most of the region.
Thanks for showing this for us so ignorant about how these people live and we can only hope that in the future we can do some work on proper integrating the region.
