The Year Indiana Jones Became “Popular” Again

- There are a lot of marketing campaigns and commercials from my childhood that I still remember to this day, but the one that will always stand out to me is the year that Lucasfilms produced so much content that made kids love Indiana Jones again. Video game and toys and interactive website all came together to brainwash the kids of the 2000’s (me) into believing Indiana Jones was an iconic hero with as much staying power as Star Wars
Special Thanks To @TheDanTheManShow for filling in the gaps of the missing footage. Nobody would’ve known what happened to beloved character “Oxley” had it not been for him.

The switch to Danish 3 hours in was a surprise and so unexplained Great video
lego indiana jones is the single most formative thing of my entire childhood and I never even made it past the first level.
How 💀
@@Curlyheart YOU KNOW TEMPLE OF DOOM BE ON SOME BULLSHIT 😭
lol same
i used to be scared af of the spiders
@@samuraimai4874 I got all 50 achievements though.
I told my boyfriends brother I liked Lego Indiana Jones more than Lego Star Wars as a kid and he said it’s good to know I never had taste
Damn that's a burn to his brother
The first 3 were all god tier- star wars, batman, Indiana Jones
Two days ago I was trying to explain to my gf that Indy was EVERYWHERE when the last movie came out. I was explaining how disappointed I was that it’s not a bigger event. I was really looking forward to it being like that again.
I love it when he assumes that stuff that actually happened in the movie was made up for the game like Satipo (who was actually played by a young Alfred Molina), Jock, and the gong bit in Club Obi-Wan
When I played the original Lego Indian Jones game, for years I was convinced the hub world was the entire game and I was much older when I realised I could actually look at the map and play the real thing.
i barely made progress at any of the lego games when i was like 7 or 8 years old back then, when i was 10 the only lego game i could probably beat was Lego Marvel Superheroes
What I’ve learned from this 4 and a half hour long video is that this man listens to heathers the musical. Specifically JD’s song… this fact makes me oddly happy
I'm not watching all that. The "I was meant to be yours..." song?
Man, I remember going as Indiana Jones for Halloween one year. We went to a Halloween Express and they were selling an Indiana Jones branded whip.
Not the toy used in this video. An actual whip.
How the fuck did nobody get hurt in that era?
Lol same probably the coolest I’ve felt as a kid. I just carried a legit rope as the whip. Nobody minded or got hurt, only my soul growing up ofc
Someone did get hurt, me. My brother had a whip and hurt me with it when we were kids lmao
LEGO Indiana Jones is one if not the best LEGO game due to the level design. It took scenes from the movies and turned them into familiar story beats with unexpected turns with sprawling secrets and puzzles. Super fun!
Seriously. It came out around the same time of games with Star Wars and Batman, yet somehow was better than both of them.
when I was a boy I was obsessed with Satipo. He was my favorite character in any media. I called him Depo
Fun fact. In the movies Satipo was played by Alfred Malina. He’s a small actor who hasn’t done much, except for playing DOC OCK in Spider-Man!
Watching this video is basically a non-negotiable contract to the Oxley fan club, dues are owed by the 1st of the month.
Somehow you’ve managed to point out exactly why Indy 5 has failed without even taking about it
One thing I rlly didnt like ab Dial of Destiny (I loved the movie) was the marketing. It…was so minimalist? If you werent following their socials you would hardly know it was coming out! But in 2008 we had SO MANY toys, games, costumes, books, THE BOOKS were so fun!!!! This time we got like 2 lego sets, a handful of action figure and NO BOOKS?! C’mon Disney
God you really are one of the best CZcamsrs I’ve ever watched. It’s actually mind blowing how quality your content is.
went into this 4 hour journey expecting to learn about Indiana Jones marketing, stayed for the 4 hour lets play of Lego Indiana Jones. brings me back to when I played Lego Star Wars 2 as a kid and was mindblown/intimidated by how expensive the unlockables got. and I never knew about the stud multiplier because my dumbass was too lazy to get the collectables since unless it was by accident I never found them or went out my way to get them.
9:19 I would kill for a 2008 style James Bond lego Game.
This very period of time was my childhood 🥲 Most kids looked up to Spider-Man or Ben 10, but my hero was Indy.
Satipo should make a dramatic post-credits cameo in dial of destiny, honestly.
Dude when crystal skull came out, really little kid me freaking loved indiana jones. Games, costumes, fake whip, the works.
I could never watch the movies, though, because they were "too violent" lol
they just had graphic scenes
Im sorry man. I love Indiana Jones but never bothered to play any of the games. The movies themselves cannot be beat, that 80s violence is what makes my childhood so fond lol. Who doesn’t want to see blood spurting out of a Nazi at the ripe age of 10-13.
@@GuineaPigEveryday I was way too young to first see indiana jones, I was probably younger then that when I was shown it. I enjoyed the games and still do but theres probably some scarring i've developed from graphic scenes in general so who knows
@@crdog4009u cant get scarred from indiana jones bro chill
@@obscure.reference eh my brain says otherwise lol
A fun fact about the first Indiana Jones film, Sapito was actually played by Alfred Molina (who also play Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home.)
Man, Dial of Destiny wishes that it could have the same hype, time period, and environment. That Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had when that movie came out.
Weirdly enough I was thinking the other day why the hell am I such a massive fan of Indiana Jones I’m only 21, then I saw this and realised oh I was a child who loved Lego in 2007/8 that’s why I love Indiana Jones
Those Lucasfilm marketing strategies where crazy! I remember being so hyped for Crystal skull even my dad bought the original trilogy DVD months before the release of the fourth movie. I even remember vividly that the original movies were put on public TV on my country. So many good memories.
"Maybe Satipo will show up in dial of destiny" he doesn't know
It wasn’t expected but I’m glad this retrospective turned into a game commentary because I could watch you play Lego games forever
55:53
Men measure their length, women measure their jump height.
WE MAKIN IT OUT THE TEMPLE WITH THIS ONE 💯💯💯
That Flash game segment got my nostalgia brain lit, That star wars game was my shit I've got more hours logged on it than anything on my Playstation
I also had that whip toy as a kid. For some reason I also got sucked into the Indiana Jones hype.
Credit where it’s due, It did introduce me to the original movies.
You knew something was hot shit at the time when a property got a whole ass weekly magazine for kids. The Indy comic was so cool when I was young
I remember back in either late 2007 to early 2008 there was a lego Indiana jones teaser website that had Indiana standing over a cliff in South America. It featured some sort of riddle/treasure hunt thing and I can’t find it to save my life
The heavy marketing of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the participation 4-year-old me took in it created a bond with a fictional work and character I’ve not once felt since. I spent much of the time leading up to Dial of Destiny worried sick that Indy was gonna die.
my dad introduced me to indy and then i got the lego game they are by far my favorite movies
I think that the casting of Mads Mikkelsen and Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the most recent film also attracted a lot of the girlies to the franchise that would have otherwise not been interested (including myself)
Back in 2007, I loved the Lego Star Wars games. On New Year, I found the Indiana Jones trailer on LSWTCS, and I was curious. I asked my dad to show me the movies so I could play the game and get the plot, and not gonna lie: I fell in love with the franchise. Indiana Jones became my favorite film series of all time, and the good archeologist went on to become my favorite movie hero.
I used to be bullied for being more of a brainy kid rather than a sporty one. I saw in Indy someone who wasn't just a buff dude that used brute force to save the day; he was a smart guy used both brains and brawn, and I loved to see a hero like that. Made me think that being a brainy boy wasn't that bad.
Maybe marketing got to me, but I am glad it did. Hell, I just began to play Fortnite again last year just to get the Indiana Jones skin. I wish he was as popular as he was back in 2008. Indy deserves it.
(Also, spoilers for Dial: I think his plea in the third act of the movie was a reflection of the current state of the franchise, thinking the world didn't have a place for him anymore. Maybe that is why that hit me a bit harder)
4 and a half hours of Lego Indiana Jones isn’t how I thought I’d spend my day, but here we are
Man, you make the most random niche little jokes and references that make your videos ten times more entertaining. I think this is my favorite form of internet content. Keep it up!
My brother had that exact whip toy and we also had the spoons.
I also distinctly remember having an invisible ink pen and notebook from Burger King for the promotion. I also remember that they had a spicy burger or something and those peel off coupons. I ALSO remember that the BK commercial had some guy blow his straw paper like a blow dart and the commercial lead to me and my brother doing that back and forth for years.
It's funny how this video found me as I decided to take literally last weekend to pick up Lego Indiana Jones 2 and complete it entirely. It was the childhood game of my youth as it was the first legitimate christmas present I got for an xbox during hard times. Never played the first game but god it got me hooked on the movies too, I also did a marathon of them at the same time. I share the frustration with the vehicle sections a lot.
People loving the prequels and not kingdom of the crystal skull just proves that it’s not nostalgia blindness, it’s because they’re good movies (except for phantom menace)
I mean I would argue the prequels aren’t good, but they’re fun and have a lot of good idea that people can latch on to. You can sort of squint through the poor execution. While the Crystal Skull was just kinda boring and rote.
@@xxgirl101xx I can kinda agree with u maybe I like the ideas and concepts presented but not always how they were presented in the prequels
Could you PLEASE make a video on the era of poptropica in gaming? That hit so vividly as someone who’s had a remarkably similar computer lab experience as a kid.
your videos give me the vibe of asking mom if you can show her the lego set you've build but instead you force her to watch 3 hours long LEGO game gameplay, and when she asks what about the set, you just show her the tiniest possible LEGO set there is on a planet, containing like 5 LEGO pieces, which you could have just brought to her on one finger
love it tho
I was ahead of the Indiana Jones Renaissance, but only because i discovered Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb for PS2 in 2006. Once i played that i was hooked forever.
2008 and 2009 were amazing for Indiana Jones fans. They brought back Indy to pop culture across videogames, books, comics and movies. There was a very conscious crescendo into the premiere of the 2008 movie.
They weren't able to replicate this in 2023 for the next movie. There was no buzz of particularly interesting merchandise. The movie simply arrived.
It seems to me current Gen kids don't care about Indy at all.
Or kids don't like old men As the star
@@Lumistrocity as someone who likes The Dark Knight Returns - a story where Batman is 55 - since 12 years old, I found that incredibly dumb.
@@thestarkknightreturns I meant actors...
@@Lumistrocity yet Keaton barely looks like a 70 year old playing a 60 year old in The Flash. He's just as badass - if not more - as when he played it 30 years ago.
I love all the Classic and Legend Trilogy-era Tomb Raider references hidden in this video
So glad I found your channel just from a recommendation because I was there during the Indy hype of 2008-2009 it was really something different even if the movie wasn’t the best just something about seeing Indiana Jones on the shelf with action figures and LEGO sets were a major part of my childhood. The video game especially having my grandma buy it for my ps2 at Walmart and playing the hell out of it. Lego Indiana Jones was definitely the most important aspect of that time along with lego Star Wars so it’s great to hear someone share in this as well, btw I also remember the Obi Wan Anakin game where they were action figures fighting there was also another one where you can place figures on the screen and have them fight as well
Also an update I just got to your flash games section for LEGO Indiana Jones and wow I can’t believe it that’s the same flash game I played a bunch too literally just unlocked that memory I completely forgot about that game I remember it was super hard
“I might be afraid of this foreign land, but that doesn’t mean I can’t steal their stuff”
Now THATS a quote
I apologize if you've already gotten comments about this but I wanted to talk about the tangent regarding Luke's Lightsaber in the gamecube cutscene.
It's green not blue.
HOWEVER it is a different shade of green that's more blue, something like teal. It's not the regular shade of blue which is probably why your friends were confused when you called it blue because it's clearly not the same color as the sky.
I think what happened is either the wrong RGB value was used for the lightsaber during the cutscene or the green somehow blended with the blue sky. Either way it was clearly a mistake as the other versions fixed it.
You are wrong for calling it blue but you are not wrong that the color is different from normal. You're now both invalidated & validated. lol
Side note, enjoying the video. I usually wait until finishing a video before commenting but this one is so long and the lightsaber color is a tangent that I knew I'd forget about it if I didn't comment on it now.
Also YES! Dexter's Diner is the superior hub world and I've always been sad that it wasn't in TCS. I know TCS Modding is becoming a thing so maybe in the future people will figure out how to make custom levels & add Dexter's Diner to the game.
I myself am a proud victim of the 2008 Indiana Jones renaissance.
I wanted "Kingdom of the crystal skull" to be great especially for Shia LaBeouf but it wasn't. I feel like Mutt Williams (Shia's character) could have had a spin off movie if "Kingdom of the crystal skull" had worked out.
If I remember correctly, the pokemon mmo you were talking about was Pokemon Vortex, I used to play it when I was a kid solely because it had like 2 million variations, shiny, light, dark, metal, stone.
Flash games did lift my childhood up as I wasn’t allowed video game consoles. I still remember playing them
anyone else remember in the first movie Indiana Jones and Marion killed the Basilisk by tossing torches at it?
2:36:33
reminds me of a time I was really tired but went with my older brother to deliver corn and he went into the gas station. I had been playing VBA for so long that muscle-memory made me press an invisible space-bar to make him speed up
2008 was amazing for Indy. I wish I was a bit older or a bit younger. I liked Crystal Skull but I was a dumb teenager that felt like I was too old for Indy toys. A year later I realised you can still buy this stuff as an adult but everything had gone away by then. I missed out on the Lego sets, the action figures and everything apart from the Lego games. I took it for granted and assumed it would be around permanently now similar to what happened with Star Wars
I love when he is bored playing the games he just breaks into heathers musical
i would have sworn up and down I had never played a lego indiana jones video game but so much of the gameplay footage is scratching a VERY specific nostalgia itch and i cant figure out where I would have seen this before
I really wish this hype could have been matched for the new one. I was so glad they brought back Lego Indiana Jones this year though
41:15 it may be a deep cut reference to the fact that Luke's lightsaber was originally intended to be blue. It was even blue in a some of the promo art for the film back in the day before it was changed to green for the final release
Lego Indiana Jones for the DS was one of my first DS games ever. The sticker peeled off the cartridge somehow.
There is something oddly comforting about a four and a half hour long CZcams video telling my 30+ year old ass wasting away watching videos that I am "young".
this video unlocked SO MUCH from my childhood. i remeber struggling to beat the boulder flash game and when i finally beat it i never played the others and just got the console game instead. this is so wild
I like how this video is like, 10% actual information then 90% lego indiana jones gameplay, and honestly i aint complaining this is entertaining to watch
It’s been awhile since I’ve played the game, but as I remember you can hold on the jump button to get constant high jump when using the trampoline mechanics, and it’s not a timing thing. Maybe that was only for the pirates of the Caribbean game? Which I think you would also really enjoy.
As soon as I didn't see any Indy Whoppers for Dial of Destiny I knew something was up
True OGs experienced Lego Indiana Jones through the weird two pack where it was Lego Indy 1 with Kung Fu Panda on another disc. It was a weird combo but I loved them both
I REMEMBER THOSE GLOWING SPOONS OMG
I got stuck on lego indiana jones for EVER. And I finally finally finally looked it up years after I lost the game and all I had to do was... go in the background a little farther.
lego indiana jones literally started my obsession with the movies -- love everything about indy.
i loved how this didn't feel 4 hrs long
So, I just rewatched Raiders, and not only does Indy also mispronounce Satipo’s name as “Sapito”, but he’s played by Alfred Molina, Doc Ock from Spider-Man 2!
your commentary is so good every time!! i love listening to ur videos while drawing!! also this is the most metal lego indiana jones playthrough ive seen yes siree
i would literally give anything to watch u complete the game 100%
This has been weirdly entertaining to listen to while working, yes, all 4 hours, uninterrupted save for ads, which were even moreso uninterrupted
that comment about plans for september was really sus. we can’t let andrew near an airport guys!!!
This is incredible, and really nostalgic. Thanks for the great archive of these dope pieces of media!
Dude I been looking for your channel for 3 days now and I couldn’t find it because I remember watching (listening) your 3 hour Xbox video and I recently remembered how great that was and I saw this in my recommended and I was ecstatic I found this channel once again definitely subscribed to make sure I don’t lose this channel.
your vision of what cringe should be is so beautiful and pure
Wild starting to hear you singing the Heathers Musical out of nowhere. I loved it.
You don't know how many times I'm going to rewatch this video. I've been hooked to your content ever since the Babysitter's a Vampire video. Thank you!!
I'm really surprised at how much I enjoyed your commentary in the gameplay section.
Keep up the good stuff👍
i could listen to this guy talk about indiana jones for hours , 4 hours specifically
Mate you just unlocked a forgotten memory about that Star Wars toy figurines versus game 😂 and the LEGO Indiana Jones flash game, gahdamn rip flash
C3PO is in the room with the idle across the way, but you can only get to him in free play mode. You need explosives to break down the shiny metal doors. Hes also not the only Star Wars character because when you find them all you unlock Han Solo.
'Snakes don't have arms' it might be a very early Ninjago reference
Lego Indiana Jones isn't just a childhood memory, it's _the_ childhood memory.
lego light saber? oh you mean the lego sounding rod!
I got to grow up playing this game, lego pirates, lego lotr, lego harry potter, and lego SW complete saga on the DS. Now i'm soloing the lego Skywalker saga and i'm loving it. Great nostalgic video
I had completely forgotten about lego indy 2 and lego batman
lol the guy at the end of raiders with the staff and hat is Beloq, the villain who has appeared throughout the movie
I still have the complete collection of Indiana Jones spoons and Flash light from the cereal promotion.
an hour in i accidentally did some keyboard shortcut that restarted the video and I thought you had just edited in the same section twice and I was like cool let's run it back and I just watched the first 10 minutes again. It held up very well on rewatch 10/10
I specifically remember having the exact same issue with the second level of that flash game where every time I would get through the 2nd level it would just freeze at the vey end and not let me continue. Every single time.
Seeing that whip again blew me back so hard, my mom knew how much I loved Indiana jones as a kid and so she bought me his fedora and that same whip and I remember going to the unfinished guest house we had that looked like a temple with the concrete and beams sticking out and going with my dog as my partner and tying it to a high tree and trying to swing on it and risking my flimsy little eight year old body to fall off, lovely days
OMG I REMEMBER PLAYING THAT INDIANA JOHNES GAME!!!!!! I remember playing it with my sister. I was born in 2008 and had never watched the movies (still haven’t) I know nothing about the movies
My first ever Lego set was an Indiana Jones Lego set that cost 10 bucks and I blame it for a now 15 year addiction
In Lego Indiana Jones, I was playing with my cousin, in the second level it constantly says "women can jump higher than men" and now I quote that everyday.
I hate how in Crystal skull’s Version of Raiders of the lost Ark it doesn’t have a boss fight with the muscle man
The algorithm criminally under rates you
no joke the day after we got a wii we went to walmart to get lego indiana jones, and they fucking "is pepsi ok?"'d us with lego star wars. saddest day of my life and I have never been more betrayed.
I'm happy there's a big section of this video dedicated to the lego games.
My knowledge of indiana jones only comes from the lego indiana jones on psp lmao, and i loved it- i just never watched the movies
