Ewhurst Green - Southern Electric 'Booster' Locomotives

  • Nicknamed 'Hornbys', the first 'Booster' electric locomotive CC1 entered service in 1941 and was initially joined by CC2 (in 1945) thence the visually different CC3 (numbered 20003) in 1948.
    The term 'booster' came from the motor-generator sets within each, where current from the conductor rail powered each 'booster' set's motor driving the attached flywheel and generator in order to provide output to the traction motors.
    The output from the 'booster' sets could then be combined with that obtained directly from the conductor rail to feed the traction motors - hence 'boosting' the power of the locomotive.
    The 'boosters' provided continuous power to the traction motors whilst passing over gaps in the conductor rail; reducing the 'snatching' of couplings across these gaps. In Southern Railway days the number of 'floaters' (short sections of conductor rail at crossovers and junctions) were noticeably fewer than today.
    This 'booster' arrangement was subsequently used in the BR Southern Region's HA (class 71 under TOPS) electric locomotives (albeit using a single 'booster' set and without the flywheel but still sufficient to provide a one-hour 'booster' rating of 4000hp).
    The Southern 'booster' locomotives were allocated class 70 under TOPS although none every carried a TOPS number. Away from the conductor rail, the rotating 'boosters' were not there to provide power for meaningful train movements.
    A number of yards were equipped with 750v overhead wires to enable shunting by electric locomotives; the lightweight overhead wires being cheaper and safer to install in sidings - much testing taking place at Balcombe.
    In 1962 the Southern introduced the type 'JA' electro-diesel whose diesel-engine provided the flexibility of operating away from the conductor rail (albeit on reduced power).
    With the grateful assistance (and much patience) of friends Luke (SR grey & SR malachite versions) and Rod (BR blue version) the running session incorporating all five versions of EFE's new models of CC1 (20001) and CC2 (20003).
    Rod and Luke also brought along further contemporary models to enable their booster locomotives to each operate with appropriately liveried coaching rolling stock for the locomotive's time-periods (including the passing electric units - with yellow warning panels from 1963-on and full yellow ends from 1967-on).

      Yes, completely agree - it is a very valuable resource and I have now fully referenced it (including ISBN) in the text.

    You've got it all running very smoothly. Unlike many collectors of SR stuff, you have taken the trouble to fit conductor rails which makes the layout more convincing and believable! Great camera work with a good choice of angles and shots. Thanks for uploading.

      It has taken time to adjust the track (particularly the slips) and I need to commission the Up Loop /Branch Line so the track can be tested on those.
      The running sessions started out as track-testing before evolving into social sessions with friends. 🥧🍰☕
      Smooth running also involves ensuring correct back-to-back dimensions on the wheelsets and (in many cases) replacement with finescale.
      Having started my railway career on the Southern Region, conductor rail was always going to be 'must'. If you look carefully as there is even a couple of side ramps! ⚡
      Do try to use different camera angles whilst keeping those areas where scenery is incomplete out of shot. Need to first test /access the Up loop /Branch before some of the scenery is finished. 🙂

      @@ewhurstgreen I got the Malachite one. I collect the Pre-Grouping and Southern railway locomotives and rolling stock. And recently started a re paint program of my older BR green Bulleid coaches into Malachite with Southern lettering

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen  Před 4 měsíci

      Excellent - well done! 👍
      I've covered many (but not yet all) of the Bulleid coaches on www.BloodandCustard.com - this includes set formations and liveries.🙂
      As I suspect you are probably already aware, many Bulleid coaches entered service new in CLC (Crimson Lake & Cream) livery without ever receiving Malachite - for example 'L' sets 830 to 849, 'L' sets 850 to 857 and 'H' sets 858 to 865.
      Others Bulleid sets made it from Malachite to BR(S) Green without receiving CLC - for example only eight of 'L' sets 771 to 793 received CLC livery.
      The 1946-built Bulleid 59' & 64' 'Multidoor' stock all entered service in Malachite with all but four of these sets receiving CLC livery before outshopping in BR(S) Green.
      I hope this assists! 🌞

    I have just received my EFE "booster" in Malachite green to suit my Southern Railway themed layout. Very pleased with the model, but the wheel pick-ups are not wonderful, sometimes losing contact with the wheel. As I intend converting from analog to DCC, I shall adjust them when I fit the decoder.
    May I say that your layout looks great. Mine, very loosely based on Seaford, is rather small and has only a couple of 2-Bil EMUs, a Q1, a Schools class and a couple of tank locos in addition to CC1.

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Thank you for your kind comments - your model of Seaford sounds really interesting and great fun. 👍
      Just realised I found your layout CZcams a year ago - it is enjoyable! ⚡
      We also noticed one pair of pickups on Luke's malachite green CC1 were only making intermittent contact. Perceive part of the problem is the excessive lateral play (around 3mm) on each driven axle.
      When time allows will drop each axle and fit some brass washers to reduce the lateral play (undertake this with many models). 🙂

  • @ianmacfarlaine
    @ianmacfarlaine Před 4 měsíci +2

    As an actual Ewhurst resident, the layout looks a bit "urban" to me. Are you working on the basis that the coming of the railway might have made the villages more bulit up??

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen  Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you for your interest - two decades ago used to regularly pass through Ewhurst and Ewhurst Green so must admit to twinges of envy in respect of your residing there. 😉
      The answer to your question is most certainly yes, inevitably the railway would have lead to some development close to the station, particularly being a junction on a direct route to London. 👍
      For example before the railways arrived, Bournemouth and Shaftesbury were of similar size; one was never rail served. 😯
      I perceive the development of places such as Cranleigh and Midhurst was (in part) muted because neither were on a direct railway line to London. Notwithstanding, even the pre-war growth (arguably even into the sixties) of (say) Billingshurst and Pulborough was slow. 🤔
      Hopefully the wooden village garage and its trees yield a semi-rural balance at the London-end (plus the end of a field alongside the Down Bay) as will the country pub (and field opposite) at the Country-End. ⚡

      There is a description on www.EwhurstGreen.com which includes its location and (based on plans that never came to fruition) how the railway might have reached Havant from Holmwood via Ewhurst Green and Midhurst!
      Having designed railways professionally at 12"=1, much time was spent pouring over topographical maps to come up with something reasonably credible - although I suspect Baynards Park might have raised a few objections... 😉
      In terms of the single-story agricultural northlight building, I've just learned that some the extensive Mushroom sheds at Thakeham have now been replaced by housing! 😮
