I think this was oversimplification how nuclear war would happen . A tactical nuke being used by Russia doesn’t mean most of west nuclear weapons get launched at Russia . Another possiblity is conventional weapons being used against Russia tactical nuclear weapons bases or storage stock piles

I don't buy however that the US would assume Russia would not be in a state of extreme readiness after the Russians deploy a nuclear weapon on NATO. A pre-preemptive strike doesn't work when Russia makes the first move.

If they (or anyone else for that matter) launch one (1) nuke there are 2 options :
Opt 1 they are nuked by everyone, even their ally could do, since I think one of the best metods to not be nuked by an ostile power is to say " hey, that dude was an ally, but I never thought that he was so stupid, so look that even I am against nuking someone else by nuking him. Please don't nuke me"
Opt 2 nobody responds by revenge nuking, so every single state (that want to be someone) will start a nuclear program to protect himself; now Congo (an example of a nation that isn't the more stable)has nukes, are you happy? No, because there will be nukes used in every war and civilwar; hope that no country in Africa lose a nuke to some terrorist group that has a problem with your state (or a state near you). And you can't use the treat "if you develop nukes I will invade you" because if you don't you will be at the mercy of everyone else.

A manga recommendation, for those who want to read up on the aftermath of nuclear warfare: Barefoot Gen. It is about a boy who survived WW2, and his home happened to be one of the places that was struck by nuclear fire. This is effectively an autobiography, as the author lived through the calamity.

As a currently serving soldier this video was haunting and extremely well done. It terrifies me to see us entering a second cold war and seeing how fast things can go down hill. I remember my PSG asking me what I'd do if we got word like 100% nukes were in the air. I looked ant him and told him I'd shoot myself; no point in living in a post nuclear war world and at that point any hope I have in humanity would be gone no point to go on.
This whole video I was like if one nuke gets launched. It would be easier with a bullet in the head.

Excellent video. The first half was a great combination of documentary and dark humor; but the second half is exceptional. Got some Tom Clancy vibes there. Extremely well presented and eye opening to how close we may be to the seemingly inevitable once more.
Fortunately if a blast hits your city, most of the deadly radiation will be gone after about a week or two since a lot of the nukes are air bursts. It’s a different story if you live near airbases and missile silos. They’ll get hit by ground bursts.

I thought "The Day After" was the worst depiction of nuclear war. I was wrong. "Threads" left me shellshocked.
When The Wind Blows was jarring enough.
The Day After is the hardest you can get on commercialized US television (and they didn't even have any commercial slots after the nukes blew!), but Threads didn't had that limit. Even featured an F-bomb. When The Wind Blows, IMO, emotionally hits the hardest, especially as it focuses on an older couple who survived the Blitz and don't fully understand that pluck and stiff upper lips are poor shields against gamma radiation.

I mean, I feel like a lot of nuclear apocalypse scenarios forget that the southern hemisphere exists, and also over-value how long nuclear winter conditions will last. Most reputable models suggest that sunlight blocking would last a few months, at most, and radiation levels would fall to a "safe" level (still highly increased chance of cancer, but you'd be able to live your life) in 3-6 weeks. The initial death tally losses, but I'd imagine the likes of Australia and most of South America would come out /mostly/ okay, as the majority of such are politically stable, net-exporters of crops. Various states in the Midwestern USA would likely come out politically intact and be self sufficient, as well, due to low population density, established governments with clear lines of succession, and again, being resource self-sufficient for the most part. There would be a decided time of difficulty, but I think such establishments, and at least some form of the USA would come out the other end of the nuclear war. In a bit of irony, as for Europe, I'm fairly sure the Balkan nations are the most likely to survive as intact political bodies, alongside Iberia, though I'm not sure how they would handle the subsequent refugee crisis that would follow such a scenario. Various southeast Asian nations would survive as well in such a scenario, as would India. It's really less "end of the world" and more "End of the current world order."
How well NATO comes out of it al;so depends on just how well the Russian Nuclear arsenal works. Nukes are fantastically expensive weapons to maintain. And they have to be maintained, otherwise the nuclear material in them will degrade into not being able to cause a nuclear detonation. The US spends 60 billion a year maintaining the arsenal of about 4000. That's Russia's entire military budget and they have a bigger stockpile. Given just how badly Russia has cut corners with its regular military it would not shock me if a significant portion of that stockpile has degraded into is uselessness, if not the vast majority of it, leading to a scenario where dud nuclear warheads smash into some random buildings in many NATO Cities. And that's providing some Russian general didn't sell off the nuclear material in many of the warheads and replaced it with sand or something equally absurd.
What has also helped compared to older nuclear scenario's is that warhead sizes have shrunk as weapon accuracy has increased, leading to the big multi megaton warheads being slowly phased out.
You can see in the video the estimated fallout of radiation and how much the sun would be blocked for both hemispheres. The northern hemisphere is basically fucked.
In the southern hemisphere the sun would be 30% blocked for weeks, enough to badly damage the agriculture. The radiation would still reach it and cause damage and maybe interdiction zones. They would not be "fine" but maybe they would survive. The population would decrease slowly until food production could reach it since almost all the south hemisphere imports food.
So yeah, if you fear nuclear warfare you should emigrate to South Africa, South America or Australia (if not targeted by China) and prepare crops that don't need a lot of sun nor water... that's the hard part.
@@ClemDiamond south America is mostly fine, as the southern countries of that continent is a net food exporter, and is the native source of potatoes, which can deal with reduced sunlight conditions quite well.
Australia has more problems, but still is near enough to self sufficient that while there would be some dieoff in the opening years, it could support a reasonable population.
Idk man a total global nuclear war would release more ash than the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs - and that winter lasted for years. I think our estimates tend to be too conservative.

Or rather to be more accurate, even if all the nukes were ground-impact, even if such caused more ash to be created, it would not be to the elevation that the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, and there's more than ash that it kicked up into the atmosphere, total particulate and particulate hang-time in atmosphere are well on the meteor's favor here. You need to remember that a lot of particulate got stuck in low-earth orbit from the meteor in question, and particulate from nukes doesn't tend to reach that high. Especially from the lower-yield nukes that make up the majority of those in use today. (usually in the 0.5-5MT range, with China being on the high end with 10MT warheads as their standard)
And most nukes are set up to be airburst, to cause wider blast and radiation damage, rather than focusing on the fireball. But airburst nukes cause a tiny fraction of the ash and particulate creation in comparison to ground impact estimates that are usually cited when trying to inflate nuclear winter concerns.

I feel the need to point out that TLAM-Ns are officially decommissioned. Victim of one of the STARTs, I believe, so nuclear cruise missile strikes on the BLUFOR side - if any - would likely be AGM-158-A/B JASSM and -C LRASMs as well as the French ALCMs.
Additionally, the global dimming hypothesis/"nuclear winter" has been disputed by more recent simulations.

One thing that you forgot to mention in your weapons description are MIRV, abbreviation of Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle, any of several nuclear warheads carried on the front end, or “bus,” of a ballistic missile. Each MIRV allows separately targeted nuclear warheads to be sent on their independent ways after the main propulsion stages of the missile launch have shut down. Thus a "force multiplier" in that one missile can deliver multiple warheads to several different targets.

As completely messed up and dark as this topic is, I do love that Russians have an unbreakable infatuation with putting incredibly destructive rocket weapons on the backs of trucks.
Yeah I don't really trust Russian truck maintenance that much. Imagine if the speeder gets stuck or the breaks fail under transport. The US has had 32 broken arrow incidents. Imagine how many the soviets and Russia has had.
Nuclear war casualty estimates: 5 to 7.5 billion. Quick summary: worldwide fallout, nuclear winter, breakdown of the food chain, mass extinction and possible extinction of the human species.
Very long summary: Total nuclear exchange between belligerent powers could potentially involve in its entirety detonations in excess of 5k megatons (5 billion tons of TNT) over significant portions of the northern hemisphere. Initial death toll within 24 hours is estimated at 300-500 million with variances dependent on use of fallout shelters and evacuation procedures. Both atmospheric and surface level detonations are expected to produce a significant number of EMP (electromagnetic pulse) discharges at various ranges. These would render most electronic devices and power grids inoperable. This includes a majority of ground, aerial and marine transport. Follow on casualties from injuries such as severe burns, those trapped in collapsed buildings, patients with electronic medical devices such as pacemakers and others would account for a further 100-200 million deaths shortly thereafter. Past this point casualties would continue to increase as a further 400-700 million are expected to succumb to radiation poisoning and cancer in the proceeding weeks and months. A substantial number of these fatalities are expected outside the belligerent powers borders as radioactive particles are spread globally via atmospheric currents. The dispersion of radioactive material would mainly occur via a west to east wind-stream until forming a semi-uniform belt of particles primarily encircling the northern hemisphere from 30° to 60° latitude. Computer model predictions show lethal levels of atmospheric radiation lasting anywhere from a minimum of 3-5 years, upwards of 20-30 years in some scenarios.
Secondarily a nuclear winter may result as a consequence of runaway firestorms in both urban and rural areas. The injection of smoke and soot, particularly black carbon entering the upper atmosphere from the burning of petroleum fuels and plastics in destroyed cities is expected to lower global temperatures between 11C to 22C (52F TO 72F) for a period of 2-3 years under optimistic projections. With some modeling showing global temperatures being partially affected for several decades. The result of this drastic temperature change is expected to deplete global agricultural yields in excess of 80-90%. Potentially causing a further 4-6 billion global fatalities due to starvation. With the casualty variation being highly dependent on proper use of food stocks and rationing from the remaining populace. Several studies have also posited that the layer of ozone in the stratosphere that shields living things from much of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation might be severely damaged or depleted by large amounts of nitrogen oxides produced by thousands of congruent nuclear explosions.
Even without a nuclear winter; the overwhelming majority of industrial fertilizer, artificial non pollinating seeds and agricultural equipment manufacturing that is responsible for the consequential increase in crop yields of the past century, is located within the belligerent countries territories. Studies estimating planetary carrying capacity using preindustrial agricultural practices provide a range of 600-800 million as being sustainable in terms of a global population. Unfortunately released data from declassified belligerent parties war plans cite the destruction of fertile agricultural regions as a priority. And with the majority of global arable farmland located within the targeted northern hemisphere, planetary carrying capacity would be significantly reduced. With some modeling predicting a meager 200-300 million as being sustainable afterwards. Additionally the majority of pharmaceutical manufacturing for both antivirals and antibiotics, along with medical equipment is produced by the belligerent countries. Loss of these facilities would compound the spread of disease along with subsequent conditions. Further adding to the substantial number of unpredictable fatalities.
With the destruction of much of the northern hemisphere, global trade for all intents and purposes would cease to function. As all major air/sea ports, navigable rivers and rail/road ways within the belligerent states intersect continental economic zones that would now be impassable due to radioactive contamination and debris. Per UN food sustainability studies, between 58%-62% of countries are dependent on food imports. A further strain on food distribution would be the loss of major fuel refining facilities based within the belligerent countries. As 65% percent of refined fuels production originates from the belligerent nations. Fuel shortages would compound already strained food stocks, leading to a potential breakdown in local supply chains. Even within countries classified as food sustainable estimates put 70%-74% of populations further than 200km (a weeks travel by horse-cart) of their respective agricultural regions. As most produce is perishable within a few days without refrigeration this would create a hunger crisis for isolated population centers. In addition ocean fauna would also be dangerous to consume as rain/snow runoff funnels radioactive material along with debris containing large concentrations of lead and other heavy elements from destroyed cities and factories into coastal waters.
Under these conditions remaining governments would face a monumental task in attempting to maintain law and order. Possibly resulting in the breakdown of civil society and extreme lawlessness across the globe. Rate of homicides from confrontations over dwindling resources during this period can't be calculated with certainty but expected to be significant. Furthermore acts of cannibalism have been documented during prior historical crisis events involving food shortages and thus would undoubtably occur. It is outside the scope of this report to predict a time frame for the reemergence of organized civil society and or a return to stable population capacity.
Lastly even survivors who may have been fortunate enough to escape the destruction in underground bunkers will face extreme difficulty upon emerging onto the surface. As once food stocks are depleted they will have to grow crops in irradiated soil and likely without pollination. Most organic crops such as wheat, barley, corn, fruit and nut trees, etc., all require bee pollination. Bees have a particular sensory modality allowing them to detect electric fields. And thus they are especially susceptible to large amounts of electromagnetic radiation. The drastic temperature changes along with surface radiation may render them and most terrestrial animals extinct. Along with a significant portion of marine life. Final estimate for a total nuclear exchange is between 5 to 7.5 billion casualties. With a moderate chance of complete human extinction.

If there is any saving grace for this scenario the US and Russia only have 1/10th of their Peak stockpile. With most being the tactical nukes. Thankfully Nuclear Radiation from bombs has a half life of 2 days. Also Russia is not exactly known for PMing their weapons considering the 60% failure rate of conventional missiles in Ukraine. Not something I want to test though.
Another saving grace is that nuclear war apparently won't plunge us into another ice age, although temperatures will drop enough to disrupt agriculture. Apparently recent models done show that the dust nuclear war can kick up doesn't compare to something like Toba the Yellowstone Supervolcano...
It's still pretty scary that we're relying on enough Russian nukes not working and/or Putin retaining just enough sanity to not launch his nukes.

I've been living with this nightmare since 1956, when I was old enough to begin grasping what WWIII would mean. I have never stopped being aware that, despite a seemingly relaxed period after the collapse of the USSR, the danger had gone away, lessened or had become more unlikely. Daniel Ellsberg's book "The Doomsday Machine" makes this abundantly clear. Prof. Noam Chomsky has been saying that nuclear annihilation and climate change are existential threats that cannot wait for solutions. The disposition and posture of the nuclear powers has not moved away from the edge they encountered some decades ago. And yet, governments and populations around the planet have parked their anxieties and have left everything simmering and threatening to boil over - whether by accidents (very, very narrowly averted in decades past) or prompted by geopolitical contests as in then current Ukrainian conflict. What fools we "imperfectly evolved mammals are" [Christoper Hitchens].

The Soviet Union didn't just collapse by accident. It collapsed due to mass corruption, constantly changing leadership, and financial failings(The irony). Reagan's renewed focus on Russia only hastened its fall, it was on the downward slop since the early 80's. Its actually impressive that the USSR collapsed without a final death wail(Nukes).
I was more referring to how the Berlin Wall came down and the collapse of the USSR in terms of the coup. Both situations went completely wrong and against the intentions of all involved. On both sides. They became leviathans that no one could actually control. Kind of a theme of the video.

I get the feeling. I live in a city in Atlantic Canada that has an air force base, and army base, a naval base with both warship and submarine repair facilities, oil storage facilities, cargo port facilities and government offices. My city is likely a target for a ground burst thermonuclear weapon. If there is no warning of an attack allowing time for me to evacuate, I have no hope of surviving such an event even in the short term.
My two main hopes are that such an event never comes to pass and if it does I hope that Russia forgets about my home just like my own Federal Government does.

Same here. Grew up within 3 miles of RAF command, moved to within 5 miles of the UK's ULW transmitters - the ones used to talk to the UK's subs. Both priority Alpha Strike targets. I figure if it all goes pear shaped, I'm close enough that the first I'd know of it would be unexpectedly arriving in the great beyond...

It wasn’t so much that they launched one strike. It was that the Russians demonstrated they were going to use chemical and biological weapons. And that as a result the Americans decide that to protect their forces and allies they need to deny the Russians their WMD capability with their more advanced first strike weapons. However they miscalculate as the Russians were paranoid about the US hitting back and so were at launch readiness when the Americans fired.

It's harrowing, and i would recommend watching it only if you are in a sound state of mind and not overly anxious about nuclear attack. It's grim. This isn't some fun Mad Max/ Fallout/Doomsday stuff, this is more akin to "When The Wind Blows".

I remember an episode of Sliders, the parallel reality-hopping 90s sci-fi show, where they arrive in a reality where something has rendered most men sterile. Australia escapes most of this damage because of it's geographical location (I'm not sure how safe Australia would be from fallout if a full nuclear WW III kicks off, especially since the whole submarine debacle).

One factor should be considered. Russian oligarch pilfered a large majority of their ACTIVE military assets. What would be the CURRENT state of their NUCLEAR arsenal (which everyone knows there won't be a Russia to hold them responsible for stealing IF those need to be used). If Putin is not a fool he KNOWS that an attempted countervalue strike, that only ends up launching 50-60-70% of their missiles succesfully, will still entail a full on US/NATO counterstrike. That COULD be the possible reason he's so blatantly threatening with nuclear war is probably him tactically playing on the wests' fears you detailed, to make sure noone will even dare call his bluff.
Our boomer elite making decision seems to forget the the USSR HAS FALLEN. Russia is NOT the USSR, it's a third world country that MADE a living peddling his raw material (that they cannot even extract themselves without western corprations), but has nowhere near the industrial capacity or manpower the USSR had. Also I recall an important fact about nukes that relates to this very fact: Nukes, as far as I remember, have a shelf life of about 10-15 years without maintenance. Meaning NONE of the soviet era nukes are operable at this point if they were not maintained, which is not even a distant possibility, seeing the current state of the modern ACTIVE armaments of the russian army
Also, it feels more and more Putin is using the western powers' fear of nuclear war to get WHATEVER he wants the same way a certain austrian Chaplin used the western powers' fear of another Great War to get whatever he wanted.
