my teach taught this to me in year 9. i was top set, and pretty lazy, so my attention span those lessons was... lackiing. Reading the comments, I see a few people getting confused on the last question where we "+1" so allow me to elaborate.
The reason the last part is "-2n+1", and not "-2n-1". The "+1" , allow me to explain:
-1, -3, -5, -7, -9
We evaluate our sequence and observe how it's moving. The sequence is moving in the negative times 2 pattern so:
-2, -4, -6, -8, -10
Now lets write them both together,
-1, -3, -5, -7, -9

On the test deciding which 8 students are going, the first question had something about quadratic sequences. I didn't know what they were at the time, and got it wrong.
