- France, 1942: A serial killer stalks the streets of Occupied Paris. Using the chaos of the war to his own advantage, psychotic doctor Marcel Petiot poses as a resistance operative and preys on those most desperate to flee the Nazi regime - Jews, criminals and underground partisans. As the body count rises, both the French police and the Gestapo race against time to bring him to justice.

The pursuit of individual murder cases during time of war followed up with research up to recent times makes this series a go to.
David King's book "Death In The City Of Light" is a superb rendering of this macabre tale.
What an excellent documentary, especially because of the comprehensive description of the historical context. Thanks.
Excellent Documentary -both the research and presentation!
Absolutely brilliant documentary. Not just about Petiot, but a wonderfully described backdrop of occupied France.
This story should be a movie; an antihero movie with a very handsome actor (to account for his charisma) and all the war, resistance, social and geopolitical factors that contributed clearly portrayed.
I first read about this case years ago, but this is the first/best presentation on it I’ve seen.
Bro I was just sitting with dinner thinking what should I watch, you guys combined my two most interesting topics in one. Lol😂

Right?! I've found my people. Lol (this group, not the group we're watching) felt like I had to clarify that. Lol

Looking forward to this! Ryan Green the true crime author wrote an excellent book about this guy! He's a very good writer, 👍 😊
Incredible story presented in an amazing documentary
I agree.
Great documentary. The story of Petiot, blended with the context of the war gives a bigger clearer picture.
This reminded me a bit of Dr. H.H. Holmes, the Victorian American serial killer who was also a con-man and killed for profit. Both took advantage of chaotic times, and both were prolific at what they did, including dismemberment of their victims- but with the ultimate goal being financial gain. Both trafficked (or promised to traffic) some of their victims to other places, and offered lodging. These cases were an ocean apart and nearly 50 years between, but their similarities struck me.
And how about Harold Shipman? Bringing it into the 90's/00's; 250 victims, and all for profit...
i will have to research dr h h homes, i have never heard of him!
@@EdgyMTB……Shipman didn’t profit from his murders other than what sick pleasure he got from ending lives. It’s true he did falsify a will which ultimately brought about his undoing but it was a pathetic effort at forgery and would never have been successful. The typewriter he used to forge the document was still in his office. The forgery was full of errors. The co-signers knew nothing of it. It was never going to be accepted by the victim’s family. It is believed he did it so as to get caught and bring an end to his killing.
What an insane story of WW2.
Terrible and fascinating, the backdrop surreal and so compelling to the story I couldn't believe my ears and eyes! Very well done documentary.
Este caso y este asesino superan cualquier ficción. Una oración por sus víctimas.
If this was a film plot I would think it was too unbelievable to be true.
When the Gestapo of all people says “Arrest Petiot he is a maniac”, one is left with no doubt whatsoever as to the man’s bona fides.
I met a 4-year-old psychopath when I was the same age. The speaker is being prejudiced when saying it starts at 7. From birth wouldn't be an exaggeration.
I taught a 4 year old posiopath, I tried to tell the school, his mother. This child was without conscience and lied constantly, said sorry when caught out but never meant it or learned empathy. Totally evil.
It just doesn’t make sense to say this because little tiny kids already have no empathy. It’s taught and developed around 5/6 years old, as a young kiddo. My daughter isn’t very empathetic but definitely not a sociopath lol. Little kids can’t be properly tested for things such as these.
When he smiled, he looked like my departed grandfather, whom I've loved very much all my life. That scares me.
great documentary thank you
Wow! What an incredible story! Thanks sincerely.
Seriously unbelievable with a horrific war going on🤦♀️
God bless all who escaped, my dad's mom's family escaped Holland and my mom's dad escaped Poland because of the nazis.
Why did the Nazis help them escape ?
I saw the movie with Michel Serrault back in the 90's and saw many documentaries about Petiot and I learned more about him in this one.
Which film is that? I’d love to see it…

A fantastic work! Great background and built up.
Love history, an amazing programme. These victims should never be forgotten and their loved ones! He doesn't deserve a mention!
You can't mention those that were lost if you tell the world who did IT.
Brilliant documentary
I was married to one of those. The psychopathic brain runs in the family. Experiencing two major traumas before the age is 7 he didn’t stand a chance. Very covert, he gets kicks out of all kinds of pain. Despite being a math genius he ended up with a job handling people. Being the best at it he made 10’s of thousands in bonuses.
You should have stayed and enjoyed the bonuses. Is it too late to get him back?

Never heard of this guy, Petiot. Very interesting documentary.
How sad for all his victims, trying to survive a war, being a jew,and then to die to an (unsuspected) murderer.
I wonder why his wife survived as she had a son to him,yet Louise was killed?
Why does it play at double speed? That makes it unintelligible. 0:51
Reminds me of H.H. Holmes.
A true opportunist with an ultimate killing machine disguised as a hotel.
Interesting and informative. Excellent photography job enabling viewers to better understand what the orator was describing. Special thanks to the guest speakers sharing personal researched information. Along with Dr. Petiot/business associates & last if not least the unaware victims😇😇😇😇. Making this documentary more authentic and possible!!!
Chilling, superbly edited and well researched documentary, thank you!! PS Who was the blond Afrikaans tannie in the narration?
Wondered the same myself😂😂😂
Enjoying this very much . Awesome
Funny how crazy crimes go on despite the horror of war
Not really , i would expect them.
Narcissists in war only see opportunity in the disruption of other's lives, they have no care for the fact of that disruption because it doesn't affect them personally.
Gestapo raced against time to bring him to justice? They had very similar goals and methods, it is hard to understand why he didn't tell them about his "achievements".
😂😂😂I shouldn’t laugh but this is ironic. Both of them are savages
Petiot looked down on the Gestapo as a bunch of lightweights.
Well researched
Thanks!!👍
The historical backstory is almost more interesting than the serial killer story. Clearly researched and well presented. I always thought, even I wanted to murder people ( which I don't), getting rid of the bodies just seams way too cumbersome.
Very well said, HA HA HA.
Does that mean you want to kill people. So disturbing comment
rule no1, No shallow graves
Can't even imagine how much work it would be to kill someone and get rid of the body. That's probably why a lot of these guys that get away with it are more interested in the actual body than the killings. To keep up the adrenaline.
So you don’t have a problem with the morality of murder, you’ll just find it too ‘cumbersome’ to dispose of your victims. Well, I suppose we should be thankful there’s at least something that’s stopping you from being an English Petiot lol

The very idea of the Gestapo having any idea of justice, let alone being able to dispense it correctly, is frankly ludicrous.

And the hate groups and religious fanatics.
As long as we still have democracy and rule of law we do not need anti-democratic, illegal and extra-legal “resistance” movements. We should be doing our utmost to encourage a renewed faith in our liberal democratic institutions, egalitarianism, civic-mindedness, and rule of law. We should encourage all wage-earning, working class and small entrepreneurial citizens to join together regardless of the divisive “culture war” beliefs being cynically sown to divide us from each other by the minority hierarchical oligarchic ruling class elite and their enablers among the political class and the more hysterical, non-factual “media” types. If there’s anything we should be “resisting” it’s the “culture war” itself, so that we wage-earning working class people can focus instead on the material economic issues we all share an interest in, regardless of the cultural differences being cynically emphasized by the wealthy, only to make us suspicious of one another, and to tear us apart from each other.

I tuned in thinking i was about to watch a documentary on a serial killer and ended up with a history lesson about World War II
✡️ I grew up with sleeves riding up tatooed arms and smiling faces with eyes permanently etched in grief. Survivor's homes, in an era of large families, 1-2 children, a strange pervasive silence permeated & a palpable pall hit you when you walked in the door. Incredibly sad environments, the children, my contemporaries, damaged.
The pall of sadness?
@@MademoiselleButterfly grief, anguish, guilt almost unclaimed. Just there, like suitcases in a room that everyone tiptoed around. I could tell the minute I walked in if a survivor(s) lived there. I never really thought about it at the time with the exception of 2 stark incidents of feeling almost overwhelmed by it as a teenager going to two different homes with the classmates that lived there. That was when I began the thought process of what their reality was in comparison to my own. I was a rarity, a shiksa from a large family in a primarily Jewish neighborhood with many non Jewish friends in other neighborhoods.
That's very interesting. You have described my home. I grew up in Los Angeles in the 50's and the 60's. It was a sad and gloomy household. My mother was a very dark, damaging figure.

Oooooo, I love hearing about Dr Satan!
My God! It's Del-Boy Trotter!
He was a thief and a psychopathic murderer.
I used this to fall asleep
He would have been a serial killer witrhout the war. Only difference maybe would be he wouldnt have been able to get away with it for so long.
"He fell in love for the first time" - I'm pretty sure psychopaths can't fall in love.
The most disturbing behavior to me anyhow is how Petiot allowed himself to be tortured by the Nazi's for SO long...
Psychopaths don't suffer the mounting anxiety that torture brings, they are unreactive. They also aren't courageous, they just lack fear, which is not the same thing. The book, "The Psychopath Test" by Jon Ronson is really good!
He's a psychopath.. he prob enjoyed it.. lol But as he is psychologically unwell,I guess the torture didn't affect his psyche as it would a "normal" person. IDK?
How many people are living near you that would take out you and your family for a former president?
asking for a friend
Only one Petiot caught. The nightmare question is how many other Petiots got away?
All those who called there killings and murder as an act of "resistance". And that was alot of bolsheviks in france.
Make a one About Polish resistance
This is a very very interesting story it reminds me of H.H Holmes in the USA. I cannot believe he only got charged with 27 yet, he committed 63 murders. I really feel bad for the children and the innocent people that just wanted to leave all the hate of the Nazis 😮😢😢😢
This is a case of evil within evil well wrapped up in an enigma . I had not heard of this case and I live in France but it is undoubtedly the most interesting case of criminal subterfuge documented on You Tube .I must say it also highlights my innate dislike of the French whom in my dealings with them remain unpredictable and untrustworthy . The leopard does not change it's spots . Well down !
Night of the generals.
At 40:44 Fly Tox in line of Petiot sight. Fact. Later appearing in Usual Suspects: "Kobayashi, Redfoot, ...."
This was made into a Film in France some time back.
Yup, "Le Crime de Dr Petiot' starring Michel Serrault' Well worth hunting out, but check out for subtitled if your French isn't good...
This reminds me of HH Holmes
There were not really à lot of résistance. Maximum 10000 in thé whole of France. There were a lot of collaborateurs
I believe that . The ‘Resistance’ always seemed a highly romanticized ‘after the fact’ retelling - While it of course existed, we’re ‘courageous’ and obviously did ‘good works,’ seems like ‘look how we were cleverly fighting all along’
As is the way of most of all people- not just the French- I also heard that there was no net gain from their activities due to the draconian reprisals of the Germans
Charles de Gaulle really had no clue
"Spain was neutral" eh....I dont know if thats the proper word.
@ThatChapter This is insane. A story to consider?
I wonder if his wife ever knew or suspected stuff? If not, what she felt when she found out? **Chilling**
Could you please do some documentaries on the evil and murderous Communist USSR? Or China?
Id also like to see your take on the intentional starving deaths of millions, the Holodomor.
In the midst of germany before the war also had a serial killer and the gestapo refused to believe it was a german eventually he was caught and gillotined but litterally amassed many murders .
the nebulous background music is comically annoying
I hate crass 'motivational' muzak but I thought this was alright.

If you look into his eyes (this always has to be done without distraction(s), for instance, one often has to actively disregard the rest of the subject's facial expressions, if necessary by covering up the rest of the face, cause the further expressions are purely physical in nature and completely unrelated to the person's deeper, possibly hidden emotions etc, believe it or not! - which means for means of interpretation the rest of the face in the image one examines is more of a distraction than that it would be an actual source of truthful information (which fits the fact a psychopath is always a total actor)... if you observe the expression in those eyes and those eyes alone, like on the photograph shown at 14:03, you WILL see all of the intent, the hatred, all of the inhuman(e) sentiment that is there, and that is (present) in the person being observed. The Eyes Never Lie; the expression in one's eyes always reveals the truth!
