He is the personification of the Russian people’s rage. Against both their Nazi invaders and their Soviet oppressors. He is a ghost brought back by his own sheer will to wreak retribution on those that have wronged and betrayed him and his countrymen

What if he made it out of vorkuta, there was never a body, sure he pulled over but what about the ominous emails hudson gets on the BO1 terminal, he probably died but just maybe he got out
