    ******really gruesome SPOILERS for Small Pleasures // tw s/xual assault*****
    the first 3/4 of the book is charming and all the characters are so sweet to each other. the friendships and everything are beautifully written and our main character's life is changing for the better - she's happy for the first time in a long time. I cannot stress how wholesome and nice this book was.
    The twist comes at the very end when the "Virgin Mom" character suddenly runs away to live with her former roommate at the all-women's hospital with who she was in love with. She reached out to our main character to prove she hadn't had relations with a man so that her roommate would accept her. The family falls apart and the young daughter hates her mom's girlfriend and it's just bad news. In the meantime the mom's husband (who married her to help her because unmarried mothers at that time were shunned) is heartbroken because he loved his little family, even if he knew his wife wasnt attracted to him. BUT the journalist and husband have also been falling in love. They dream of getting married and adopting the daughter now that the mom has left them. (the romance is really sweet tbh the husband is a good guy) The mom is just kind of thrown out as trash in this story, the author did her dirty.
    Also at this time, the journalist is still investigating and finds out that at the head doctor/nun (?) all-women's hospital had a brother who was mentally ill. He somehow raped the virgin mom in her sleep and that's how she got pregnant. The virgin mom just never knew.
    THEN when everything seems to be somewhat solved and the journalist and husband are going to be together and start this precious loving life, *the husband gets in a horrific train accident and dies on his way to meet the journalist's mother and officially start their relationship* end book.
    😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐

    Read HOSAB in two days. I was literally walking around like just the shell of a person trying to process what the heck I just read and that LAST. FREAKING. LINE. If someone asked me, could I tell anything that happened in the book? No. Literally no clue. BUT it was a trip and I will definitely read the next one even if it’s just for the experience HAHAHAHAHAHA

How did she go from point A to point D in a span of a few chapters? lmao SJM is the type of author who if I think too hard about the plot of her books, I'll just hate it but if I just consume it without a thought in my brain, its the perfect read lol

    I felt the same way with Our Violent Ends! I appreciated that the stakes were way higher and that we got to see more of the inner workings of each family, but the scenes and settings changed so quickly that I felt disconnected. And personally, I was kind of disappointed with the ending. Not how it actually ended, but the writing of the final climax. In that moment, I wish we had spent more time actually in the scene with Juliette, Roma, and Dimitri as opposed to flitting between them, Kathleen, and Marshall and Ben and Alisa; I think actually staying in that scene longer would've made it more impactful. Because everything happened so quickly, I just kinda lost steam and wasn't emotionally invested...

      @peekabae8808 Před 2 lety

      I just read this comment, and YES! this book would have been so darn good if the pacing of the plot was far slower and similar to the first one. It changed so much compared to how she wrote in Our Violent Delights, and I was really disappointed. It turned out quite messy and overwhelming and I just went “What Is HAPPENING” while reading it. Really angry about this, because I wanted to love it SO much but it was sooooo upsetting. The only reason this one got a 4+ star for me was because of the ending, i re read it while playing sad music and actually bawled my eyes for 40 minutes…

    Honestly, I feel like Outlander wraps up perfectly after the second book/season. After that, it gets really awful and even offensive in spots. I actually refuse to believe that anything after the 2nd book/season is canon. 😂
    I also shouted “WTF” when finishing House of Sky and Breath… on the one hand, I’m thoroughly amused like I’m watching a bad TV show. On the other hand, I don’t see why that had to happen!! Ugh.

As an autistic person myself I just wanted to let you know that the term Aspergers isn’t really used anymore, it’s all just referred to as autism or being on the autism spectrum 😊 Not a lot of people know much about autism or being neurodivergent so I always take the chance to educate if I’m able to ❤️ Also, we usually say neurodivergent and not neuroatypical! I’m super glad you mentioned it though, I definitely want to read The Maid now and see what I think about it ☺️

    My favourite februari read has to be the girl who fell beneath the sea by Axie Oh. It's based on a korean folklore story called the Tale of Shim Cheong and the vibes in this were so magical, I could see the story play out like a kdrama. Aside from the synopsis I didn't know much about it going into it but I thought the story was very beautifully written and it really touched my heart a couple of times (really it's just a story about the heart and this will make sense when you read it). I also love that it's a stand alone and it wraps itself up quite nicely. I would totally recommend!

    I also read Yolk recently, and was really impressed by it. At first I was like "omg I know she has a complex and that's sad, but this lady is kind of annoying with the self-loathing" but by the end her journey from that point and reconnecting with her sister was so worth it and beautiful and realistic. It made me want to reach out to my little sister. I only rated it 4 stars, but I keep thinking about it, so maybe it deserves a higher rating.

    I screamed too at the end of HoSaB. I'm just like whaattt...it really does have so much stuff going on. I've been reading so much I finished HoSaB (I think was better than the 1st book, but not my fav Sarah J. Maas.), The King of Scars Duology (I think I liked this better than the other books other than the first Shadow and Bone), The Binding (omg so good), The Great Witch of Brittany by Louisa Morgan (4th book not my fav, interesting, but the covers of these books drew me in/kind of like Practical Magic sequels), The Iron Sword by Julie Kagawa (love this series). I've been reading the last few days The Whims of Fae series by Nissa Leder (on book 3, very easy reading) and reading Kingdom of the Wicked this month. I read the first four books in the Outlander series and loved them. I don’t know how I got through them though. The first two were the best and they should have/ could have been shorter. I can’t continue with the series due to the length of the series and the length of the books. Some people still write like they’re getting paid by the word.

    I listened to the Outlander books at 3x speed so didn't notice how long they were. I like how the books start out with the one couple but end up being about the entire family by the end (so far). You should watch the show. It's not a perfect adaptation but it does the job imo.

    So I only read House of Earth and Blood because House of Sky and Breath was coming out. Anyway, I read them both in about a week and I had already read like all of Sarah's other books. And when I tell you, all of the theories my friend group came up with for the next books- They're almost as chaotic as Sarah's actual writing.

Sorry you had a rough reading month...March has been that way for me so far-ugh. I picked The Cartographers too, so I'm hoping it is a good one!!

    CC2 pissed me off so much! I loved Earth and Blood but the second book just threw it all. All that drama in the beginning and for what? And how am I reading a completely different book and still get THOSE characters? I was so mad. I know a lot of people loved the twist but not me 🙅🏽‍♀️ Is the series not selling that much that's why SJM did that? I won't be anticipating CC3 now. I'll probably just wait for spoilers 😂

  • @isyvd
    @isyvd Před 2 lety +2

    Sometimes I think about how 14 year old me (in 2014) had an idea for a story and it was just all supernatural beings you could imagine thrown into one world and yes, that also included angels. But as I got older I was like 'there are way too many characters omg it's too complicated to fit them into one story and give them all a personality' and I ended up scrapping all those thoughts at 16 to just start from scratch and think of another story concept. So knowing that 16yo me thought my own concept was too convoluted, I am absolutely baffled that SJM had a similar idea and went 'hey, you know what?? I can make a book series out of this! And I'll add so many characters!! And make each book 800 pages long!!!' It's actually crazy to me. I'm convinced the publishers don't even bother reviewing the actual story anymore because they know anything with her name on it will sell, no matter how long or complicated it is.
    Edit: I just got to the part where you explain that the series has aliens....It just went above and beyond anything 14yo me could even have the nerve to dream up

    I didn't like Crescent City very much but had to read House of Sky and Breath -- did lots of "fastforwarding" after the first adult situation...fae/adult situation, skipped entire conversations because they added nothing to plot progression. I didn't care a toss about what was happening in the story until Tharion's first proper plot point. And what about that ending? The very ending, last 20ish-pages ending? I have to know how that last line unfolds according to Sarah J. Maas's mind's eye. I friggin screamed at the very, very ending! Part shriek, part "ugh."

The moment my friend told me the twist and the ending, without even reading it, I wanted to fly to wherever the author was and have a serious talk. If I have read it, I would have not only thrown this book into a wall, but possibly also burned it.
