Tactical tomahawks, as one might imagine, capitalize on that battlefield association - albeit with more up-to-date constructions and uses in mind. Contrasting with their more-traditional steel-and-wood hatchet brethren, tactical tomahawks are often much more aggressive in their styling and are usually built with more modern materials, especially in regards to their handles.
Tactical Tomahawks capitalize on that specialization even further, offering exceptional durability, packability, and multi-functionality.
These weapons are exceptional because they are compact and lightweight but still manage to help with many different tasks. They aren’t just aimed for combat and self-defense uses either. They are also great for recreational activities such as hunting or your local tomahawk throwing championship. Yes, that’s a real thing!

Mostly novelty hawks for preppers. You want a quality hawk that is practical, get one hand forged. $100-$150 you can get an excellent and obscenely sharp hawk if you know where to go. Whether you want a throwing hawk, a hiking/survival hawk, or heavier pole hawk, there are forges out there that meet your needs without resorting to this junk. I have a couple on this list that are dull and near useless. But regardless of the purpose, I'd take any of the several different styles of hand forged hawks off my wall before a single one on this list. The only plausible exception is in an urban setting, the pry bar on the end could be useful.

a Survival axe or hatchet or tomahawk should be practical and not just made for hand to hand combat. Practical is better than tactical.

I've been throwing tomahawks since the early 80's, long before any of these high priced gadgets came out. You want a good old school "Tactical" tomahawk. The Cold Steel Spike Hawk, and you wont pay an arm and a leg. Sure it has a wooden handle, make it easy to replace in the field if you break it. Another good thrower is the Cold Steel Norse Hawk. Looks like something right out of the age of the Vikings. Wont see one of these over priced fancy things hanging on my belt. But you will see a real Tomahawk.

Sometimes weapon demo videos crack me up. They find the most undateable nerds to show off products. A laser on a tomahawk is beyond stupid and no one is parkouring over boxes and doing front flips while throwing one lol. In an actual fight that guy would come in so over confident from all the hours of practice in his mom's back yard and get leveled immediately.

Try Rmj Shrike, Talon or Ragnaok for tactical or Logger head, Jenny wren or Raven for outdoors camping etc. Rmj Tomahawks are best if you are regular and hardcore user of Tomahawk. Also Try Tops Hammer hawk or Cold Steel Rifleman hawk. Rest are gimmicks, tho they can chop a bit but not upto the mark of RMJ tactical which preferred choice of military. Gerber is not trustable after bear Grylls scam. Spyderco Sog etc are too flimsy and zombie tools too impractical. ☝️😎

A pistol chambered in 10 mm or 44 magnum might work. For lions in times past, there was a special spear with a long iron blade used by the hunter who pulled up in front of a charging lion in hopes of impaling charging animal. It was braced at a low angle in the ground and jerked up to about the lion's lower neck to chest level.
May I suggest a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs. Shotguns are pretty affordable and quite flexible in uses. Some have interchangeable barrels.

Hogue is almost always out of stock, on all their products, tbh if you want good quality without breaking the bank go with cold steel, i have their budget model of the fixed blade recon tanto, and by budget i mean its sk-5 steel (chinese version of 1095) and itll chop through 4in thick black oak, just dont expect to have much of an edge left, but easy enough to resharpen, and unless youre getting san-mai, or cpm v3, you wont spend a forture on cold steel

, my SOG is still a great chopper after being downright abused as my regular thrower practice piece.
My RMJ is my regular camp/pack ax. The steel is top quality and it’s a one piece design…there’s not much to fail on it. Holds an edge great. Done a fair bit of bushcraft with it. A coworker had one thru deployment. I’d use it for a long term outdoor piece
There’s plenty of CZcams videos putting zombie tools thru the ringer. Again. One piece construction so I don’t know what’s going to fail.

    A tactical tomahawk in 2022?
It seems somewhat ludicrous, surely a compact hatchet and/or a Cold Steel type Shovel would more than exceed the wood processing, chopping and digging requirements and serve equally well as a means of self defence!
There's actual combat footage of trench warfare in The Great War (1914-1918, AKA The First World War) showing troops overrunning a trench and using their shovels as weapons, in the manner of a tomahawk.
These supposedly tactical tomahawks appear to be based on mountaineering ice axes.
Either of the two Cold Steel Shovels, the Special Forces or Spetznaz Trench Shovels would be formidable as self defence tools.
I think I'd prefer to carry my Gransfors Bruks Hatchet and Cold Steel Shovel rather than a questionable 'tactical' tomahawk.

    • @JohnLoogleman
      @JohnLoogleman Před 8 měsíci

That's actually really funny. I have both the gransfor bruks hatchet and cold steel spetznatz shovel, but have been in the market for a tomahawk. I may just heed your advice and stick with what I have. Then again I probably won't because I'm too addicted to this stuff...
