There is no question that Matteo is one of the absolute greats, and one of my all time favorites but what he plays is fusion when he plays electric and when he plays nylon string, it is a world finger picking style. He is really not doing anything new, or creating some never before heard sonic alien dimension however he doing it better than most because you can see the horizon standing on the shoulders of giants.
I am not trying to under value Matteo's indisputable level of world class mastery, just placing him in context and perspective, because as great as he is as a musician, perfect time, phrasing, cadence, harmonic reach, technique and certainly has a distinct and recognizable sound, he has not yet achieved the level of originality as an innovative pioneer like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Alan Holdsworth or Jimi Hendrix to name a few.
This is not to say he will not achieve that level because has already proven he has all the skills of a world class virtuoso arranger and composer, but has not yet reached his full potential as an original innovator. I am looking foreword to the day he composes orchestral masterpieces, hopefully absorbing Eastern, African and Asian motifs and sensibilities.
