  • Sometimes the hardest habits to break are the ones that have served us well. In order to move work forward, there's a bit of resistance involved; it can feel like boundaries, but there are ways to push through them. Here are 3 of my favorite ways.

    You are so brave to share how painting is not always a "fun and easy" thing to do. Sometimes it's really hard to slog through the ugly teenage phase. But worth it in the end. Even if just for the learning. Thanks again for your honestly!

    I resonate so much with what you said and did here. So far I have failed on all three points you raised, especially the tolerance of the unattractive outcome. This often keeps me from working altogether. It is very inspiring to watch you push through that stage and arrive at such a beautiful painting in the end. Thank you for this post!

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  Před rokem +1

      That has absolutely, hands down been the one that has kept me from growing for years. I will never probably always have to work on it-and pushing through it can sometimes details me for months, so I guess you and I are alike and normal 😆 I do think these are universal problems and it’s nice to know we can overcome them by just sticking with it. Thanks for watching!

    • @brigitteshantieaglemeare4350
      @brigitteshantieaglemeare4350 Před rokem +2

      @@marabethquinart yes it is relieving to see that an accomplish artist like yourself has struggled with the same problems like many of us. I have made a lot of art that I like a lot, but I have nearly always employed ways where art makes itself to a large extent, like printing with rust and with natural materials, so that I only need to put the pieces together, collage a bit and it's done. I know something is missing in my art development and I know that I am avoiding that challenge. It was great that you put such a fine point on the three main obstacles: the comfort zone, getting attached to certain bits too soon and the ugly stage. Plus the little voice that says I'm already 70, what's the point.

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  Před rokem +1

      @@brigitteshantieaglemeare4350 AND yes, that voice that says 'it's too late' or 'if you were going to accomplish that, it would have happened by now' or 'you're too old'. YES. All of these thoughts, I'm finding, are universal thoughts but there are so many examples of people that were just late bloomers or kept pursuing something and came into the fullness of it when everyone else they knew had retired. It's always worth pushing past this voice again and again, if for nothing else than seeing what's on the other side of it! Thanks for your beautiful comments.

Going from being controlled and semi realistic to abstract does my head in. I still can’t help making things that look like something specific. I love the journey though and the outcome is good but… it’s interesting what comes out of me so I suppose this is my artistic voice at the moment. The one question I have is how do you decide your colours do you decide to do any colours or do you have an idea for example of certain analogous colours and is that an anchor that you have . For me if I don’t at least have a colour palette, I tend to put everything and anything down and then it just doesn’t look good. What I notice in your work is that you have very good strong darks and lights which really make the painting interesting… any thoughts on colour will be appreciated. Thank you for your kind words! Always appreciated and I’m happy you’re enjoying the channel-thanks for watching. I have a lot to learn about color and I’ve mostly chosen color intuitively (not that that means it’s good choices, but just that I did it by feel) but recently I’ve really been trying to be more intentional about it. Sometimes I try to use a limited palette as an exercise in limitation. Sometimes I choose some beforehand and try to stick within the ‘families’ of each of them, it really depends on how I’m feeling that day or what I’m trying to achieve. And I think its wonderful that you realize that allowing yourself to just choose as you go doesn’t get you the result you want-it’s those realizations that I think are really instrumental in growing your artistry!

      Please don’t apologize. It’s challenging to make videos that are engaging to everyone, and I understand. This particular video would not let me turn on closed captioning and it also happens to be one that I did early on and since then have turned down the music overall. I’m learning! 😊
