  • The Vatadage Quadrangle in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka.
Buddhist monks are walking around in the rain at the Quadrangle in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka.
The monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city were created by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of the capital city of Anuradhapura in the year 993 AD.
In the center of the Quadrangle is the Vatadage. The Vatadage is a round shaped relic house that is typical for its type. The outer terrace is 18 meters in width and has 4 entrances that are all flanked by huge guard stones that are beautiful and in great condition.
