Phagwah, also known as the Festival of Colors or Holi, is an annual Hindu celebration that marks the arrival of spring with bright colors and festivals. Guyanese citizens get together every year to celebrate Phagwah.
Holi is a significant Hindu festival that is celebrated as the Festival of Colors. They are also celebrating the arrival of Spring and love. It celebrates the eternal and divine love of the pagan deities Krishna and his wife Radha. The holiday also signifies the triumph of good over evil, as it commemorates the victory of Vishnu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu.
Phagwa, is celebrated around the world. Holi / Phagwah holds a special place in the hearts of the Caribbean people. The festival lasts a night and a day. It coincides with the full moon (Purnima in the Hindu calendar). There are both religious and social aspects to this festival.
Indo-Guyanese are the largest ethnic group in the Guyana. Indentured servants from India first arrived in Guyana in 1838.
Indians represent two-fifths of the population of the country of Guyana. Their ancestors arrived mostly as indentured laborers from India. The Indians were sent over sea by the British to replace Africans in sugar plantation work.
Interestingly, Guyana considers themselves to be a Caribbean country, even though they are not an island nation that is located in the Caribbean Sea.
