No least favorites doesn't automatically equal a 10. You can have a great album with no bad tracks, but it not be super boundary pushing or inventive.

Generally his fanbase demands mainstream pop and rap most of the time. Logically speaking, this is his job, and not everyone enjoys metal. In facts, I'd say the vast majority of his subscriber base doesn't know who a Portal or a Horrendous or even a Sunn is. But it's obvious that his, say, Jaden Smith reviews or Drake reviews or Kendrick Lamar reviews--or even classic albums, for that matter--get hundreds of thousands of views, whereas metal reviews range 40k to 120k at the absolute most, unless it's King Gizzard with an already established record.
Bottom line, he talks about metal he chooses to due to demand. Just like how he puts a lot of underground stuff in YUNoReview. :)

Not just an 8, LIGHT 8. That's closer to a 7. He just considers all the songs as great, just not groundbreaking or revolutionary or something. Plus for a drone album, it really is short.

I'm always interested to know how CZcamsrs got their name. So tell us Melon, how did you come up with the name Anthony Fantano?
At this stage SunnO))) have proven they can do a movie soundtrack. The production and mixing on Life Metal and Pyroclasts has really got me wanting these guys doing a movie score.
Edit: That being said I also think this a criminally underrated album because features the most immersive, meditative and gigantic guitar drones the duo has ever put on tape. It's some of their best work without question.
Sunn O))) should have scored the new Dune movie.

"Frost" came up for me when I listened to the New Music Mix on Apple Music and I was very intrigued. At first I thought the song just had a really long intro seeing it was 10 minutes long consisting of noise. When the 5 minute mark passed I realized this was the song itself and I immediately added the rest of the album to my playlist and listened to it in full. While I couldn't pick out the intricacies you mentioned, I plan to listen to Pyroclasts again as well as discover their other material. I've very much gotten into noise music lately starting with the Daughters album, so it was nice to discover other artists that produce these types of musical landscapes.

Pyroclasts is wonderful, an awesome concept that confirms itself through the results. On par with Life Metal for me cause I saw Sunn O))) play live and most of it was modified versions of Life Metal tracks, and it was 2 hours of absolute battering heaven.

"Clean Hands Go Foul" the last Khanate album was improv as well, and Alan Dubin just wrote the vocals in afterwards...as hard as it is to pick a favorite Khanate album, the last one definitely stands out for it's "interesting writing"
Love that record! It does sound really alive like the music itself is falling apart which really brings the desperation and melancholy up a few notches, specially with Alan screaming like an insane person on top of it.

IMO is the sunn album that most reminds me of the roots of drone doom (Earth's "2 Special Low Frequency")
Had a chance to be on both of their Unsound performances - both 10y ago, and now - and to listen to this pieces. Cathartic expeirence. Couldn't be happier with the purchase

Yeah...because drone is a genre where variety exists.
The ‘wind’ sound is just signal noise from a wah pedal through a distorted amp. That was my go to moody intro sound for my band.

That's what drone metal is lol. It's meant for the atmospheric experience more than anything. Some of these bands even make music to meditate to.
If you want to get into it, I'd give a listen to Pallbearer: Foundations of Burden, or Bell Witch: Mirror Reaper. Guitar drone can be an emotional, cathartic experience, and it's easier to pick up on that with doom metal. It's not accessible, but it can be great.
