    The Anglo-Saxons were a Germanic people originating from Northern Europe who migrated to Britain in the early 5th Century AD. Anglo-Saxon land became places of almost constant warfare due to a number of reasons. In this video I will discuss their reasons for going to war, their weapons and armor, and their battlefield tactics. They were eventually conquered by another foreign force in the 11th Century and their reign in Britain came to an end.

      @@Roman-oh7xc Quite a curious statement considering the nuanced perspective that I usually encounter is one of pride over their achievements and acknowledgment of some rather nasty stuff.
      My favorite example is the transatlantic slave trade that Great Britain and Ireland played a central role in and subsequently broke up the business.
      Now the big question is what perspective are you referring to?

    I have a question, why did the kingdom has become the “anglo-norman” kingdom after the norman conquest, instead of “saxo-norman” or just simply norman kingdom?
    I mean, did only the saxon part of anglosaxons get wiped out from the island and the angle part remained, or just the angles and the saxons have become so indistinctive (or maybe they were already culturally indistinctive even before migrating from northern europe mainland) after centuries and they were one and the same, so this anglo-saxon name was just a name after all?
    Thanks

    • @user_____M
      @user_____M Před 3 lety +9

      Probably because the Nothern parts, traditionally held by Angles were still ruled by non-Normans in part, while the rest of England was owned by various Norman lords. In essence the ruling English elite isn't from Anglo-Saxons but from the Franks and Normans.

      Pretty much but this is generally common knowledge. 👍 The Monarchy is half German and half Greek or so we are told/taught... We've had French queens, and what have you in the past, but the English/Saxons themselves do not descend from the French.

    • @Anglisc1682
      @Anglisc1682 Před 2 lety +5

      Because Anglo (short for Anglo-Saxon) and English are synonymous with one another. Of course, the Anglo-Saxons didn't call themselves Anglo-Saxon, they called themselves English. And English is derived from Angle I guess. But Saxon, Angle, Jute or Frisian of Britain; they're all English

    • @Anglisc1682
      @Anglisc1682 Před 2 lety +2

      @علي ياسر I am just being blunt here but you are clearly ignorant on the matter of the English ethnonym, the Anglo-Saxons and their geographical distribution.
      The Angles and Jutes came from modern day Denmark, the Saxons and Frisians came from what is now Northwest Germany and the Netherlands.
      The term Anglo-Saxon refers ONLY to the various North-Sea Ingvaeonic tribes (Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Frisians) who settled in BRITAIN.
      The term Anglo-Saxon is synonymous with English; they are the same thing. I don't expect you to know this because you aren't one of us presumably, but it is still very basic knowledge.

    • @Anglisc1682
      @Anglisc1682 Před 2 lety +1

      @علي ياسر I think you are very confused lol. The Anglo-Saxons are restricted only to England, the English and their descendants. What I am talking about has NOTHING to do with the Holy Roman Empire

    It's actually not quite true to say that the Angles, Saxons and Jutes ended with the fall of Hastings. Remember that the original population still existed in the area around northern Germany.
    As you noted the original excursions were by Vikings proper, that is to say professional warriors. Much later they would port over the lower folks, if any. Many would prefer to remain in their north "german" motherland.
