Everything is carcinogenic, California tried banding so now they have stickers on literally everything including lumber coffee literally everything has a prop 65 warning. I just don’t think it was the welding fumes personally. Could’ve been some of the additives, though, when you weld with residue of things like chlorine that used to be in brake cleaner quite a bit and Freon when soldering brass piping, those causes a lot of issues. Even welding galvanize, which I highly doubt they did, or without PPE, would not lead to that most likely scenario was that he may be smoked cigarettes.

I'm a newer welder >3 years and I'll share my modest wisdom. I have met a lot of shop foreman that boast about how much money their company makes. Then I take a lap around the welding area. 40, 50, 60 year old welding machines. No extraction, high ceiling yes but active extraction. Mostly never. OSHA says that you must have a high ceiling in a weld area. Most of this stuff is metal particles. Its going to drop, the welding fume doesn't stop being a danger when the arc stops.I personally do not weld unless I have two of three types of extraction. Mechanical by means of a fan blowing or sucking the fume away from your head. Passive/natural, an open freight door. Now before I get someone butt hurt. When tig welding you can always put a piece of cardboard up as a wind break as tig doesn't cause spatter. Lastly personal protection. I wear a half mask with P100 filters in them I change out every week, if its needed or not. PAPR helmets are great, expensive but its the closest thing to 0 exposure. The next best thing is not welding. It blows a stream of purified filtered air out so all your breathing is clean filtered air, instead of the alternative.**For the US with BWC insurance you have health and safety programs and "bonuses" you can receive for preventative things. If you give your employees a respirator or PAPR, its going to discount your policies premiums **Back on track now. Use a mask when your grinding, not just a face shield as it kicks up and under. Its worth the prevention. You don't want to be dealing with WC when your sick. Its an expensive set up to start, but when you think of the alternative its very cheap. We have a shorter life expectancy based off the welders conditions during the 60's-90's when fume control wasn't as readily available. Now I'd like to see the numbers.

As a kid who was raised around truckers and welders, I can confirm that there was no such vented hoods inside of shops, but was at least lucky because we couldn’t afford to shop so worked outdoors, and had some natural ventilation. One of the best things that’s old-timers can do With our spare time is to craft safety equipment to donate to the kids starting out or perhaps mentor them. Or welding certificates should start with this safety training with the first projects, being how to well together your welding carts, indoor exhaust systems, et…. I never understood welders, who didn’t well together their own carts and systems, because “they didn’t have time”.

how far are large companies that galvanize steel have to be from neighborhoods or living complexes? also, are the clothes that the welder wears while working , is that also contaminated? if so, can he spread chemicals by not taking off his uniform and going to a public place ?? thanks !!

    • @BigWesLawns

jessica pedraza metal is dirty, all work around metal is dirty. clothes are blackened and ripped on sharp metal daily. we go home sore and tired and toss the clothes into the laundry. they dirty up the car and anything they contact being that the dirt is in dust and rust and particles. we hate welding galvanised and usually get sick from it. I was taught to drink a qt of milk before werk. a qt at lunch. and a qt after werk to prevent it from getting in. it seems to help.
      its a tough job.

Hi! Having a weld fume extraction solution in place is a preferable protection for you as a welder, since it will extract the hazardous fume and keep it away from you. If you want to know more, please contact a Nederman sales office close to you www.nederman.com/en/contact.

We´re sorry to hear that, hope you feel better now! It´s the outmost important that welders have the right protection equipment and are not exposed to hazardous welding smoke. Therefore a proper weld fume extraction solution is vital to safeguard the health and safety of the welder.
