- The rapids are in order we kayaked this 6/19/2020. We did not kayak all the way to the lower falls. I show in the video where we took out and where the trail comes back up to the road. Cow creek, Upper Smith, and Boundary Creek are all in this area. I thought Boundary Creek was fantastic I did not get to do cow creek.

The geology and bedrock seem to change as you get near the border. Very entertaining.
Thanks glad you liked it. Yeah I think you are right.
One of my favorite bump and squirt runs.
Nice I thought this run was good and would be even better with more water.
Crikey! You get around.
Stay safe brutha!
I try my best will do.
Hi, you should check out the Upper section of the Little Kanawha River. It is very technical and more difficult than the Upper Yough. Ask Kim Casto / Doug Ackerman from Fayetteville. They've been paddling since the 70's.
I have done that section of the little Kanawha near wildcat years ago. Would like to do it again sometime. I remember it being really good.
@@JohnMoorekayak Please make a video. And take younger generation Corey Lilly and buds with you. Thanks for the reply.
If you know Kim Casto / Doug Ackerman check with them. Also ask Doug about the bubble on left of Middle Keeney (?) New R. Like being in an old Coke bottle.
@@mitchaelcasto8786 I paddled with Kim years ago when I started and still see him and Doug out on the New and Gauley.
Couple other notes for your journal. Thanks for noting levels, too. This trip was probably the lowest I’ve run it and it cleans up with a little more water.
River can have a strong (couple hundred cfs during daylight) diurnal cycle. 10pm is high point, 2pm is low point.
Dam draws 0-400 cfs depending on operational goals. Usually it will draw 400 during boating season.
This drainage is bigger than Boundary Creek, so while it’s not published, the gauge above the dam on snowmelt would always have more cfs than boundary. I want 250-350 for lower smith creek. It’s been paddled from 100-500 I believe. This is not even perfect, but if Boundary gauge is reading 500-900, Lower Smith might be “in”.
A note on the mid-run takeout trail. If a shorter run is desired, this takeout gives you nearly all the best rapids. Below where the video stops are a few more great rapids, then a landslide adds a lot of smaller boulders and the run character changes. It stays pretty steep, but the riverbed is less channelized. Near the very bottom of the run, 3 miles further than the video and about 200 meters above where the water returns from the powerhouse, are a series of big drops. Scout/portage on right all the way to bottom and county road. This area is marked no trespassing, probably due to the large fall seen from road being an attractive nuisance. Best to not park near creek, best is a few hundred meters south, and to move quickly, quietly, and respectfully through the area.
Thanks Fremont good to know
@@JohnMoorekayak I hit send too early. Added a few more notes. We had a low snowpack this year. Glad you made it last year.
That creek is just one long rapid
Yeah it is pretty continuous. When I make my videos I do edit out a lot of the flat water sections. We did boundary creek in that same area. It truly was completely continuous for 7.5 miles. I thought it was one of the best runs I have ever done. The video for it is like 35 minutes because there were so many rapids.
@@JohnMoorekayak Very cool. I’ll check that one out. Really digging your videos
@@FullPsycho thanks.
