    Maybe the earlier ones were noisier.

    • @tonyscalora6808
      @tonyscalora6808 Před 4 lety +5

      Same. I think it was a criticism that people without actual experience using one started parroting on gear forums. If you boost frequencies or up the gain on it, it's going to bring the noise floor up just like literally any other preamp/overdrive/boost pedal in existence. I own two stock GE-7s, and one Analogman modded one and they're all great. Analogman is a little less noisy but nothing noticeable enough in live or rehearsal environments imo. I'm perfectly happy using a stock Boss GE-7 just like Tom is in this rig rundown. Such an underrated little gem of the guitar world.

    • @DaveMarket
      @DaveMarket Před 4 lety +4

      I have had mine since they came out. Definitely noisy, I installed a Monty Allums hi-fi upgrade and that made a big difference, great pedal.

    • @allstopblue5717
      @allstopblue5717 Před 4 lety +2

      Yeah, I bought a used one on Reverb, already modded. No hiss. However one of the included mods was a brighter LED? Or something to do with the LED. Seems like that mod didn’t hold up as the light sporadically cuts on and off which is aggravating when utilizing minor settings in a studio situation. the company who did the various mods is alchemy audio, so maybe they aren’t the most reputable? I have no idea. But the pedal certainly sounds great and I use it far more than any other pedal. Not even close really.

    • @nmnjs
      @nmnjs Před 4 lety +3

      Noise is present only when boosting. The more you boost, without cutting any frequencies, the more apparent hiss is going to be. Boss made changes to the parts at some point after 2010, so the newer ones are indeed less noisy.

    Listen to this man, he knows what he's talking about. If you have a few well cascaded gain stages in your amplifier, get yourself a programmable 31 band graphic eq with a save function and midi floor pedal. Create any guitar amp combination sounds you want, and save them. Its the most versatile rig you can have.

    I have a Boss GE7, but it is a new one. The early version I had was a little noisy, depending on what you was using before it in the chain. My new one is virtually noiseless. Of all the effects and pedals i own I have to say this is the most important one. Just adds to something to your tone no matter what style you play. Just my opinion

    • @innocentoctave
      @innocentoctave Před 4 lety +7

      Just Google 'Boss GE-7 mod' and you'll find several alternatives. They usually involve changing key capacitors and chips for higher-spec items to lower the noise floor and improve clarity. The AnalogMan mod allows you to run the pedal at 18 volts for more headroom. The explanation for the changes is quite involved, and varies from modder to modder, which I assume is why Tom didn't elaborate.
      (Alternatively, consider using a different, more modern design of EQ pedal.)

    Hey PG, does he use the Boss EQ as a boost BEFORE or AFTER overdrives? Or is he just boosting the front end of a already crunchy amp? This info would be really helpful. It's not mentioned in the video.

    • @jaketabor7776
      @jaketabor7776 Před 4 lety +5

      Looks and sounds to be after his drives. Drive pedals will already color the sound slightly, seems like logically it would be post OD for that reason. Yes, he has a little gain on his amp already. He mentions that in the full video.
