- BEOWULF - FULL AudioBook - Old English Folklore & Mythology - Heroic Epic Poem - Beowulf is the traditional title of an Old English heroic epic poem consisting of 3182 alliterative long lines, set in Scandinavia, commonly cited as one of the most important works of Anglo-Saxon literature.
It survives in a single manuscript known as the Nowell Codex. Its composition by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet[a] is dated between the 8th and the early 11th century. In 1731, the manuscript was badly damaged by a fire that swept through a building housing a collection of Medieval manuscripts assembled by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton. The poem fell into obscurity for decades, and its existence did not become widely known again until it was printed in 1815 in an edition prepared by the Icelandic-Danish scholar Grímur Jónsson Thorkelin.
In the poem, Beowulf, a hero of the Geats in Scandinavia, comes to the help of Hroðgar, the king of the Danes, whose mead hall (in Heorot) has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel's mother attacks the hall and is then also defeated. Victorious, Beowulf goes home to Geatland in Sweden and later becomes king of the Geats. After a period of fifty years has passed, Beowulf defeats a dragon, but is fatally wounded in the battle. After his death, his attendants bury him in a tumulus, a burial mound, in Geatland. Hey, unlike everyone I want to say thanks.
Sure there are always going to be problems with readers, but I mean this is free and is still well done and you can deal with it. Thanks for the upload anyway. Many of the readers were good and made it easy to hear by clarity of voice and good recordings. Thank you!
POV: you are listening to this to finish your summer reading.
Listening to understand the history of human mythology, and thereby uncover a part of our shared human nature.
Yep
THIS BOOK TESTS MY ENGLISH SO HARD 😭 i tried to read the one our teacher assigned us and i nearly stroked- thanks for posting this version, i can understand it better than the original anglo saxon case haha
So you guys are disappointed by a free audiobook??? If it's really an issue go buy one? This is literally perfect for a me a lazy teen in high school, props to the reader
@@Davidpostingshid - Perhaps, that is not to say in agreement yet in want of literate noblemen willing to do the job.
Perhaps this shieldmaiden is not only worthy instead perfectly suited to assist the education of hords of young minds in
great joy of epic quest.
She is actually putting theatrics in her speech! Makes it easier to listen to
"I'll take any class, as long as they don't make me read Beowulf."Woody Allen.
thank you for putting this up, its one of my favorite books and now can listen to it on the way to college :)
Thank you for sharing!
This is one of my favorite poems.
I prefer this reader's enunciation over other readers I've found. She reads a bit more slowly than some other readers but, given how smooth my brain is and how complicated the wording in this story is, it works out really well for me.
Thank you for this!
Will definitely use this to teach Beowulf. Thank you
Dude the way that I’ve listened to this/read it several times and still cannot comprehend enough to write my paper for history class 🥲💀
If you don't like how she reads it, why not read it yourself.
And Beowulf said all the heros are dead
@@adirondackbladesmith1895- Site your quote unless you make quotes and attribute them in error.
Gladly... jk
Gladly one problem i can’t find it
@@johnathanb2114 Spell "cite".
Stephen Fry needs to be reading this.
This is going to be so hard to listen to for 3 hours..
The things I do for school. Ugh.

This is like a foreign language
It's called old english for a reason
@@sydneypinyerd8438 This isn't old English. It's been translated to early modern English.
@@miguellorenzosingian1562 It originated from old English and was translated to early modern English which is why it doesn't make much sense
@@sydneypinyerd8438 What? I don't follow your logic. It was translated so that modern English speakers could understand it. It's just a difficult piece, but not because of the version of English it uses.
I think the rarity to full compete sentences is such a unusual find a to be almost foreign.
While an old wizard style voice would be interesting, there isn't a problem with her being a woman. Cate Blanchett did a pretty great job introducing The Lord of the Rings.
TL;DR Beowulf is a badass

She pronounces Schild Schiefing wrong. It's SH, not SK.
Who gives a fucking fuck?
It’s not a woman thing the point is always the fact Beowulf is a manly character, I see too many women getting mad but they don’t understand they can disrespect someone culture forgetting Beowulf is a story and not really a book
Hi Jill ee ack. It isn't that hard to pronounce. It isn't Higlack.
You know Anglo Saxon?
This should be taken down for depreciating the value of this great work.
and nice try to add 50000 subscribes people make other accounts
How is this my homework?????????????????????
A more apt title for this video would read, "How to ruin a classic."
It is free to attempt a better contribution.
Why do so many people here brag about the reader? If you don't like her having a female voice, go read the story yourselves or listen to another reader!
This reader has no sense of rhythm or gravitas or dramatic voice. She is just reading to read, much like a teen might in English class. Does not draw me in at all. Very sad.
The other guy from Libervox reading this same work is worse.
Sorry, but I really can't listen to this. Beowulf read by an American woman? No.
Please, somebody, do another audio book that can be enjoyed properly.
+Science Viking Yeah, +1
American, Irish, Scottish, Australian and Northern English accents are closer to what Old English sounded like.
How about you read it yourself, ungrateful lazy ass.
I understand it's volunteers, but seriously; she shouldn't have bothered
Ed Ram .... Do you even know what an accent is?
A women should not be reading this
Why not?.... It's a story, anyone has the right to read it if they want. If you don't like her rendition then move on.
Bobby Two Shades For a story like Beowulf, a voice like this fails to capture the feel of a Nordic hero’s tale. Not to mention her narrating is bland and monotonous. Also, a rebuttal for your second statement: I have freedom of speech and can give my opinion no matter how unpopular or unfair it seems to you.
The Wanderer and obviously gets more than you.
