Wow. Just being near her must have been such a thrill. I was only 10 years old when she died. Mae is laid to rest near my parents at Cypress Hills cemetery. I've paid my respects to her once or twice.
The Director of the film didn't do her any favors. He should have used the same cinematographer and lighting crew that was used on this test. What he delivered in the film has nothing to do with this magnificent test.
These clips make you wonder how the the final decisions were made. She looks much better in these tests with the shorter hair. She also made a point of being filmed walking in and out of scenes in Sextette (and as she does in the tests) because there were rumors that she had to have assistance walking and had to be propped up and she knew about those rumors, so she made sure she was filmed walking in and out of every scene.
See, I thought I was the only one that noticed! She doesn’t appear to have aged anywhere! If they took the color out of the film, it would look like it was shot in 1930’s! And they didn’t have the cosmetic surgery back then like we got today!
WOWEE - Was she really 86 here? She looks wonderful - and this was back in the days when facelifts were not so great. She must have been blessed with fantastic genes. Also so hasn't made the mistake some women do of remaining too thin - past 50 it can be very ageing and a bit of meat on your bones is youthful. Inspirational to know a lady can maintain her glamour and sex appeal 'til the day she dies - if she is lucky enough to have good health, and she really wants to! God bless Mae West a lady with a lot of class, wit and star quality.
Facelifts were great in the 70s because people could not depend on Botox and filler so much which can look wonky when not done by a master. Yes Mae looks younger with shorter hair. Dolly Parton would do good to rock her late 70s platinum bouffants which truly made her a bombshell. Don’t get me wrong she keeps getting better but sometimes her wig stylist looks as if she puts a stick of dynamite in it and says “DONE!”
I agree with what others are saying. The short hair looks so much better than the long wig she wears in the film. From what I've read, she had complete control over her appearance. I'm guessing that she liked the long hair better. This is so much more attractive and less "drag queen". She would never let herself be anything other than "Mae West". It would be interesting if she had let the old persona go and simply be an actress.
Thanks for sharing. I have no idea how advanced cosmetic surgery was in Mae's time or if she had any procedures but her neck/jawline/chest is flawless. Even today with the variety of procedures most older actresses still cannot erase the age from the skin in those areas. Mae's skin looks taut and smooth. The short hair looks great too.
i Love Love!! that in 1:07 we get a glimpse at the real Mea West then she immediately goes back to the Mea West. So ahead of her time ! BTW i do agree her shorter hair is MUCH better and gives her more of a natural look.
She’s moving more here than she did in the whole film. So loose the big wigs and the long gowns corseted up to the eyeballs. In the finished feature they made her look almost completely solid from the neck down. There’s life and expression in the first half of these costume and makeup tests.
I think she moved a lot in the Film !! And at 85 or 86 years of age she moved and walked in those gowns and heels better than most woman at 65 !!! She still had that sexy walk in the gym scene when she sang "happy birthday 21" !!
If they lost that horrible long platinum wig they eventually put her in for both Myra Breckenridge and Sextette, and kept her hair shorter and matched her with handsome leading men who were closer to her age, she would have been spared some of the negative reviews she got for both films. She was still both classy and attractive.....She just wasn't 30 anymore . So what?
I think the makeup also was bad. Those eyelashes were too long and we could’t see her eyes as much… the eye makeup made her eyes look smaller. I think she copule have longer hair but in a different style.
