To be fair it seemed like it was more like it was more about how everybody was having so much fun without him and feeling displaced. So not nessacerily romantic threat, but more being upset at feeling alienated from the group and this outsider (Ryan) almost taking his place. At least to me.
plotwist, troy is jealous of ryan cause he saw him and chad switch clothes and realized they were dating and now not only did he steal his best friend, but also his girlfriend, and plus he's the brother of his enemy, sharpay LOL. I can see why troy would be a bit annoyed of him :') but it's okay, ryan can be his brother in law, like they said.

The thing about Troy and Chad is that Troy isn't talking to his friend. Poor communication. Troy isn't saying "hey, this is an opportunity for a scholarship and a better future. Please be patient with me as you probably won't see me for a while as I do this". He just dipped one day for the "Richer and Brighter" people and Chad is rightfully bitter. Just leaving his friends to be like, "does he not like us anymore now that he has seen better or is this just Sharpey's plan?".
Honestly specially if I was in the same situation as Chad and my white friend started to treat me as a servant and not as the childhood best friend I've always been to him as soon as he gets some power, I'd treat him wayyyy more poorly than Chad did.
Troys friends were AWFUL to him. This was a great opportunity for his future and they were on his ass about it the whole time! Who wouldn’t take the opportunities he was afforded? God forbid Troy think about his future. And he didn’t treat Chad like a servant. Chad was a waiter. It’s his job to fix the order if it wasn’t right. Stop making it a racial issue. You sound like a moron.
It also makes the entire movie 10x funnier when you imagine Troy getting mad that Gabriela's hanging out with a dude who's undeniably gay as all get out.

I mean even if they didn't intend to make Kelsey a lesbian the way they wanted Ryan to be gay, they had foreshadowed something between Kelsey and Jason at the end of the first movie which ended up going nowhere. Kelsey is absolutely Ryan's beard though.

I came across an article where the guy who plays Ryan was asked about the subtext with him and Chad and he was like 'yeah I guess I see how people could have read it that way, maybe the director was making a very aware choice when he had us switch clothes' and then he just dropped the bomb of 'I thought it was funny people thought Ryan and Chad had chemistry because Ryan has a crush on Zeke', and apparently they just cut a lot of the lingering looks out and stuff. It was a whirlwind. I still prefer to believe Ryan and Chad were the real background romance.

It’s not his acting. It’s the directing. In the behind the scenes videos of HSM2, you can see Kenny Ortega demanding more camp from Troy. And honestly? I think that’s great. I just love how camp, how extra that movie is. Also the princess tiki song wasn’t in the released version, it was deleted (like Felton’s middle life crisis). They added the scenes on Disney+.
They were also included in the DVD release! (Well, my copy says "Extended Edition", but I'm not sure if they're like that everywhere, as it was a release for Germany.)
@@LetsKei I have the extended edition for DVD too! I bought mine in Spain so the edition made it to other countries as well. If I remember correctly there's even a karaoke feature to sing along :D

omg the campiness is what's so cool about hsm2 and hsm3!!! Ryan, Sharpay and Troy are so camp and i love it. Troy's extraness is what makes his solo song so fun :) but i get why they'd find it odd since they didn't watch it as a kid, therefore aren't used to it. I never even thought it was over the top cause im used to it and plus, it's a musical, so i expect dramatic facial expressions.
“Ducky!! How’s my dashing boy?! :D” is some of the cutest parent dialogue to ever come out of a movie, forget Disney, any movie made

Idk if y’all have ever seen The Greatest Showman but Zack Efron has progressed SO much with his vocals since High School Musical. It’s definitely worth to check out, plus it’s an incredible movie in general.

The opening shot has to have a higher budget than the entire 1st movie lol. The 2nd one has always been my favorite, but some of the songs in the 3rd one go absolutely crazy.

As an American, getting up at 6 am for high school was a very real thing. Mine started at 7:50 in the morning, so I needed to get up at least an hour earlier if I wanted to shower, eat, and walk my dog; and I didn’t even have extra curriculars.
Seconded! My school even had a few "zero-hour" classes that started at 7, and regular school started at quarter to eight. But if you wanted a parking spot, you had to be there by 7:15.

In the UK most schools start between 8:30 and 9, I think Australia and New Zealand follow our model. We generally didn't have extra-curriculars before school, but either during our lunch break (which was an hour long) or after school.

I cannnnootttt wait for HSM 3. literally the best. More budget in the costuming, the musical composition, the scenery, the camera quality, just everything! Love love love it. HSM 2 is my 2nd fave.

Corbin and Monique are wonderful, awesome actors and people and I'm happy for them, but Taylor and Chad had the opposite of chemistry and couldn't achieve a lick of it in all three films, whereas Ryan and Chad got it together in one song.

I still to this day think that Ryan and Chad had more chemistry together in that one song, than any of the other couples had in all 3 of the movies and as a part of the LGBTQ+ I love it so much.
That aside, HSM2 is probably the HSM movie that I watched the most out of all of them. I just remember being at my brother's house and him putting it on for me while I watched the cats and dog while he was out with his girlfriend. Very fond memories basically. Can't wait to see the two of you react to the last movie. It's not my favorite for sure, but I think that it's pretty solid.

I believe Troy's poor singing in the Sharpay version of You Are The Music In Me was deliberate. It was to show a) that Troy felt awkward and uncomfortable with the situation and didn't know what was going on, b) that it was a musical genre Troy wasn't used to singing (he'd mainly sung showtunes up until that point, this was a more pop-rock version of the song and he didn't know what to do with that), and c) that there was a lack of musical (and just general) compatibility between him and Sharpay. That's my interpretation, anyway.

Yo how happy I got to see this upload! Also I think one of my favourite little details in this movie is whenever Sharpay and Ryan’s dad talks to him, he straightens Ryan’s hat. Just a little detail like that to show a little conflict regarding how Ryan is obviously gay but his dad disagrees, makes sense how he’s a mama’s boy. They didn’t need to do that but it’s appreciated as a piece of subtle character for best boy Ryan.

the song isn't actually as racist as you think, she's speaking actual hawaiian (she's saying the very long name of what in english is called the triggerfish. the song is based on a real hawaiian fairytale, i think). and because of her character and the things she does that the show doesn't support morally, you could argue that it's a rich, ignorant girl singing a wild summer vacation song.
For real, It would make sense that someone like Sharpai would sing something like that.

It's also supposed to be the cringiest thing imagineable on purpose. Also a pretty good metaphor for America's overcommercialization of Hawaii and Her natives, which was tackled before in Lilo and Stitch.
Bet On It is probably the most timeless bops ever from this series, Zac killed that and showed that it doesn’t matter how “good” you are, just dance and sing your heart out boo and we are all there with you !!
That ⚾ musical number has more chemistry between the characters than any other romantic scene in any of the three movies and you can't convince me otherwise 😂. I LOVE IT ❤️❤️❤️ this is my favourite movie out of the trilogy. Summer, fun, great songs.

Kenny Ortega let Lucas Grabeel (Ryan) do whatever he wanted in the graduation scene in HSM3 and he went to give Zeke a big smooch, since everyone knew he was gay-coded, and it was left in the bloopers instead of final cut
The little details of HSM always get me. The evolution of Sharpay's locker, Chad's t-shirts, Kelsey's entire character... Gotta love it. I saw the third one in theatres and honestly, no shame, it was one of the best movie-going experiences ever. Super hype!

my thought was that it was something he got into after he moved to Albuquerque (he was a world champion player for little league in Rhode Island, he mentioned it in this movie) and Sharpay helped him with his lines because he's dyslexic (he had trouble reading in the first movie) and then she took over

To clear something up. College is most expensive for middle class families. Lower income families can get the majority of the uni paid for in Federal and state grants, need based scholarships, and work study. Many of these programs middle class students don't qualify for because their parents make too much. Yet they don't make enough to outright pay 17k for public un tuition plus 12k in room and board. (Accommodation) Basically middle class families have to save for their children college from birth OR the kids have to get merit scholarships. So Troy's dad is a coach for a high school, unless his mom makes bank Troy is probably middle class.
Upper middle class. But yea, he will need merit scholarships and money saved or most likely he will have to take out student loans that have ridiculous interest.

I would argue scholarships & grants are not as easy to get as they seem, and often 1st generation college kids arent aware of them or even how to apply. Those grants are limited. Then, you have to fall into a very specific bracket & any assets (that aren't actively earning you money) can be seen as a reason you DONT get certain awards.
Also work study is great, but its WORK, and you have less time to study and/or sleep in college than a non-working kid. Bottom line, college in America is ludicrously expensive for everyone (esp with rising interest rates & lack of student loan forgiveness) but it is more deeply felt by the working poor and lower middle class.

one of the things that i think they kinda missed abt sharpay is that she’s not trying to win his affection, she’s assuming she’s already got him so she’s not trying to flirt or anything, she skipped straight to acting like his girlfriend
This is my favourite one even if the third one is technically better. Also re: the All For One sequence, I took that as kind of the "curtain call" portion of a musical. It was definitely unnecessary, but given how this is maybe the most theatrical and camp of all three movies I appreciate its role in the performance.
In my school, it was the song chosen for students to perform on mid-term/year end events. All For One and What Time Is It are really good when you're with your friends having fun.

Yeah same here. I had to be at my bus stop by 7:21 or they would keep going. Also they would give me Math as the first class like don’t expect me to do well. Lol.

With the ending, I think it is important to know the context. The audience is kids /preteens mushy endings don't have big impacts as much as happy fun endings. It was also released close to summer break for schools. I remember the ending song was played so much in school and on TV to bring about the summer.

Taylor actually wasn't wrong at all. She was the first person to recognize what Sharpay was doing and was the first one that realized that Troy was changing and the things she told Gabriella would happen happened so I don't think she is a bad friend for telling Gabriella everything she noticed.
Gabriella also didn’t seem to ever get angry at Troy with the given miscommunication. She knew it was Sharpay and Troy was just obliviously and stupidly stringing along?

Everyone enjoys the second movie more, the most iconic songs and moments are from the second one. Also the baseball scene when they switch clothes, surprised Disney didn’t notice 😭

People have fake marriages for years and even have kids and I come from a background with arranged marriages, so yea people definitely can be in fake relationships for years and have made up breakups that make the headlines but that doesn't mean that's what happened here, they could very well have been true couples but I don't believe it tbh but it's just my opinion.

It was subtle for me when I was little. I just thought Chad hates dancing. I was ok, you don't have to. Then I was adult, I got it, and was, "huh, how about that? And people say there's no representation? Yeah right." It's there, just subtle and not blatant unlike now where it's very obvious and it hurts the movies story overall.
After I watched HSM1, I said that "Stick to the Status Quo" was the most thinly veiled "stay in the closet" song ever, and people told me I needed to see "I Don't Dance". They were right. :-)

In defence of “All For One” at the end, High School Musical 2 was aimed specifically at a young audience so they went for the big splashy musical number ending instead of the more intimate realism of the moment under the stars. I worked at an elementary school when it originally aired and the kids were OBSESSED with “All For One” and “We’re All In This Together”.

I remember a Suite Life of Zach and Cody episode where they auditioned to do a high school musical play. There was this running bit that Maddie would say she looked like Sharpay and everyone would be like, "nah, don't see it". Also the fact that Maddie was from a poor family.

42:06 re: them being foam bats, it's actually harder to dance with a light object cause they don't build as much momentum when you swing them around, and they're easier to drop (imo). dancing with actual baseball bats (or maybe just a wooden pole) would be easier AND between the timing of the dance and spacing of the dancers, there's next to no danger of getting hit
most baseball bats are metal and even if it’s wooden that would hurt soo much if you got hit, that it’s probably not worth the risk when filming like the cost if someone got injured idk. like one of the first things you learn when you play baseball is to make sure there is no one behind or around you when you are swinging even just warming up.
edit: also even if you just swung it wrong during the dance and like into yourself that would hurt, especially if it got your head

For anyone who didn't know, Ryan and Sharpay's tiki song was actually cut from the original version of the film. We first heard the song on the soundtrack and then they released an extended version with the whole musical number.

The tiki song was actually just a bonus exclusive for the DVD! It was never in the TV broadcasts but they seem to have included it in the streaming version for whatever reason. It's very much a joke song that's meant to be bad.

as someone who was a huge disney kid, its so funny to me rewatching this movie as an adult because back then i hated fulton and thought he was SUCH a hardass and just mean, but now i realize that a lot of the expectations he had and stuff he scolded the wildcats for are things that would be pretty standard for any service job lmao 😭 i feel bad for him now, like having to manage all these hs kids working their first jobs and having to answer to the whims of another kid so he could keep his job, thats rough buddy
Actually, if I remember correctly, the Hawaiian number was actually a deleted scene. As well as a bonus song on the album. It probably should have stayed that way, in my opinion. I still think I remember the songs from the first movie better, but can obviously see the improvements with these songs, they are still super memorable. Ryan is the hero in this one and I love it. Overall, this one seemed to freely build up great narrative and campiness. Even at 11 years old I could tell Chad and Ryan had more chemistry in “two” scenes than any of the official couples. Love your channel!
Yes, it was a deleted scene, I was gonna comment this too. I saw HSM2 a million times as a kid on Disney Channel and it was only when I purchased the movie on CZcams a few years ago that I saw that number for the first time. Horrifying.

The reason his friends were mad is bc he stopped trying to introduce them like he did in that first dinner. Once the basketball stars that could actually make a difference for their future careers showed up, Troy called Chad back to correct his sandwich when he could’ve introduced his best friend who literally lives for basketball to a really influential player. Like, maybe he can’t invite them to private practices and he definitely shouldn’t just turn down the opportunities to make them feel better, but he could at least help them network when they are literally standing right next to him and a pro player, like it takes two seconds. The fact that it didn’t even occur to him just screams wealthy white man privilege, especially given that two out of the 3 team members he brought with him are black...
to be fair, troy is somewhat at least self aware of hi place in the hierarchy, which is what he said to his dad in the beginning of them movie. He's aware he's in the working class and said he felt weird watching chad serve him. But his dad got into his head about taking opportunities, so i think that's why he stopped introducing them, cause he's cautious of his place in work and his dad even unintentionally told him to fend for himself in a way. Plus, Sharpay, who is in that level of class, told him that thing at dinner about not helping the work (aka chad), and I don't think Troy meant to, but i think that stuck to him a bit too. I think he knows he's just a kid and can't say too much, but also wants to take the opportunity. It's confusing for him. It's already a big deal for him to talk to these people and if it came off like he's trying to get a whole freaking team in on this, it'd be too much.

As someone who grew up in a relatively conservative Christian community, I can tell you that the teenage girls were scandalized and thought it was hilarious 😂
zac actually has a great voice, he sounds amazing in the greatest showman, im glad he did another musical after this, he also talked about how he couldnt really sing or dance he just thought it was a basketball movie lol
guys just remember these movies are targeted towards kids. We may see that end song as something unnecessary but kids see it as more fun with these characters they love and another song they can sing to and have fun with and learn the dances.

I always thought that "We're all in this together" and "All for one" were OBVIOUSLY not canon lmao. They're just outros that don't affect the story but give you the happy feelings you want to have for a kids/teen movie. You don't care about a cute kiss at that time, a big musical is way better! And yea it was all over the TV man. I personally really love that song, especially because I never felt like it needed to be part of the story.

This movie sticks out to me because after it came out that Zac and Vanessa were dating. It meant a lot to my young heart and I was surprised to see pictures of her straddling him on a beach 😂

Zac was at The Greatest Showman that was supposed to be his return to musicals and I have to say, he does a great job in it
I love Sharpay but this movie proved how little she understood about financial difficulties for a good chunk of people especially when aspiring to further education. The fact that she tried so hard to get people fired just so she could have Troy to herself for summer. Not once thinking "oh maybe they needed a job for a reason." But it does align with her character and the development she undergoes bit by bit throughout the franchise. This is dropped onto her heavily in her movie and it's really good from what I remember. Can't wait to see the reaction for that.
