- My ficus ginseng bonsai - if you want to call it an actual bonsai ;) - has grown quite a bit over winter. As this growth tends to be rather large, it was time to prune it back before growth season fully starts.
If you have any questions regarding this ficus ginseng bonsai, simply leave them in the comments!

very helpful. thanks
I'm happy that you liked it!
Hi can u post an update?
My bonsai wasn’t getting enough Sun and the branches began to extend upward in effort to get closer to the light. There is one branch that is just too long for my liking. It has foliage on the top of it and none on the lower portions of the branch. If I cut it back, will foliage regrow on it?
It depends on the exact species. If it is a ficus it will regrow leaves from quite old wood very easily. I have cut back branches on my ficus before and it has regrown from previously dormant nodes!
I have an identical tree as this one. Sadly I didn’t know I need to prune my Fructas bonsai. It’s leaves are all big now so should I cut every branch to the smallest leaves please. I love him and don’t want to hurt his growth as I got him as a present 4 years ago and never pruned before. Also should I re pot now? Many thanks I would very much appreciate your advice. SusieUK
Ficus can take hard pruning when the tree is in good health. So you can prune back to smaller leaves. Spring is a good time to repot. After 4 years it definitely makes sense to take a look at the roots. All the best to you and your tree!
Do they always make new shoots in bald wood? Mine is to springy and high but I'm scared to cut under the last leaves of the branch
If the tree is healthy in general you can cut below the first leaf and it should grow new shoots from lower points without a problem. Best do it at the start of growth season, so the tree can make a timely recovery
Mine has an umbrella look on top and i like the small shoots at the base so i leave them.
Great! Most important is that you enjoy the look of your tree 😊
This looks like one I purchased this past December. I’m a newbie and wondering why nearly all the leaves fell off over a few weeks time? It’s slowly growing new leaves.
Could be different reasons: a lack of light, a spot with a cold draft, cold damage when bringing it home, soil drying out too much, just to name some
@@ThatBonsaiGuy Thank you for the feedback. Now that I think back, it could have been all of the above mentioned. I’ll definitely be more aware of that information moving forward. Thanks again.
Do they grow in water
I don’t know much but when I bought the exact same bonsai plant as yours I didn’t see that one of the branch grafted didn’t have any leaves. I don’t know if it’s fine or not
You could scratch off a bit of the bark of that branch with your fingernail. If it is green underneath, there is a good chance it will grow leaves again.
When is the best time/season to prune ginseng ficus bonsai? And when is the best time to shape branches?
Thank you :)
If you keep it indoor you can basically prune whenever there is a need for it, but more conservatively early in the growth season and towards the end of the growth season are good times to prune. I usually wire branches by the end of cold season so over the next growth season thr branches can already settle into their new shape. :)
@@ThatBonsaiGuy thank you :)
Spring
I got one of these and it has awesome twirling roots that look like it’s dancing. I’m worried about one of them because it isn’t reaching the soil. Will that root die? I’m new to the hobby
Yes, if the root does not reach the soil it will dry up and die back to a point that is still supported by the other roots
@@ThatBonsaiGuy
Do you know if it can be saved by getting it into some soil or is it too late?
@@Kyle_Schaffif it has not dried up yet you can simply cover it with soil
How would you go about cutting one of those big roots off would that be possible?
Yes it is possible. I would leave a smal stump on the tree so that can safely dry out and not affect the rest of the tree
Please make a video about how to get aerial roots in Ficus
I talked about that topic in a previous video, feel free to check it out: czcams.com/video/zSQandxbWaY/video.html
What is best for ficus to plant in
I usually go for a mixture of bark, coco coir and clay pebbles. Ficus are quite hardy, so as long as the soil drains well a ficus should be happy in it
Do you use cut paste on the ficus?
No, I usually leave the wound as is and have not yet had any problems with infections.
My comment here just disappeared...anyway...will write it again...my little buddy is almost 4 years old,is strong enough and always green but I never pruned it. Has got long branches like yours and a bunch of leaves in the top...also a few little branches underneath. I lost an older one just because I tried to give it a shape and now I am afraid for the one I have. Will you promise that I will not lose my tree if I prune it? 😊thank you
If your tree is overall healthy, a prune should not harm it, but generally lead to healthier growth. Just look for information on how to prune and give it a go! 😄 My tip, start with a light prune to get a feeling for it first 😉
@@ThatBonsaiGuy ohhh...thank youuuu so much🙏if only I could save those leaves life! I will try with only one branch.. let's see how it will react😁😊
Can I prune mine if its not full?
I would not recommend pruning an already weak tree. If the tree simply has some bare spots but is generally strong and healthy, however, pruning back could help filling it in again.
How and when do I feed and water the bonsai
Water when the top layer of the soil is dry. Feed every two weeks during growth season, and every 4 weeks or even less in cold season.
Thank you
Can i prune it in 1st march?
If you keep it indoors it should not be a problem, as long as there is new growth you want to prune :)
I usually just cut the bottom leaves out. They will eventually turn yellow and fall off if you don't. 🪴
Yes, I also take off the lower leaves 😉
Thank you
Happy that you liked the video!

Do they grow in water
Yes they can be grown hydroponically
