The funniest part I think is how Reimu used to have so much sass/hellbent youkai extermination energy, while Sanae was a bit more on the "Uhh, yeah that sounds right, I'll go along with this line of reasoning/action!" , and it seems like they did a full 180 in this with Reimu taking on the more passive role and Sanae going full unhinged, swearing, sassy energy for this
I really love all of the new characters.
Chiyari in particular is my favorite. Absolute gremlin energy.
That and her being literal Brawl Meta-Knight tier is just hilarious. I'm 200% certain ZUN did not play test this game's characters.

Fun thing is; when you get to Zanmu's story; she says Yachie is intelligent; she's just been acting way out of character [Likely out of haste; since the other factions are moving too and it's a scramble for the "land"]

@@raikaria3090 I was moreso referring to the joke of people calling her out for constantly being outsmarted for the entire game. I do not doubt that Yachie can be intelligent, but she obviously didn't have time to think things out.
ZUN provided something of a height chart once after PCB... and Marisa was fairly short. the category right below it was short(with the likes of Remi Chen and Cirno)
just in case you didn't know, when the bar flashes yellow you should send an attack to the opponent to regenerate your shield(it's not based on time)
the traps laid by Zanmu seem to work like what Kasen did to Reimu near the end of the Ibarakasen manga, where the body is sleeping/in a coma(?) and the soul is in hell. Reimu didn't fall for a trap though so she was physically there...
it was in ZUN's emails or something like that... it's translated on the wiki.
Ran is fairly tall(under Sakuya, Yukari and Meiling and together with Reimu, Yuyuko, Letty and Alice)
someone(I'm pretty sure Sanae) comments on the tail pokes in the VS dialogue.
speaking of vs dialogue, there are a lot of cool vs interactions. one of the characters for example offered to reunite Saki with Miko. also Suika canonically has alcohol instead of blood, and Chiyari(and Hecatia)'s clothes are from a big brand in hell.
the beast matriarchs' ability(super beast spirits) is horrible. they're tanky and you can't exorcise them with aura(doing so makes things MORE difficult)
2:07:24 in my opinion this could've been translated better(like ms. and miss). in the Japanese, Aunn says 霊夢さんだー(roughly "it's ms. Reimuuu!", in romaji it's "reimu sandaaa). Reimu misunderstood the さんだー to be サンダー(pronounced the same but means "thunder"), so a direct translation would be "it's ms Reimuuu" "R-Reimu thunder?", but since it doesn't work obviously they localized it... and did it badly.
Tsukasa is basically a mercenary for both Yachie and Saki. she's also a signal(whatever that means, you'll see), but you'll have to see the ending for that
failgirl Yachie best Yachie, and she's a fail girl the entire game.
Enoko's ability is to manipulate traps. she's a mountain dog. she's hyped by Saki as being like Cerberus. She was cursed long ago due to eating Zanmu's flesh which is why she's immortal I think. she was introduced to Saki by Zanmu.
Son Biten is a monkey god/sarugami with the ability to control wild monkeys -beware Komeiji.- she ate a spirit in the sanctuary and became destined to fall to hell, but was saved, however in return she had to serve Yachie. Yachie then convinced her she's actually the reincarnation of Son Goku(as in, Sun Wukong). she also needs to somewhat play a character(like saying she was born from a stone), but she does seem to wholeheartedly believe she's Sun Wukong reincarnate. of course, Zanmu is responsible for the circumstances of Biten eating the spirits as well as for the meeting between Yachie and Biten.
Chiyari Tenkajin is a... tenkajin, who everyone thinks is a chupacabra for some reason, with the ability to manipulate blood and fire. she likes the hell of blood pool and was there even before Toutetsu. she lives by sucking blood, but prefers blood with more resentment like in former hell of blood pools -mosquitoes, learn.- BTW she already ate modern hell's leftovers of the blood pools. Zanmu(apparently an old acquaintance) told Chiyari about Toutetsu and they became instant friends. she decided to ally with Zanmu to get stronger resentment from the war. -also she's a monster in the game and her EX can break AI and humans alike-
Hisami's ability is to never let go. she either "idolizes one-sidedly" or "has a one sided crush on" Zanmu depending on the interpretation of a certain kanji. a masochist.
Zanmu's ability is to manipulate nothingness(might be a Buddhist concept that has to do with everything being one and dependency that goes both ways, or might be straight up nothingness). she was a corrupt monk "who distanced herself from all the ways of the world" in the sengoku(warring states) period(roughly 500 years after the 4 devas and the mountain). She felt a disconnect between the buddhist "don't kill" and the sengoku era's culture of boasting how many you've killed. she absorbed a bunch of spirits, stopped being human and was smart enough to venture to hell before falling to hell. she's a human-oni(人鬼) BTW and is intelligent and got a good reputation among oni. she was the one who suggested moving from former hell and making new hell. Zanmu doesn't want Gensokyo to be like the Sengoku era so she planned to seize all of Gensokyo and the animal factions as part of hell but Reimu exists so she decided she didn't need to.
She also sees Reimu as a lot like her in the past(as someone else put it, she's like Reimu but maxed incident resolving, like how Yorihime is Reimu but max shrine maiden).
fun fact regarding Zanmu, Reimu and Japanese: Zanmu(残無) is probably somewhat based on a person called Zanmu(残夢), with the first name having the kanji for nothing and the latter the kanji for dream instead(which is also the same kanji as the second kanji in Reimu(霊夢)'s name)
So maybe they could have said it like
“It’s miss Reimu!”
“Hey, I’ll have you know, I don’t miss!”
Or something like that?
That Aunn-thing reminds me of the same joke being used in Yu-gi-oh GX.
There is a patch on thcrap that replaces Reimu's, Marisa's and Suika's themes in story mode with the actual character's themes that are in the game. I recommend grabbing that if you don't want to hear the same 3 themes for 70% of the game. I don't really know what ZUN was thinking when he made the same few tracks play over and over again.
This game is pretty unbalanced but I love playing it. Also I swear this game has some of the best dialogue we have ever had. Not just for the lore but also how funny it is. I recommend reading through all the Versus dialogue on the thcrap page once you are done because there are A LOT of good lines there.
The music thing sounds like some sort of mistake tbh. That mix-up sounds like something zun would completely overlook assuming he already did it with all these routes.
@@yogsothoth915 It's not a mistake. He has to manually enter which music plays in every single fight. So he would have to make 19x4 mistakes without realizing a single time.
@@LushieTilde is that how it works? I just assumed, as an example, it ended at Zanmu's theme extra times because he had set to all stage 6s as the starting point, then he replaced it individually for example using Yuuma's or Saki's theme but forgetting Yachie's for stage 6.
I'm picturing an abuse of copy paste with the intention to making corrections later. Then possibly either forgetting or deciding its fine.
We might know better once the music room is properly translated but that's just kinda how I pictured potential laziness occurring.
Really hope we get a touhou 19X which fixes some of the balancing issues and adds some animal related characters who should've been in the game (flandre (Bat), Kagerou (wolf) and I don't know Toyohime (alligator)
Thank you for spreading knowledge on the music patch. The game is really fun but hearing the same three songs over and over again gets super annoying.

Reimu vs Yachie.
If Reimu wins she says:
"A flying tortoise? Aaa... what's this... My distant memories..."
Obviously this is a reference to Genji, but Genji is being refered to as a Distant Memory. Meaning he's either left the Hakurei Shrine completely for quite a long time now and Reimu hasn't seen him, or he's passed away due to his age. It's not clear which;l but what is very clear is Genji is no longer with Reimu at all.
@@raikaria3090 he did supposedly "retire in a pond behind the Hakurei Shrine". I guess that was ZUN's version of pets going to live on a farm.

Maybe Genji did go to a pond behind the Shrine, but then Reimu wouldn't consider him a distant memory. So he's either left since or his retirement has changed to a dirt nap.

I know I'm a little late, but the reason Enoko the mountain dog (yamainu) is a yokai is because the Japanese wolf (same animal) went extinct, so she's likely the last of her kind and lives on only because people think they no longer exist at all

Shou's officially become the Mima of the Windows era. Most of the rest of the Myouren Temple's cast is playable (except for Kogasa, Nue and Kyouko), Nazrin became playable before her, Orin became playable before her, the fact that
she's the only Windows-era Stage 5 Boss up until Seija to not be playable in anything official...
She has more of a chance than Mima, but it seems that ZUN isn't interested in exploring her character...
The more that I think about it, the more that I love Enoko. Like her design is cute and cool, and the fact that she is named a "Cerberus" by Saki just because of the bear-traps is funny.
I also find it interesting about Ran's whole background with the Animal Realm and Yuuma.
Streamer somethings to note before part 2 tmr. For some reason ZUN did not add the themes for Ran, Aunn, Nazrin and Seiran into the main story. If you want their songs in the music box you have to play with them in the vs mode. Maybe you can do a CPU vs CPU to unlock/listen to them.
There's also a patch on thcrap that adds them into story mode.

Fun fact: ran actually *does* have beef with tsukasa. When she beats her in vs mode she says tube foxes are the lowliest, most vulgar foxes.
I feel like the "ran isn't the fox, she's the shinigami" stems from the fact that the oni spirit possessing Chen is technically the shinigami. Ironically when not possessed she only really looses her powers. Also, she'd be way stronger if she wasn't a shinigami of a shinigami.
ShiKigami, not ShiNigami; not a big difference in writing, but a giant difference in meaning.
Having beef with the character makes sense, she provoked hostility first. Some people(Like me) just think it is kinda out of pocket to reflect it onto the entire kind of foxes considering these kinds just not liking each other(at least I heard so) shouldn't factor in, as Ran completely overwrites the fox.(Unlike Chen where the programming failed to such an epic degree that she...appearently just became the same as the cat? I imagine it like buying a PC in england and suddenly your windows installation starts talking like a localized Xenoblade-character.)

Also, why would you assume that Yukari completely erased her original personality when turning her into a Shikigami, considering she herself wants Ran to think more independently in the first place?
@@Arkios64 She wants Ran to...huh? Yeah, I am slowly reaching maximum confusion when it comes to this series, since last time I remember, Yukari still treated her like how a gamer treats their PC when it hangs up.

The way the shield works is that it's a free hit and you can recharge it by using an extra attack. I think sending a boss works too, but I don't remember. It probably does
There doesn't appear to be a limit. It seems unbalanced especially since grazing gives you charge points so you basically have unlimited charge during tight spells. It very well may be, but due to a skill issue on my part, it feels very balanced

they probably determined that most touhou players would know about thcrap.
just choose the language (EN by default) and any additional mods you may want.
it also automatically updates whenever new assets are updated, translated etc

A kudagitsune. A fox that is so tiny it can literally fit in your pocket. Or a tube, like a bamboo pipe.
I think her style of clothing is called "tube dress" or something like that. But there's probably something more to it and the dress is just a reference to it. Honestly, not sure, I've only just understood that she is the typical "mischieveous fox spirit" character.
