I watched this movie with my parents we do movie night every Friday and the day we watched it earlier at work that day I had customers that were deaf so that was super cool and when I got home after work I decided I was going to learn ASL for coffee shop baristas and found this Channel so thank you for your videos they helped me.

Your welcome the next time he came in I immediately went into signing and remembered the signs for coffee, ice and milk and his face when he realized I was learning Sign Language for him. I have really been enjoying learning it.
Thank you for taking initiative and an interest in learning. I have a few deaf coworkers and a large number of deaf customers who specifically shop at our location because our staff is one of the only in our city that knows sign. It's so important to know. Even for hearing people and parents. Babies who can't speak yet, still can understand us and they get frustrated in their lack of vocal skills. So if you teach a baby the sign for milk, toilet, more, food, hungry etc. that will make your life easier too. Also sign is awesome to know for hearing people too. Like when you need to communicate something to someone who isn't within ear shot. At work we all use sign and it's so much easier to ask for help via sign than yell across the store
flashing alarms aren't perfect...my college roommate was a *very* heavy drinker who slept right through high-wattage bulbs (yes- plural!) flashing away that pretty much figuratively blinded me.
This is one of the best movies I've seen in many years. I am an interpreter for the deaf and this rocked me to my core. ILY
It is so encourage to the world we work in on screen. I hope there are more movies with deaf as the lead characters in the future.
I like this video. I'm deaf . I use a hearing aid on the one ear that isn't completely gone. I also have ADD . I struggled as a child to learn sign language. I struggle still today because, my brain. It has it's own rhythm. But I'm trying and I'm hoping I can learn more as I watch. Your videos are the very first that actually make me feel comfortable. Is hard because I'm the only one deaf in my family. Entirely. From my parents. My extended family. My husband. My kids. My in laws . I'm the only one . I've learned over the years to just nod and assume I'm gonna miss half of what is said . I enjoy watching everything with headphones. I try to find some that turn up the volume so I can appreciate the music otherwise is just noise sadly. This movie is so emotional. I am however trying to learn sign language. My deafness is degenerative. I was already born deaf but I'm losing what little hearing aids help over the years .

I once had the most beautiful experience in my theatre career working on 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' with 'shadow actors. Members of the deaf theatre community. The joy they brought, the joy they gave, I will never forget. We performed one week with them shadowing us and one without. I can speak for all of us in how we felt lonely onstage without our constant companions. And it was a marvelous experience to get the reaction from the hearing audience members and then the ripple of laughter from the non-hearing audience members. I have never forgotten this experience.
This movie was incredible and great to see as an ASL student. I absolutely LOVED it, and so glad this got recognition. Hope they make more movies of this type💜

I actually learned something with the 10 out of 10 statement. Very cool! I instantly wondered if a hearing person ripped that off after learning it and we hearing been using it ever since not even knowing what we're doing! Laugh's certainly on us! 😄
My is Rami and I'm 42yrs my youngest has hearing difficulty. Fortunately enough her hearing can repaired. Regardless of this we as a family, father and 2 daughters have been following your channel to learn ASL all though we live in Australia we decided to learn ASL. It's has improved our family dynamics abundantly. It's Soo beautiful being able communicate with my daughters in a new meaningful way. Thank you sooo much for creating your channel.. This movie found a special place in my heart. I don’t know anyone deaf or anyone who signs, but I have a new appreciation for that. This movie made me cry and laugh in all the best ways. Truly a beautiful movie.

As I’ve mentioned before, it seems like Marlee Matlin has her own version of asl. She has her own personal interpreter and they understand each other perfectly. But every time I watch her, I’m at a loss. So, I believe I need more classes on receptive asl. BTW - TRIVIA!!
She was the first deaf person to win an Academy Award and used asl at her acceptance speech. Then she vocalized, “Thank you!” It was very moving.
The years I was a full time interpreter, I encountered some clients that were just harder for me to understand. This can also happen the other way. It does take practice and immersion.
And yes! Best trivia!!!
@@LearnHowtoSign I hired interpreters for an event with both Deaf and hearing presenters. There was some confusion because I hadn't informed them of that in advance. They teamed up more than I had seen in the past.

This movie had me crying!! I love the culture! I am currently learning ASL. I think sign language is beautiful! I am a first responder and I had a patient that was deaf! I was only able to do little things but she was sooo appreciative of that, she had tears in her eyes! Thank you for this breakdown!! Please do more!!! :)

I haven’t see the movie, but it looks so beautiful! I’m learning ASL like 9 years I love it I think is a language of heavens! But I haven found a place like your mention where Signer goes to socialize! So I can share what I have learned! God bless you Thank you for helping Deaf community! And helping us to learn!
She did say Deaf Coffee and Deaf Talk which is their 1x a month gathering. Wether you’d be welcome there or not would be up to the local chapter. Not that they don’t want to share their culture with you but it’s their time to not hv to teach or explain themselves, they can just be. Some drive long distances to ge to do this 1x a mo. There’s ways to get plugged in, you can always start with a local college to see if a deaf club is meeting on campus or has deaf faculty or teaches ASL, they’d be your segue into something more local and off campus. They usually will hv times for students, community members, etc to gather, practice and learn from one another.
I am so excited to watch this!!! I actually really need to watch the movie but I love the breakdown and I am in awe that there are more movies being made to represent the Deaf community and the beautiful versatility of the language!

Fantastic film!! I just saw it last night.
I like your video for its breakdown on what is being said in ASL as opposed the English captions, for the idioms, and for saying "God given talent" (amen), best.
It's like her brother wants society to remove the glass ceilings for disabled persons. He is right that technically a 150 pound deaf man can lift the same amount as a 150 pound non deaf man in labor, but the idea is not about physical force. It's about intelligence in a way, true change for deaf people that can remove those perceptions and thus boundaries.

I have not seen the movie yet, but this brake down of the movie was awsome. There are so many emotions involved the actors did a great job and you Meredith did a great job explaining it also. My favorite part was when Ruby left her home to peruse her dreams. I'm glad that her parents finally understood how important it was for her to live her own life and follow her dreams.

I started learning ASL because of CODA. Just last week my teacher taught the class the idiom DO DO. Hopefully there will eventually be an ASL Gloss version of CODA available. Thank you so much for making this video, and for (sort of) glossing the ASL in Frank and Jackie's NEVER BABY scene.

I haven't heared about this movie until your video came out and while I was watching the video, I decided to watch the movie first. It's awesome! It's hard to understand the signing parts without looking at the subtitles, because I'm from germany, yet watching a movie in english and in asl. That was a bit tricky to look at the signs, same time at the subtitles and to get the connection which sign could have meant what. But it is worth it. I really liked the movie. Thanks for talking about it, because maybe I never would have heared about it elsewhere.

That was great!!! I remember having to watch "Switched at Birth" as part of my homework in college. Attending ABC Story's when the actors came. It was truly amazing! Being apart of LHTS has revived a love all over again. Looking forward to more of this journey, nerves and all.

PLEASE DO MORE content like this!!! not having seen the movie yet, I cried while watching your video. Have you seen "Children of a Lesser God"? the series of books is Earth's Children by Jean Auel. They use sign language in that too. I had watched it right after I finished taking a course on ASL and was so glad I know what they were saying! It's been decades since I learned or even used ASL, so this is very refreshing for me. Thank you so much for making your channel!!!
Oh wow, this is full circle for me. I had absolutely no interest in ASL before, but when I randomly watched CODA, right after I went on CZcams to start learning a few basics, this LHTS was one of those channels I watched a few videos on. Now I'm learning a tiny bit everyday!

I don't understand why I haven't really heard about this movie until recently, but I guess it's because I don't get TV resepttion. I started learning sign language back in 1980 and I just learned some things in the last couple of minutes I didn't know all these years. I guess I will have to rent or buy a copy of the movie to watch it after all this time. 👍🏼👍🏼
This video is CHAMP! I'm so glad I found your channel. I have quite the crazy and peculiar background with this beautiful language, including my ABRUPT introduction to it in Ohio back in the early 90's. The same is true with my introductions and involvement with the Deaf communities in both Ohio and Florida, after moving there in 2003. Now having lived in California for over 11 years and not using any ASL for years, you forget SO MUCH! Somehow, as it always happens to me, I somehow meet or connect with a deaf person. It happened again a while back in Cali. Now I have several deaf friends. I've never gone to seek out the Deaf community, but somehow it finds me. Here in Cali, I've only been invited to a few small dinner parties and a few years ago, attended Deaf Fest - Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Guess I need to get back all that has faded in this old brain, and now I'll probably introduce myself into the Deaf stuff around here, instead of being pulled into it, as I was in Ohio and Florida! LoL 😆😂🤣😂😅😁

Meredith……You talk as if you’re ASL expert but why the heck were you running your mouth and not using ASL. Speaking of inclusive. And you didn’t use ASL, disappointing. You should never had made this video in the first place. You neglected to include deaf viewers. Are you afraid of deaf people criticizing you, is that why you don’t use ASL?

The developement of Nicaraguan sign language is a movie in itself . one of the youngest languages in the world created by children. the story of the discovery that Judy kegl found in Nicaragua would be very inspriational.

I had never heard of this movie until a month ago. My oldest friend (since like 1st grade or even kindergarten) whom i havent seen for probably 20 years came into town and i met her at church(we go to the same one). She is an interpreter and i also met her husband who is deaf. She introduced me to the interpreters at church and after service i was invited to see this movie with them. (In theater)This movie is excellent and touched my heart, made me laugh & made me cry. The dead silence in the middle of the movie was a punch in the chest (dont know what words to use here). The next day i started teaching myself the alphabet in ASL. I have worked on learning more everyday since. I just watched it again last night with the same emotional reactions as the first time. I recommend everyone should see it. I now have 3 new friends that i sit with at church that also help me learn. I have also been invited to an ASL event in a couple weeks that i WILL be going to. Thank you Meredith for your videos.
I have a friend who’s dad is deaf, and she is hearing. I don’t know much about her family other than her dad is a sweet man and one of the reasons I started learning ASL

I'm sure you have heard this before, but I'm older (80 yo) and considering legally deaf. My rt ear is dead and I have very limited hearing in my left. If its really quiet I can hear my someone talking, but if there is ambient noise forget it. Because of our ages my wife and I have trouble signing so we modify our signs to what our fingers can handle. Its actually kind of fun...I had no trouble with Ruby's signing in the movie or with most of the father's but I got lost on most of the mother's and brother's. And the dirty signs threw me for a loop...hadn't seen those before...great movie ...deserved the Oscar!
Coda is a double entendre. First as a CODA you pointed out. But it is also a musical term directing the musician to repeat a section.
I have not seen the movie (cannot afford the subscription on Apple), seen enough shorts and interviews etc. I saw one interview where Troy Kotsur says he had a father who was disabled , which he was helping look after and his father told him to go and pursue his dreams. So in a way doing this movie was a full circle moment, in which he allows his screen daughter to pursue her dreams.

Wow... Simply wow... ..working on relearning what ASL I started to learn decades ago. I have friends at work also trying to learn. I'm showing them this video and hope we can do a 'movie night' to watch 'CODA.'
Question? I'm wondering if I should invite my Deaf friends to join us? They work all the time to integrate into the hearing world with so many hearing people half trying to learn ASL (I pray I don't stay in that camp.) I don't want them to feel like they are 'Exhibit A' on display. ...best I can do is share my concerns...

I learned SEE for my niece. Both my father and I are hearing. But I used to lie under when my father (a concert pianist) used to play the piano. By touching the frame of the piano, l could "hear" the music through my whole skeleton.
I have always tried to hide emotion from my face so it is hard for me to use the right expressions. I’m trying to learn as I have been losing my hearing, almost completely in one ear and moderate loss in the other and I have always wanted to learn anyway. I am related to Troy’s wife and have met with them but I am such a bad communicator anyway so it was awkward. I would really like to learn more and always participate with your videos. Thank you.

This video isnt about teaching ASL, its introducing deaf culture and explaining how ASL is different to a hearing audience. She teaches ASL to hearing people. Shes advocating. Her other videos are about learning ASL. This is about experiencing and letting those experiences come, not from her as a hearing person, but from these actually deaf actors. Normally deaf people need an interpreter, this time we do. That showes her expertise so much more than signing along would.

Do, all of us, recognize that our world has been shaken in the best possible way. Deaf people and their families now have center of the stage attention. I hope that we continue to learn from them and become a more deaf-friendly place.
I so want to watch this movie. But I cannot afford to sign up for this app. I already have like Hulu and Netflix. I wish it would show on these apps. I am deaf in my left ear and very hard of hearing in my right ear which is declining quickly. I so need to learn ASL.
It actually was just announced in will be in select theaters for a limited time starting April 1st.
This was very interesting! I have a follow-up question. Can you see the difference in use of the sign language of Ruby (Emilia Jones) and her family? Since she only learned it for the movie and the other used it their whole life.
I think the actress did a great job considering how short a time she had to learn so many lines in a language very different than her own. That said, yes, we can absolutely tell she is not fluent. I didn’t find it distracting enough to break my suspension of disbelief though.

Sign language should not be a communication tool but an official language. It must be taught at all schools.

It is a language but it is not considered for schools . I’m a homeschooler and it’s not even considered for credit

@5:55 she makes a gesture of floating, off the back of her other hand. In another movie _(Wild Prairie Rose, go watch it)_ Troy's character makes a gesture that's not explained, where he makes a cup shape with one hand and uses the tip of his thumb and index finger on the other hand in a pinching shape to "pull" something out of the "cup," which then wafts away similar to the way this girl's "me" hand wafts or floats away.

I have a deaf uncle, he learned when he was younger to read lips. I tried when I was in elementary school to learn to sign-language. It didn’t stick with me because I learned to read lips better than sign language. But since deaf people are different from person to person it’s hard to read lips from another deaf person to another.
But take the phrase “Olive juice” can be misled to “I love you”
lots of questions to help read lips better can also help the deaf community to “talk” better to the hearing!
Don’t be afraid to talk to someone you can’t understand, because they might show you the way to love someone different than you!

In a way the movie brought me to your channel but 20 years ago I learned how to sign in Spanish. I then moved to Sweden and I didn't practice it so, you know. I have discalculia but I'm extremely good with languages. I speak nine and now I want to ass ASL. *ONE SMALL QUESTION* How do I take notes so I remember the signs without having to WATCH the videos over and over again? Sometimes I don't have my phone at hand but I have time to practice and the thing is that I only practice the signs I already know so I feel stuck. THANK YOU!!!

If you are considering watching films that discuss the deaf experience then I recommend checking out “A Silent Voice” it is an anime film but I would not recommend watching it with your kids. It touches on depression and bullying as well, to the extent that I do not think it is appropriate for younger kids. Since it is Japanese it is JSL rather than ASL so it would be a cultural experience. I watched the English dub on Netflix.
