In a way, it might be good it's taken this long for this trial to take place. Johnny's had some time to process this and detach himself enough to not react emotionally and compose himself. If this trial happened years earlier, he could have been in a more sensitive state and reacted more emotionally, and make himself look bad, even though he is in the right.

The attorneys are taking any evidence taken out if context that they can find to make him look bad. During recross, Depp explained that the reason he was upset about the coffee meeting was because Heard voiced her concerns to him about being type cast as the hot blonde who shows her books and wanted to be taken more seriously in the industry. They decided that all meetings, castings, and movie roles will be decided as a team to help her chose more "appropriate " roles that would help her career as a more established and taken seriously as an actress.

Jennifer Lawrence, Johansson, Theron, Emma Stone etc...have all gotten solid roles. The answer lies in Depp's own account of Heard's audition when he said he had doubts about her acting abilities. It's a competitive field and JD himself casted someone less gifted instead of finding a strong actress who was struggling to pay their rent. Head appears to strive for a superficial lifestyle way beyond what she's earned and thinks it's okay. But it was Depp who enabled her.
