Klay Thompson's downfall is heartbreaking

  • Klay Thompson has had without question the worst year of his career thus far with multiple upon multiple games of inefficiency and poor play but it must be stated how much the man has had to endure despite these struggles. The Warriors would not be what they became without his all time efforts but now he must face the reality of his and the organizations situation where he must take a reduced role and the possibility of being traded.

    bro i tore my ACL and i was like "alright im ready to workout and make progress in the gym" but no one told me that the mental game was just as big as the physical part. There were days where my knee felt great and i was like "alright making progress" and then other days my knee felt terrible and it made me depressed, like there wasnt an end to the dark tunnel. And you are right, when i started playing ball again, i was terrified of driving in because i didnt want to get bumped, dont want to do spin moves because dont want to tweak the knee, its a huge mental game.

    The mental toll injuries take is alot. I'm not trying to make this about me just trying to put in perspective how hard it is especially for a pro athlete like Klay to have motivation and keep on going. Having injury derail your career and see someone else doing your job better. That can't be easy. But no matter what happens what obstacles you face in life you just have to keep on pushing forward. I hope Klay can have a mental reboot in the off season get after it maybe get traded to a different team and prove he can still be a great player

    It feels like many people are flat out ignoring the fact that Klay is proverbially shooting himself in the foot and quite literally shooting himself out of the league. He’s had one of the worst shot selections of any player getting anywhere near his minutes. I don’t think anyone is expecting him to be a two-way perimeter player anymore. Defensively, Klay’s tall enough to be a presence on taller 3-4’s in the post or around the basket. Offensively, he just has to catch and shoot with the occasional one dribble midrange pull-up and drive to the basket when there’s an opening. But it is like he is hellbent on shooting every time he touches the ball like he’s running out of time, when in reality he could extend his career much further than any other injury-riddled player in the past just due to his shooting ability. Grant Hill was far more injury prone, more reliant on athleticism than Klay and still managed to play for 18 years. I can’t imagine what’s going through his head but I hope Klay realizes that he can undo a lot of the “mess” he’s making.

  • @AmandaabnamA
    @AmandaabnamA Před 7 měsíci +12

    Idk why he won't retire. He's good. I think it's ego more than the desire to play. Otherwise he wouldn't have demanded that $. Westbrook took many a beating in the media and took that pay cut and is balling. Different situation, but the love of the game is there

    • @cg3518
      @cg3518 Před 7 měsíci

      @AmandaabnamA Would you retire instead of making extra 10s of millions of dollars? Homie rejected a $48M, 2yr contract. Even a fraction of that is amazing money, especially when you consider the salary of players post career.
      Totally agree with you on the Westbrook point. Elite teams need roleplayers/veterans/journeymen. Hell, Turnoverbrook is elite for everybody on the court. It's not glamorous or as lucrative role, but teams need guys who can play well, shoot well, for limited time. Klay just needs to be humble...can't believe he turned down $48M.

    @Luca-yb4sh Před 7 měsíci +2

    I don't think he needs to be traded necessarily BUT he has to come to terms with reality, at least accept he doesn't bring value equal to the money he asks AND he has to start off the bench.

    Klay Thompson is the exact reason why I will always respect the absolute hell out of D-Rose. Because Clay is not working to get over the mental part of this. He's not trying to overcome the block that he has on himself. He's going to have to come to terms with the fact that he's just not what he used to be he's not being efficient and he needs to figure a way out around it rather than being the guy who sits on the bench when people are booing and laughing at him doing the fingers and going one two three four and showing that he's got thin skin.

    I feel like Golden State would give him a non-max extension for him to consider in this 48 hour. If he refuses, then it's highly likely that he will be traded before the trade deadline. Correct me if I am wrong, Golden State won't be able to refill the salary unless they trade Klay for another long-term salary. Of course, Golden State can just let Klay and CP3 walk and start the rebuild next year

    Klay could be much more valuable as a veteran leader on a team. A voice in the locker room. It is very sad to see what he’s going through right now but I feel like it’s going to be hard for young players to see him as a leader if he doesn’t climb out of this phase soon.

  • @SirThomas_II
    @SirThomas_II Před 7 měsíci +1

    This might sound a bit too wild but I really think Klay needs to hit the weight room and unlock a totally different beast. He's too far in his head thinking about who he used to be and where he is now instead of leaving it all out on the floor. Maybe I don't have the right to say that as I'm not an athlete nor have I suffered the injuries that he has. His mentality needs to change if he wants to create a new identity instead of remaining trapped in who he was

  • @Void7.4.14

    Yeah, I've been a fan of more than a couple guys that experienced horrible injuries/repeat injuries like Tmac, Penny Hardaway, D.Rose, Shawn Kemp, and Stoudemire. I also felt like Kobe still had more in him before the injuries. It's sad to see.
    I also had a bad injury a few years back that had me on my tail for more than 6mos. Literally wasn't able to do much of anything and the rehab was excruciating. And at the end I was overweight, weaker, and lost a lotta stamina that I'm just now starting to get back as I'm now starting to deal with bad Achilles Tendonitis again and going back to PT for it 🤦🏽‍♂️ But we shall overcome.

    it's 90% mental, he's missing open shots.. no point in trading him now, keep him on the bench, play him with the 2nd unit.. he's gonna feel like he has hit the bottom, like he's a bum.. but after a while he's gonna realize he has nothing to lose and still some more to give.. and that's when he's gonna start feeling good again, like he can rise again.. he'll never be a superstar again of course, but he'll be a great contributor from the bench playing 15-20 minutes a night.. if the warriors office can build a good team around curry one last time, don't be surprised if they win it all again in 2-3 years and klay becomes a great 6th man.. one last ride, baby

    This is something common in every sport. It sucks. Because the body is able to do what I can, but the mind has that injury on the back burner. It always haunts them because they can’t get back to where they were, and not because they can’t, but because mentally they just aren’t there

  • @timometsanoja9666
    @timometsanoja9666 Před 7 měsíci

    It is always rough to see someone never be the same again. And it is most likely due to some freak accident or unforseen circumstance that knocks him out. And it can weight on your mind a lot. Like a ton of bricks was dropped on your head. And yes, the mental comeback can be much lengthier than the physical one. I have experienced this myself... My injury was healed in like 2-3 months, but it took me a year to really trust my body again that it is really healed.
