There are many reasons why this issue has come up. But if you wanted to hear any good fm quality reggae on the radio in London, you had to listen to Rodigan on Capital or Williams, a black dj on the BBC radio, I think. They both got me, as a REGGAE Lover, into specialist record shops and departments. And the both got me going to blues, dances, and clubs. Brilliant as Sir Coxone was, and still is, there was a desperate need in the 70s and 80s for lovers of reggae to hear the rhythms on the airwaves. Rodigan had a crap radio slot as well. From a British point of view, it would be fair to say that Rodigan is the Radio Dj Godfather of reggae on the radio. National radio stations almost exclusively played only occasional pop reggae and Bob Marley. And that's another point. The British in general thought Bob was reggae and gave no space to Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs or even British reggae artists. It is sad that rhythm, harmony and melody in reggae has diminished; especially sad that the pressing of records has gone from Jamaica. Also, in the UK back in the times, there was American soul, disco, funk and jazz coming through and challenging the traditional reggae community. Then hip hop, house and acid music.
It's all very well Coxsone saying he entertains white and black, but at the start of 70s I'm very sure he had to play to almost exclusively black audiences at exclusively black held events. At those events the whites were exclusively women who had black partners.
Thank heavens Times have changed for the better. God of the sound systems - except for Jah Shaka - Sir Coxsone still needs to change some. Note: he is right. The best reggae music still comes from 70s and 80s. Dancehall and Jungle couldn't carry the music through.
Right now, I'm into dub techno music and reggae from various parts of Europe and Africa which isn't even in English. I'm always gonna love reggae.
    End of story.

I don't know what's in David Rodigan's heart and mind. But Coxsone is a 100% correct. Specials are gimmick music, to have some famous singers calling out your name is good to massage that individuals ego and whip up the crowd. It's good for sounds clashes other than that it does not help musicians.

Novelette you are missing the point and it is not about jealousy. Maybe you are a Jamaican who didn't grow up or live in the U.K.
The late great Mikey Dread said the same thing years ago in many interviews. he gave Rodigan a demo tape of his show, which had no talking just jingles and effects between the tunes. Rodigan took it to the BBC and they gave him a job hosting a radio show, they thought he had done the tape himself! His show with its jingles were a copy of Mickey Dread's famous radio show. They wanted a 'Charlie Gillet' of reggae and rap so if they had a white man fronting a specialist black music show they would have a wider audience. With a black presenter people may think 'it's just for black people' and no body would listen to it. That was why Charlie Gillett's World Music show was so popular. So you think out of all the black People who were making the music and playing it on sounds across the country they couldn't find anyone as good as David Rodigan or Tim Westwood to host a reggae and hip hop show on the radio? In his book he made the point that he never played live in a dance till after he had his radio show. Rodigan was never a sound man, and on his first dance the audience looked shocked when they realised he was white! That is probably why he boasts about his encyclopaedic knowledge of the music and naming obscure artists tunes, rhythms, or he has a dub plate no body else has because the artist Prince Buster did it for him as a favour! etc to make up for his lack of sound system credibility. He even acts like that in sound clashes like he is hosting his radio show! The others don't act like that it is cringing! All sounds have their exclusives. I recall seeing him at two major world clashes and both times he played the same dubs in the final round! He doesn't like other white sounds like sentinel from Germany. He likes being the main white man in reggae. But they are bonafide sound men they even have a woman selector one of the few sounds to have one and reached the top the hard way winning the world sound clash without a radio show. They were far better than him on the. CLash in Germany but by some fluke he won and he looked embarrassed How good is he apart from being a crowd puller, which is how he is the highest paid DJ . Papa Levi made the first anti Rodigan dis tune in the 80s 'RamJam Capitalsim' he made the same points as Coxson

  • @pythagaros99
    @pythagaros99 Před 7 lety +5

Rodigan has said before how he knows, or it has been said that he knows, reggae music better than Jamaicans. Please! he shouldn't say things linke that and be humble. All he does is read up, meets and talks to the big names in reggae over in Jamaica who will be ever grateful and overawed that a white Englishman has a reggae show in London promoting the music so they rush to do specials for him.
In london during his heydays in the 80s he sometimes would act like he was black or Jamaican and caused offence with his patronising. He was in a dance once boasting about a tune and background of it, he said ' tunes like this makes me think about being in Jamaica, eating my rice & peas while you English people here can eat your fish and chips!' It was his attempt at a joke but the audience went mad and he got cussed fortunately there was no trouble.
The reason for his attitude during the said 'heyday' he was biggest name in reggae in the U.K. Due to his show he decided what got played or was invited and if he fell out with anyone they wouldn't get played. He later claimed he had guns on his head by people telling him to play their stuff but he always refused. Maybe he was looking for sympathy After falling out with a producer/label or he wanted to sound like the big names in Jamaica who really went through that from stories he heard from them.
His show was about him. Tony Williams created the the first U.K. reggAe awards and had a chart show. Rodigan didn't do that and we no longer have uk reggae awards

Never heard Rodigan say anything like that, only ever heard him praise the music, the artists the producers and the sound systems, he shows upmost respect to the Jamaican music heritage, and I saw him on TV and on the radio when his book was released, he said nothing about being a godfather or anything like that, and his book is a homage to the music and the promoters! Yes, he has had certain opportunities being white, with radio access or whatever, but still he has done what many people do, promoted the music and given respect to it, you can't help being born white or black or whatever, and yes u can't help falling for the music you love too. Everyone has their own experience, so I don't disrespect, this my experience.

Rodigan may not of said it but he also didn't deny or aknowledge other black british, Jamaican men who gave him a huge leg up, which has made him the man he is today.
In many people's eyes David Rodigan is giving you half of a story.
And Lloyed Coxsone is giving you the rest, which many people won't understand unless you have experienced it.
I for one understand his plight, as my father was brutilised on a regular basis for giving not only his jamaican people but those people who were probably considered to be on the fringes of society a place that they would be accepted if you appreciated reggae music.
David Rodigan was one of those accepted people.

Maybe he should stick to bring a radio presenter instead of trying to be a sound man without a background in sound He got found out a few times when he invited the big sounds from Jamaica on his show like Gemini and Bodyguard in the 80s to clash. He made himself look a fool by asking Gemini if they play the tunes what the the DJs want to chat over. Gemini sounded bewildered and stated the obvious: 'we play what the people want to hear!' That made me wonder is Rodigan for real? When he clashed with Bodyguard he played dub specials 'who is going to Bodyguard the Bodyguard'. They just laughed and told him ' Rodigan you are playing Mickey Mouse, we get that all the time' they killed him with exclusive non special dubs. If Rodigannwas a serious sound man he wouldn't talk or play in such a naive fashion

From someone who was in the reggae- music business, from way back when, I give David Rodigan high regards for his contribution in spreading reggae music . However, I fully understand the contempt Sir Cox feels coming from David . For anyone except Toots and the late Joseph Hill( Culture) to say he is the godfather of reggae is a blatant disrespect to our heritage . Reggae music gets it name from Toots and Culture in the Bronx, NY. In fact, the name " reggae" came about by an accident . It was Streggae it was suppose to be named . However, the white woman did not hear what Toots said when she asked him " what type of music he was playing?" She jumped the gun and implied that he said reggae and he said yes, "reggae ". Yes; Toots and Culture gave birth to reggae in Bartley's night club in the Bronx.
The only fault I find with Sir Cox, is, he is not articulate in driving the point home : he is somewhat over the place. As a result, it make it seems as if he a racist . Clearly, he is not. What Cox is saying is not different from what we Jamaicans did to Bob Marley and other Rastafarians . We often sell out our own , yet; build pedestals and placed others on .

Rodigan has been coming to Jamaica for decades. He loves our music. And it is fear to say he has done a lot for the music. However, he is not a musician. Therefore, it is doubtful that a Reggae Historian and a Radioman such as Rodigan would refer to himself as the Godfather of Reggae. It is a well establish fact that Reggae came about when musicians decided to slow down the Ska beat and pick the guitar. I started following Rodigan in the nineteen eighties. Himself and Radio Disc Jockey, Barry Gordon had many clashes. I think Coxsone is bitter because the Jamaican people have bestowed one of their highest awards on Rodigan. Also, the brand, 'Rodigan' is a household name is Jamaica. Most Jamaican have never even heard about Lloyd Coxsone. And many of those who have-have never seen the man.

Kallian K Gaming, you can twist and turn all you want, Masquerading
trying to Dance around the facts; this Controversy started when a
white female presenter, said to David Rodigan, how does it feel to be
the Godfather of Reggae in the U.K., David Rodigan Reply to that
Question was, (( I am honoured )) he did not Refute that statement,
he happily took on that accolade, that he is the Godfather of Reggae

he accepted the title given to him by other whites, if he was a person

DJ's and Operators, who are the true pioneers of Reggae in England,
      including Sir Lloyd Coxsone,
I don't know why you seem to think that my view on the Subject, is
irrelevant, and yours is relevant, this is about the first people who
Established Reggae Music in England, who were blacks from the
Caribbean, and it doesn't matter how long you or I, have been Listening
to Rodigan, or Sir Coxsone and the others, the Black Cultural Archives
of Britain, show that the first Jamaican Sound Systems started in 1955
Rodigan first started on Radio in 1978, playing only for one hour, per
week, while Sound Systems were playing all around the Country every
night from 6pm to 7am in the morning, No Contest, moreover Rodigan
never had a sound, Reggae didn't start with Rodigan in the U.K. Reggae
      is bigger than Rodigan;
