  • TLDW (and extra info): My GT DD Extreme was working with 455 driver and firmwares, updated to 456 driver and FW, then the wheel got bricked after repeated attempts to update Wireless QR FW failed. Then I finally fixed it after several hours, the update finally worked somehow (yes I had wheel off). Then after that the wheel was glitching out bad in all games and GT7 with wheel "disconnecting" from base and random assorted things would break until reboot, it happened a lot while trying to race.
So after some research I decided to attempt to fix it. I completely uninstalled all things Fanatec from my PC and rebooted (windows 10 64). Then installed 455 driver on PC and rebooted, then downgraded wheelbase FW and then downgraded wheel FW but left Wireless QR FW to the most recent one, as I didn't want it to fail again. So now it seems to be working great. No problems at all after more than an hour playing GT7. I'm not saying it's completely fixed because there's still a known wheel disconnect issue regardless of FW but this combo seems to work the best right now until they release a FW update to fix it mid March (driver 457 and included FW).
If you're thinking about buying one, it's a great wheelbase and the GT Extreme wheel is perfectly fine but I'd probably hold off until these wheel disconnect and firmware bugs are sorted out. I'd like to think they'll fix it ASAP but who knows what will happen. I'm astounded they are not trying to get a patch out to fix it sooner than mid March. But yeah.. maybe I shouldn't be.
Overall it's a powerful wheelbase that has amazing force feedback, and has a ton of power, speed, and refinement. 8nm was enough overall torque for me I think, but the GT DD Pro 8nm doesn't seem to react to FF inputs from the game/ sim as fast or as precisely, causing me to have to use more NFR and NDR and other settings to get it to "feel right" and not wobble around and oscillate too much.
This GT DD X seems to be so quick and accurate that I can leave those filter setting completely off or turned way down and still not get oscillations but at the same time getting much, much stronger FF with lots of overhead for more if needed or wanted. It's not the overall power I'm impressed with, even though it's very powerful, it's the refinement and accuracy of the FF that is most impressive to me. I didn't buy this for the extra power, I bought it for the extra FF fidelity, accuracy, and speed. I didn't know what to expect but this FF feels amazing, head and shoulders above GT DD pro 8nm in every way. And the GT DD Pro 8nm is a fine wheelbase, but this is just way better. If you're reading this, you probably want to know how much better, or is it worth the upgrade? Yes it is, even if you only play GT7. It's like a different game with this wheel.
The wheel / rim itself is fine, not spectacular, way better than GT DD Pro rim. It feels good and I can race with it all day without gloves. 300mm is a good size, buttons all work fine, and it will be totally compatible with GT7 and who knows maybe GT8 or whatever they come out with next. Since I play a lot of GT7 lately, it made sense for me to get this package. I wish maybe the paddle shifters went down farther on the sides and the analog clutch paddles were a little lower but the shifters work nice. Shifter throw is a little long for my taste, but it's positive and works well. It'll be interesting to see what happens with more support in GT7 with "Fullforce" and everything else. I'm not sure I'll even like Fullforce, I tend not to like a lot of artificial feeling high frequency sharp vibes, that's why I usually run the lower slider in GT7 FF at 1 or 2 at the most. Anything higher and it starts feeling really unnatural to me with all the high frequency buzzing that slider induces, especially on understeer. But that's a personal preference thing.
Note: The settings listed in vid were just for that race, and were on the light side, I was driving for a while and was getting tired! I change the wheel settings and experiment a lot, but those felt good on that track with that car.
Also there's probably a slight time delay on the wheel video bottom right. You can see game shifting before I click gear lever but steering seems to line up perfectly. It looks like I'm reacting to what's on the screen instead of initiating it. I know you can't "see" force feedback but maybe it'll give you some idea of what it's like. Even in GT7 it feels great and I realize GT7 doesn't have the most direct and refined FF in the world, but with this wheel it still feels great to me.

Thank you for this video. I have this wheel and wheelbase too for a couple of weeks now and love it. Upgraded from a controller.
I have read extensively that setting the FFB on the wheel base to 100% and reducing in game Force Feedback this prevents clipping on the wheel base. Having a lower setting on the wheel base means it cannot send all the data through and reduces feel and signal. So best recommendation is to set it at 100% so everything is sent then filter within GT7 FF setting. Mine is at 4. Fanatec Forum also supports this recommendation in best settings post for our wheel base.

    • @bwx_gaming
      @bwx_gaming  Před 16 dny +1

Thanks, no problem. Yeah I've heard people say that too and I've tried it many times.
I go more towards that direction than not (higher on wheel, lower in game with) with this beast of a FFB wheel base, but it hardly ever feels right to me at 100% FFB. Maybe if there was such a thing as a race sim with perfect physics and perfect FFB effects then that would work, but setting FFB to 100 is only one setting out of a bunch of different settings on wheel and in-game that all affect each other. So it depends on a lot of different settings what 100% FFB does.
The first FFB wheel I had was more than 25 years ago and I can't even remember all the wheels I've had. I tend to find what works for a game or sim in general and then go from there on a per-car basis and tire type basis. Race tires feel a lot different than road tires, same with dirt and snow tires.
I don't use the settings in vid, I do go higher on FFB on wheel and lower in GT7 top slider (force) most of the time but almost never 100% on the wheel. Maybe in cars that have no power steering in real life, like open seaters or go carts, but most cars in GT7 have power steering racks, so I try to make it feel like what I think the real car would feel like. Or at least so that the max force you feel normally would be what that car would be like in real life with a little extra to simulate G-force. I try to get the best feel around the center for road feel.
In GT7 the top slider I usually set lower, about 4 to 6, and the bottom slider higher, 7 to 10. And FFB% on wheel around 50 to 85. But it depends on a lot of the other settings on this wheel what that feels like and how strong that is when you're driving.
Like on that McLaren / Le Mans time trial I had it set like this and it felt really nice:
      - In GT7 -
5 on top slider, 8 on bottom slider.
      - On Wheel -
      SEN: AUTO
      FFB: 60
      NDP: 10
      NFR: OFF
      NIN: OFF
      INT: 5
      FEI: 100
      FOR: 100
      SPR/ DPR: OFF
      edit- this car: czcams.com/video/tEOsVMPxjFI/video.html
If I cranked FFB to 100 with those settings it would feel way too strong when hitting curbs and you'd get huge jolts through the wheel that were way too strong at times, so then you'd have to reduce FFB in game further, and then lose tire/ road feel just off center. I'd encourage anyone to listen to what other people say, try their settings, and then do a lot of experimentation by themselves to figure out what works best for them personally. I think it's different for everybody what they think it should feel like, and how to get it dialed in to your taste. It's probably more important to understand what each individual setting does and how that affects the overall experience. The only way to do that is experiment a lot and try different things. ✌

@@bwx_gaming thank you for your detailed reply and thoughts, that very useful and appreciated you taking the time to respond is so much depth. I have yet to tinker with each setting to see what it actually does, so your recommendation is sound and I shall follow that suggestion. I agree about personal settings and how it feels to the individual, I copied someone else's settings and could not get on with it as it was way too strong using the same track and car as they had. Brings it home to you about personal settings and there's not a definitive one size fits all setting for each characteristic. Still on a steep learning curve and currently I'm still quicker on the controller than on the wheel. However I do notice I'm more precise and my braking is better and more refined. I just need to practise, practise, practise.

Wow man you're in for a treat! I've had a few G25s since they first came out in 2004 and wore them out, I think 3 of them, same basic internals as the G27 and G29. And then a cheaper Fanatec belt drive and then GT DD Pro 8nm and then this GT DD Extreme. That's not counting all the cheaper wheels before the G25 like the DFGT Pro and Logitech Momo, Logitech Driving Force EX and some cheaper ones before that way back in the day. So yeah you're not going to believe it, hope you have a sturdy sim rig!

@@bwx_gaming Thanks for the warning ! I, too, had a couple of older wheels before the G29. One I can’t remember the name of, that was in the days of GT2. Then a long gap before buying a G27 for GT4, including the shifter. That felt like a massive step up in immersion. I played that whole game using the clutch and shifter. I only upgraded to the G29 because one became available at a decent price. Since the release of GT7 the G29 has been ok, but I’ve always disliked the ‘clunky’ feel of the gear driven mechanism. I fully expect to see a drop off in lap times owing to my inexperience of load cell pedals. I’m getting the V3’s to go with the extreme bundle.

You can forget you're in a house in a sim rig at times. Feels like you're really in the car at a track, flying down the road. I like these CSL Elite V2 pedals but I'll probably upgrade to whatever they come out with next. A force feedback load cell brake could be really interesting, on the Dual Sense Edge the brake "pedal" FFB is pretty cool, would be cool to get that on a real brake pedal.

I received my kit about a week ago. The base is nice but in GT7, the logitech pro has quite a bit more detail and road feel. It feels like Im missing a lot on the DD+ Fanatec. The GT7 rim has a cool screen that isnt really utilized in GT7 yet. And the rest of it feels like recycled plastic unfortunately. And it glitches randomly, like pulling the e break sporadically, its really strange. Im on driver 455 by the way. I am now only using my other Fanatec wheels. If the logitech pro had a good e break and shifter to attach to it, it wouod be amazing. At least Fanatec has the ecosystem.

Yeah I hope Fanatec will hurry up and fix the firmware, it sounds like that’s causing most of these issues but it also sounds like we’ll be waiting till mid March which is insane if true. They should get that hotfix out ASAP. Just have to wait. Thankfully I finally got mine working a lot better with that combination of firmwares.
Also I would have thought PD would have updated GT7 with full support for new wheel last update even if they didn’t release Full Force yet.
I almost went with that Logitech Pro wheel instead of GT DD Pro last year but I already have Fanatec peripherals and I hate G Hub software with a passion 😆. I use it with my G Pro wireless mouse and the mouse is great but that software bugs me. But that’s a nicer wheel in some ways, but my pedals/ shifter are a lot better than what’s available for the Logitech. Logitech definitely could build an ecosystem around their Pro wheel.
I think this base will end up being better but yeah the wheel is nothing special, but good for GT7. I’d be interested in a better GT rim if they ever made one. Maybe something a lot nicer in the $500 range with much higher quality materials. That would be pretty cool if they came out with something like that.

Once full force comes it will he on par with much more power. For me I would rather feel the weight them the detail. Aslo please try this, set to max on the base. I’m debating between DD Pro and this one - currently using T-GT II. I was waiting for some real reviews from people buying it with their own money not CZcamsrs supplied by Fanatec.😃
So you think it’s worth getting it (not considering the price difference) over the DD Pro for GT7?

    • @bwx_gaming
      @bwx_gaming  Před 4 měsíci +1

Oh yeah for GT7 I'd say so, it's worth it. Otherwise maybe just get the Clubsport DD+ and your choice of wheel for PC and other games. If you even have the thought in your head of spending this amount of money on sim racing gear you probably enjoy the hobby and spend enough time doing it to justify this sort of a purchase, so might as well get the best you can afford within reason. That's my philosophy.
It's like someone spending a ton of money on golf clubs, I'll never understand exactly why, but the person who wants the really nice golf clubs understands. It's like when you got your first nice FF wheel, the cheaper ones always feel "toy like" somehow. It's the same with the GT DD Pro compared to the Extreme, it's like orders of magnitude better in most every way. Maybe not on paper but it feels like it, the same way a DD Pro feels like compared to a G25 or something like that. The FF is that much better. The DD Pro is great for the price though and I had a lot of fun with it. But the GT DD X is an another level, even in GT7 that admittedly doesn't have amazing FF to start with, the DD Extreme brings it up another level. No question about it. ✌
Edit- i'm mostly describing the wheelbase and FF, not the actual wheel / rim itself which is fine, but not amazing. I like all the buttons and directional stalks and gamepad button layout even for PC games and sims though. It makes navigation in menus better, and I don't have a dedicated button box.

No regrets, it's a really nice DD wheelbase, super powerful and precise. it has lots of "bandwidth". Feels good at higher FFB levels but also with lower FFB. The wheel / rim itself is fine but not anything special, but works great in GT7 obviously with all the specific buttons for PS5/ GT7. But you can upgrade to a much nicer wheels.
"Fullforce" and the wheel itself is not even fully supported in GT7 yet so it should only get better over time... that is if Fanatec as a company is still going in the future which I'm 90% sure will also be fine. I'd check out the situation with Fanatec before buying though.
I ordered this the day it was available and it all was delivered (NY, USA) within 2 weeks so no problems there either. The issues become apparent if you have a problem that requires RMA or warranty work, it's not going to be a quick or smooth process right now, hopefully that will also improve in the future.
The FFB is great though and PS5/ PC compatibility made this the obvious choice for me. I'm not a rich guy and this was expensive! But not really that expensive compared to other hobbies that people can get into, like real motorcycles and real cars, etc.. But with this wheel and PVR2, in a solid rig with bass shakers, it's crazy immersive and fun. I'm definitely getting my money's worth out of this stuff!

If you want a better experience. Use the older wheel rims. But as you said when its working its like 8x more ppeerful then the gt dd pro it feeklls like a substantial upgrade. So its worth getting but again please guys just get an older rim instead of the gt7 the qr2 plastic alone doesnt fit eell. Get the alu qr2 instead and put it on an older wheel rim adn then enjoy! Best idea is to use a rim that takes less power due to lights etc. Until the update works on the chip.
Please please listen to me guys, when you get these do not update them. Just use them they are ready to use out of the box. Also dont donwload fanalab. Wait until the updates are all ironed out.
Also when updating like all other older fanatec stuff. Make sure yoyr wheel rim is taken off whenn updsting the wheel base. People seem to he getting slack with this. It will always be best with fanatec stuff to take the wheel rim off.

I think I had to update it to at least 455 for it to work with PS5, but I would not touch 456. The bug is with the base 456 FW though, so it's ok to leave 455 base FW and update wheel and QR FW. And if 457 doesn't have any major bugs I think that driver and FW versions will probably be the one to upgrade to when the time comes. I guess now it's going to be mid APRIL! That is if they dont come out mid April and say it's delayed for another several weeks or months. Yeah that is ridiculous. And also no support for wheel in GT7 after 2 updates so far which is also ridiculous but oh well..

@@bwx_gamingWith that rim attatched ypu def needed to update it luckilt i got the mclarne gt3 which has had plenty of updstes over the yesrs so it will already be ready. The base wont need it as its ready out of the box. But the gt7 wheel rim isnt. It needs to uodate for that rim to even work on ps5 with the bade so makes

@@reviewforthetube6485 Yeah I tired the WRC wheel with the plastic QR2 wheelside I took off of the GT wheel and the WRC wheel worked fine. I bought a metal QR2 for this GT wheel. I'm definitely going to get a nicer wheel for this base, just trying to decide. I kind of want to get a Clubsport formula V2.5 because I've never had a formula style wheel but it doesn't even come with clutch paddles like the GT or CSL Mclaren GT3 V2 so I might just get the Mclaren wheel and wait for something better to get a nicer formula style wheel. But that Podium GT World challenge wheel is looking very tasty to me! But for GT7 I definitely like all the buttons and directional stalks on the GT wheel. I just with they'd make a GT wheel like this but much nicer with a metal rim and leather and nicer buttons and shifters and everything. I doubt that will ever happen though.

@@bwx_gaming yeah sew the wheel rim is what's causing most of the issues which I knew from the start it would. The chip in the base for sony is the same as all the other chips in older ones so I knew that would work but with the new rims it can cause serious issues.

@@bwx_gaming I got the mclaren gt3 rim it may be plastic also but it somehow seems nicer the usability is amazing and it doesn't need as much power as the gt7 wheel rim does so aka less issues. At the moment. I suggest anybody with the dd+ just like the dd1 at first to only buy wheels with less lights on them that take less power so it minimizes the connection issues. Until the updates work things out which they will do. People just gotta remember fanatec takes forever for firmware. Also never ever do a new update until you see what others are saying about it.
