    I'm glad how you used the ''RI:SE and fall'' title i've suggested for this video, it perfectly fits!

      Yes indeed thank you, when you mentioned it I had an idea of the rise logo which was a digital clock typeface having an error and reading 'Fall' and then glitching to fail. Thank you for watching and happy new yearrrrr!

    Whatever casting director thought that Mark Duran-Smith would be a good fit for breakfast TV was seriously overpaid. He's a good presenter and a good fit for rugby, but he is also the embodiment of the kind of person that puts other people off rugby.

    I remember watching Ri:SE first off when it started and thinking it was a breath of fresh air, it wasnt as boring as BBC Breakfast and was better than GMTV. It was very 'newsy' to start with and then for me it got better when Ian and Kate was on as it seemed to open up to newer features. In 2003 I was 16 so they was prob my target audience I remember Kate winning BB the year before and fancying the pants off her! :D and Ian seemed like a good laugh who reminded me of a mate who had bags of energy and was funny. It was a shame it ended but I guess it relied to heavily on the presenters to carry it, also on Big Brother that was happening at the time. I guess nothing could really live up to The Big Breakfast which was fun but I was mostly too young back then and preferred listening to the radio in the mornings. It wasnt till around 2002 when I got a TV in my room did I have the TV on of a morning and go through the channels. C4 in the mornings now what is it? Everybody Loves Raymond? last time I bothered to look anyway! I dont think it can recover from it now.

    Great series about Channel 4's morning shows. I really miss the more fun approach to morning television and the great presenters that they found, that made it worth getting up early to watch. It would be great to see what your take on TVAM and all the ITV follow ons would be like.

    Iain and Kate (Especially Iain) would have been perfect in the OG Big Breakfast setup.
    Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

    • @jonkasonic
      @jonkasonic  Před 8 měsíci +3

      Yeah indeed, I have thought of how channel 4 could have dug themselves out of the hole.
      They could have ditched rise after a year and brought back BB "by popular demand". That way they could relaunch, maybe even used Iain Lee (as they asked him to do it) as a main host. if it looked like a u turn, channel 4 could have said that it listens to its audience.

      @@jonkasonic I do remember that the Big Breakfast felt really passé by the time it died (I was still a big fan) and the Johnny/Denise revival seemed to be a surprise for everyone. I think they just felt like its 9 lives were up. I don't think there was any popular demand even if they'd tried sadly. It's a shame Channel 4 gave up on the breakfast magazine format in the end.

    Sad that it’s been years and years of reruns on Everybody loves Raymond and Frasier. I honestly don’t think they can recover from it.

    Oh hey, I'm the first one here! Amongst the hosts, that I could find a list of on Wikipedia. For a time Kirsty Gallacher hosted it, and what she went on to do was host a breakfast show on GB News very briefly. I'm not holding it against her, just that is a bit of a rubbish employer.
    How that's still going, god only knows? You'd think that all the auditing that Ofcom (and being found to be in breach of impartiality rules and other rules) did of the station would be enough to put them out of business.
    Anyways, great video! Thank you very much for your dry delivery and also being very informative. I didn't really grow up with breakfast television apart from Dick and Dom in the Bungalow, which was a hilarious little romp filled with custard and chaos.
    (The presenters weren't really the problem in its later configuration, it was the content. When Big Brother was on, it was Big Brother ad nauseum. If Iain and Kate were there from the beginning, maybe it would've been better, and there could've been more features and phone-ins, not just focusing on news).

    • @jonkasonic
      @jonkasonic  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hehe thank you :) yeah I think there will be a point where gb news has to change something. They seem to have carved a little space for themselves but I'm nit sure what their next move is, and how well its going ratings wise but I'd imagine they'd have to be less cringe.
      Yeah on this one I didn't mean to be as dry as i was! Hehe, but I know I cut down on the sketches and cut away bits so going to add a little more into that in the new year :)
      Happy new yearrrrr!

    I remember first seeing Iain Lee co present The 11 O Clock show in 1997 or thereabouts with Daisy Donovan. There was something about him that was very engaging. That show also introduced us to Ricky Gervais and Sacha Baren Cohen. Iain had to cut Ricky off when he just about dropped the C Bomb doing a sketch about the American T V Show Quincy. 😆
    I never watched RISE. I switched from Big Breakfast to the rather dour BBC Breakfast by then. Not to mention that I had to go work!

      I am thinking about it but thinking about how to do it because Bob The Fish already did a good take on it and with other places where I've covered bits that have others have, I've basically presented what the others have but dressed in different clothes, so I might do. There's a bit more footage available now and more information that could be added... I will let the seeds mentally grow for now and see what happens ;P Happy New yearrrr!

    RI SE wasn't really noticed back then, GMTV was actually the popular light option while BBC Breakfast had obviously the heavy news viewers

    • @jonkasonic
      @jonkasonic  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Yeah I was one of those who stuck with channel 4 until I started doing my first official radio station in the mornings but I liked rise. I was very much in the mindset of not really caring too much about news but when big brother started I got fatigue a week in and started listening to Kiss 100 (which was on freeview at the time). Bambang at breakfast and Kisstory :P

  • @steviegTVreturns
    @steviegTVreturns Před 8 měsíci +3

    A great video series Johnny, thank you for detailing RI:SE as there’s very little of it online. FWIW, the second version of RI:SE was disrupted by the Iraq war to the point where Channel 4 had to revert to ITN for News between 7 and 8:10am, with RI:SE following until 9:30am. Obviously RI:SE in either form wasn’t going to be the go to place for news coverage. I’m in the minority that enjoyed the first version of RI:SE, yes it wasn’t great TV but it did the job, it gave you the information you needed. The ratings for RI:SE v1.0 only ever want above The BB’s when Big Brother was on, other than that they were dead last each morning. I wasn’t a fan of the second version as it felt like a gentrified version of The BB.
    I didn’t mind The BB reboot they did in 2021/2, I’m not sure it would fly 5 days a week though. Unfortunately I’ve got to that age where I’m stuck with BBC Breakfast as all of the alternatives are too shouty debate led.

    I just remember being absolutely baffled by the RISE trailers, they gave NO indication what kind of show it was, the vibe, the feeling, NOTHING.

    Filmed from the now defunct Whitley's shopping mall in Bayswater RI:SE was (2003). Not a great show, but I loved the interview they did with Feeder in 2002. Not long after Jon Lee sadly died (previous drummer and founding member)

    I’ve spoken to Iain Lee and he’s on my FB. He’s clearly a good guy regardless of anyone’s feelings on the 11 o’clock show (which I quite liked but I remember TV Quick ripping it to shreds for some reason. They’d print comments like “go away you awful people” in the synopsis for the show in their listings. Did they slag TV Quick off or something?).

    Rise never really worked somehow as you have explained excellently. Shame it killed Iain Lee`s Tv career as he was very good late 90`s early 00`s. Also this has just reminded me how much i used to fancy Kate Lawler.

    For a show to "officially" record 0 viewers, it has to be at or below a certain figure. I do wonder what that is.

    • @timgoodwin4424
      @timgoodwin4424 Před 7 měsíci +3

      I don't believe that as I watched this every day it was on. Channel 4 was always the morning choice in our house even during Rise. That was up until 2005 when we switched to BBC one.

      @jonkasonic  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yeah, they could have undone that. Maybe if they had brought it back after Rise series 1 as a big return, had Iain Lee as one of the main hosts (he was asked to be on BB) it may have changed the fortunes of the show
