- Exploring Golden Acre Park in Leeds, the park that was supposed to be the Coney Island of Yorkshire. Looking back at the History of the Park, from where it started up to where it ended. Then we do a full explore of the whole site. Looking at what remains on the site, and also a nostalgic look back at what was once there.

I’m not sure if you could do this Darren but could you do the old buildings that were mills in and around Bradford ? Not sure what’s left as I’ve only been there a few times and it was passing through. I’m a loiner and love leeds but it would be interesting to see parts of Bradford or saltaire xx just a suggestion x

One of the most beautiful parks in Leeds especially in summer, the gardeners work hard to make it as it is well worth a visit a cuppa & a walk.
Thank you for the walking tour today, Darren. Thinking about the timing of the start of this beautiful park in the late 1930’s, and its ultimate demise after World War Two, the residual effects of war have a unending disturbance to all lot of projects. Luckily for the citizens of the Leeds area, you have some residual and quite picturesque remains. Again thank you for the tour, and as always, its good to see you again. See you on the next, Darren. Great video. I used to live in Bramhope as a kid and we came to the Blue Lagoon. I'm pretty sure it was still going in 1962 and maybe even 64. Leeds University students had fun one time during rag week when they dyed it red.
If I lived closer me and the wife and Kev (Jack Russell) would love to walk around here. Some very interesting things are still remaining. Seeing the edge of that pool was quite exiting even from in front of a screen 😂

Great video, I love Golden Acre Park. I'm 48 and have been going there since I was little with the family and my Mum's ashes are also scattered there. Holds many memories
Evening Darren, superb find this is , hard to imagine the outside pool with open spaces around it like the photo shows a and now surrounded by trees, but its only been shut since 1961 I think you said, so those trees have grown at a very fast rate. Looking forward to part 2.

Fascinating. My father used to manage the scout camp at Bramhope in the early sixties I remember we used to pass this place every weekend, never went inside but this video satisfies my curiousity of yesteryear. Thank you and greetings from Costa Rica.
I lived in Adel for 15 years and used to take my dogs to Golden Acre Park everyday. This is a brilliant vlog and you’re really bringing what used to be there to life. I can’t believe the lido is still visible, I’ve never seen it before. Thank you for doing this!

A ghost of its former self, but still looks good for a pleasant stroll. A pity the other attractions were removed, though I guess it's relatively lower maintenance saved it from being sold to developers - and thus, returning full-circle to the original vision.
I'm originally from Chapel Allerton, now living abroad, and never knew anything about the history of the park.

This reminds me of Wickstead Park which had a similar idea of park, rides with a lake and miniature railway. Just like the old footage, you walk on the railway bridge to complete the lake circuit.
Main difference is that Wickstead hasn't changed a lot, even the old water chute is still working

I played Golden Acre Park with my band last summer but didn’t have a look around, I’ll make sure to when we play there again this summer.
Think the Blue Lagoon continued after 1961, can well remember going there in the early 60's from school in Meanwood. Fascinating that you dug up this one !

There is some sort of band stand or summerhouse hidden in the trees up there.
The walk I'm on about goes from where the old baths were up the hill, parallel to the lake and eventually comes out near the folly.

Absolutely fascinating.Thank you for researching this for us.I was born 1950 and we lived in Adel.I used to come here often with friends as a child and remember the Blue Lagoon pool which was whole but looked unused etc c 1962, and I presumed was owned by the Parkway Hotel. My mother born 1921 came from Headingley and she always told me the park used to have a railway and a fair and a dance hall, but only pointed out where the railway was.Still visit occasionally now for the lovely gardens and cafe plus summer concerts .
Watching from Australia nowadays but I grew up in late 80's in Holt Park, right across the road from Cookridge hall. We used to walk down through the old house that was derelict back then and go down to Pauls Pond which often looked well eerie on a morning with the mist over it. We'd then walk down through Breary Marsh and on to Golden Acre Park. Never had any idea that any of this even existed.
There's loads little secret things around that area, head towards Adel and there's the church there which is a Norman church built on top of an even older Saxon church. I believe the arch door is Saxon. Further down Adel beck is the craggs, then the little pond thing and some kind of well thing. On the other side of the beck there's the derelict old buildings of the Leeds Boys Reformatory which is really creepy to wander around at night. Go a bit further down the beck and then you get to Seven Arches Aqueduct which used to supply water to the city.

I've been past tgat Park many times on A65 up to the dales. Even went to a wedding at tge Parkway in 1968.. very intresting. Like your programs...I'm from Leeds originally

This park looked like a gem when it was in its heyday, Darren. It was such a tragedy that it couldn't have come back into reality again. There was everything in the place. What comes to my attention in this video is the photograph of that steam locomotive (at time 2:50) with the driver (I presume) at the side of it. I wonder what ever became of it, as it's the finest locomotive of that scale of any I've ever seen before! It's a sort of design of a North Eastern engine, wow! Most excellent description of the park, and so many thanks for showing us this place.
Interesting vlog. When I was a student in Headingley in the 70s I walked around Golden Acre Park many times enjoying the well kept gardens but totally unaware of what used to be there.

Brilliant, yet again
The blue Lagoon was an open air swimming pool much the same as the outdoor swimming pool at Roundhay park, when we were kids we played in the empty pool before it was filled in, the lake at Golden Acre park is the source of both Adel Meanwood and Sheepscar beck which eventually runs underneath the present day bus station to the river Aire there is a sluice gate at the rear corner of the lake.
Thanks for taking me somewhere new, I had heard of the railway there, but had no idea about the rest of the park. Now looking forward to part 2. BTW love the gloves

As you went through the tunnel under the road, if you had turned left and followed it along for half a mile, there is another lake called Paul's Pond

Hi Darren, didn't know about that park at all, I'm a post war boy from the wrong part of the HWD so Leeds wasn't on my early formative years 🧐 Yeadon was nearest I ever got to that area on Sunday tea treat at Harry Ramsdens chippy 😋 The present park reminds me of Heaton Park here on outskirts of Mancs. I bet you were gagging to get at that sort of blocked culvert from the lake😎 knowing you. Cheers DougT

I found this so interesting iv been there a few time not my choice of park as there is nothing to do there not even a play area for kids but there is small area of nice gardens
I've been there many times and never had a clue! I'm sure my parents will have told me about it when I was younger but I didn't remember. It's amazing just how quickly something can change so drastically. Golden Acre Park is known for being a beautiful place but when compared to what it once was, it sort of looks a bit dull.

My mum said that the local coal merchant used to put benches into the back of his cart and take kids from Burley Village (Kirkstall) up to Golden Acre on a Sunday.
Also in Leeds there is a prehistoric earthworks settlement in Gipton Wood

Hi Darren, you,ve done it, this is the one I thought needed the AdventureMe treatment, I'm so so busy I never got back to you but I swear I have still got pages open in my browser from researching interesting links to Golden acre for you, I wanted to comment b4 I watch it, then see if you have used some of the overlays and old train videos I imagined would fit well and over 19 mins can't wait, wifey just getting in the bath, she said I gotta wait until she gets out to watch it😁

Never heard of Golden Acre Park. Then I learned it (the original) was only open for 6 years.
I'm going to visit this park and check it out actually as visit Leeds City quite regularly but never been here.

I am a Leeds lad and knew a little bit about this. I love to go exploring and researching. I think if you got a drone it would help buddy. Sometimes the Birds Eye view can show things better. Please do more in leeds as it’s fascinating and your approach is very professional but not rigid. Thank you.

@@AdventureMe you can at the far end of the lake as it’s out of the 5k airport perimeter so about 1 3rd of the park but from the hight you can zoom in and see the rest. I have snapped my Achilles tendon and am house bound for 12 week and found your channel 2 days ago, it’s keeping me sane lol. I can’t wait to get healed up and get out there again. Your work on Leeds station is amazing.

Unfortunate timing for the park I guess with the war. Council's like Scarborough deserve all the kicking they get with what they've done to the place over the years but at least here Leeds council have looked after the site and not bowed to developing houses on it. Money will have been tight straight after the war too so for once can't knock em 👍
You said Darren one of the reasons for the fun fair to close was it’s distance from Leeds. Did a tram run that far or did the trams run at all on Otley Road through Headingley.
Not that far no. And no stations nearby. Quite isolated up there.
Nice video of golden acre park Poseidon and Robin Hood would run in the early 30s to 1938 now both engines howsed at the North Bay Railway
