    I can't believe Brian actually showed up during this awful period for him. The last one you expected to survive went on to thrive ... into old age even. Never would've predicted that ever.
    Every time I see him since he recovered feels like a special gift and I get goosebumps. He came to understand on a fundamental level how deeply his art affects his admirers, and it became the reason he turned a corner and finally learned to enjoy performing live. Because it's a spiritual being-of-service thing for him now. An amazing story of a bonafide singular national treasure.
    We'll never see the likes of BDW again. If you think his art has been discussed a lot while he's been alive, just wait till he leaves us. Just watch. Legend is the right word.

      Being true to your school was supplanted with be true to your government.
      People just couldn't, as their consciousness' expanded , bop along with joyful tunes in such a heavy time.
      They weren't morbid enough, so they were shunned. Even the Beatles remained relevant by trading in "I want to hold your hand" for "happiness is a warm gun" during that era.
      Good vibrations were being replaced with fear to keep the war machine oiled and the tax money flowing, so The Doors doing Riders on the Storm fit the psyop better than Don't Worry Baby

    Elora thank you so much for this improved concert. This was such an important day for me - I was on a trip to visit my girlfriend in Portland, Oregon so I asked a friend in NY tape this show for me (the good old days of VHS tape). I did get to watch some of it that day with her, but couldn't wait to see the whole thing by myself when I got home. For me, this was a tough concert to enjoy, they missed Carl's leadership on stage and generally did not sound good at all, a good amount of off-key singing. Having said that, my favorite part of the show were the three great songs Lady Lynda, God Only Knows, and Don't Worry Baby. Lady Lynda is such a great song, and though I understand why Al stopped singing it, I do miss it very much. Yes, Brian had some issues during "God Only Knows", but he really tried his best and, though I cringed in spots, I was so proud of his efforts. As for "Don't Worry Baby, right at the beginning, I just love the shot of Dennis looking over at Brian and giving him that "go get 'em" signal. And when Brian realized that he was having trouble hitting the high notes, as the song progressed he shifted to those lower harmonies which just made me so happy. As I said - it was a tough day, but that section filled me with joy. I also loved Bobby's "Sail on Sailor" - he always rocked that great tune. Thanks again for this, so happy to see it again.

    I was there and it was held in my hometown of Long Beach, Ca. Their first paid gig was in Long Beach in 1961 and to celebrate 20 years as a band they had a free concert in parking lot of Queen Mary which is docked in Long Beach. You will notice that no one ever mentions the city of Long Beach and that is on purpose. Long Beach had agreed to let BB have a free concert on the beach on Long Beach and all the sponsors and everyone made plans. Residents who lived by the beach pressured city counsel to stop the concert because they feared fans would throw trash, beer cans, urinate, etc. all over their yards. Long Beach than told BB they couldn't have concert on beach after plans were made. Lawsuits were filed by sponsors, beach boys and all involved in the concert. At the last minute the owners of the Queen Mary told Beach Boys they could have the concert in their parking lot and so it was held in parking lot. Beach Boys, Wolfman Jack, Charlie Tuna and anyone who spoke at the concert boycotted the city by deciding not to mention the word "Long Beach::/ It was a great concert from what I remember lol

    • @thejiggy22

      @DJ L33 SUPER late here, but Brian recorded "Sweetie" as a demo in 1986, later turning it into "Love Ya," featured on the second version of Sweet Insanity. A studio version of "Sweetie" from 1981 also still exists in the vaults, and features Brian, Al, and Mike on vocals. Lots of interesting stuff was recorded for the followup album to KTSA, commonly known as "Cousins, Friends and Brothers." Such tracks intended for the project included "City Blues" (never properly recorded as a BBs song; only circulates as a demo on the Cocaine Sessions boot), "Night Bloomin' Jasmine," "Sweetie," "Stevie," "I'm a Man" (a Brian original), a supposedly very good Brian/Mike rocker entitled "Bucks," and Bruce also mentioned wanting to include "Da Doo Ron Ron" from the KTSA sessions. Can also imagine Mike wanting to finish up "Goin' to the Beach" for the album, considering his obsession with it over the years. But anyways, here's a link to the 1986 demo if you haven't heard it by now! czcams.com/video/KCVzeDxgJjc/video.html

  • @KRAZEEIZATION
    @KRAZEEIZATION Před rokem +3

    Reading David Leaf’s book on the band, this concert was a disaster according to Bruce Johnson. Remember Carl took a break from the group in 1981 because of sloppy performances and lack of great new music.
    The band didn’t release another album until 1985 after the disappointing Keeping The Summer Alive in 1980. Dennis tragically drowned in late 1983. By the late 70s the band became a parody of themselves with Brian’s mental issues and lack of creativity. The pressure by Love and Jardine to keep the band together playing the hits versus Brian’s wish to go solo and create on his own along with Carl sabbatical from the group left us with this hotch potch performance and possibly the lowest point in the band’s incredible career. If you’re a fan, this is actually hard to watch, just like Elvis a few months from the end.

    On Don't Worry Baby, I thought it was brave of Brian to at least _attempt_ his signature highs which he once did so effortlessly. It was his special God sauce. His voice got stronger later once he got healthy, but the highs never returned. I'm always curious the year an artist loses The Highs. Looks like Brian lost his around this time.
