Yeah ik it’s just acting, but that’s the reality of a lot of hs students today applying to just ivys and having no safety schools 😭
Yep! It’s insanely risky!!
What's a safety school
Please tell
a safety school is a college I'd say you have at least a 70 or 80% chance of getting in. How do you know this? by the school's acceptance rate and what kinds of students they take and how those students' credentials match your credentials@@Aditya_Mishra001
@@CassandraHsiao Thank you didi ✨🙏🌸
My sister did what Devi did & luckily she got into one of the ivy’s (UPenn) she had one safety school but the rest were all ivies. She got into the safety as well too
Gasp! Risky! Happy it worked out for your sister though but definitely would advise a more balanced list!
@@CassandraHsiaohey does her getting rejected by the rest of the Ivy League schools say something about UPenn? Like they have an easy admission criteria and they take any student which don’t go to Harvard and Stanford? Is it true? I have heard about this.

@@fionayitongxie7595 yup! Also, if ur fulfilling institutional needs of a certain college! U will get in fs if u have amazing essays too
yess. There are some really great small liberal arts colleges. Good education is not limited to only ivy-league colleges
Exactlyyyyy! Like please look at everything, what used to be just a safety for me is now one of my top choices bc I actually looked into it 😭 what matters isn't prestige but what works best for YOU and what YOU want!
And even if the ivies are exactly what you want, taking a gamble like that is really risky without a safety. But fortunately, as some commenters said, community college/transfer is a great option if one ends up in a Devi situation 💖💖
MIT and Stanford aren't even ivy leagues and they are among the top 5 universities on the planet. In fact, today MIT is the best university in the world.

I didn’t really consider a 2 year college until midsummer after I graduated. But once I realized I could get through my associates degree without taking out any loans, and get easily transferred to a bigger school, I realized I had made a good choice.
You made a great choice!!! Yes there are so many paths to higher education!
would you mind telling me the name of that college? i’m currently in the process of trying to navigate my life and considering where to go for university.
@@lordfarquaad3086I don't know what college montygreen went to, but I had a similar situation
I'm going to a community college right now, and there's a program where they pay for all the classes you take your first two years there. I don't think all community colleges have this, but even the ones that don't can really cut down your tuition by quite a lot
What I'm doing is spending 2 years at a community college and then transferring to a university.
There does tend to be a lot of stigma about community college but it definitely helps with paying for college, since you're not paying for all 4 years at a university
@@lordfarquaad3086 she/hes most probably talking about a community college :) you can do 2 years of college there and then transfer to a 4 year college to you your third and fourth year of undergrad education
It might not have been a smart decision to only apply to ivys. But out of any other tv show characters, Devi is one of the only characters who truely deserved to get into an ivy and in real life probably would have.
i agree! she worked so hard and got amazing grades and slayed in debate. unfortunately there needs to be an extra edge that makes her unique to get into the ivies... but perhaps she had other unique extracurriculars up her sleeve too we just didn't see!
Definitely not. To be frank, her ECs were terrible
@m1dos391 I'm with you. She worked hard, but she had no real passion outside wanting to go to Princeton. What did she want to do once she got there and after she graduated? We don't know, because the only things she does are what will look good on her college application. In real life, I suspect that will not make you a good candidate.
@@angelicasmodelyou're talking like most people have plans for what they want to do after college. news flash: no one knows that. your plans almost always change during college.

For once, I would like to see a smart and nerdy character apply for/attend state universities or community colleges. Hollywood acts like state universities or community colleges are for slacker students only. I had plenty of smart, nerdy, and hardworking friends in high school, and none of them went to an Ivy League college. Most of them attended state or city universities (like UT, UH, Texas A&M, etc.), and some even went to community colleges like Lone Star, Blinn, or HCC.
Apply to the community college around your areas dont go in debt and you can always transfers credits

I am an Indian med student, studying ayurveda and naturopathy. My older brother is an engineer. We were naturally gifted at studies, but despite that it was very difficult to get admission in a good college for both of us (he studied in an NIT). But the saddest thing is that not everyone who works hard gets good marks in these exams, which are the ones that decide our future. There was a guy in my brother's highschool. Waa extremely kind & smart, but ended up failing the engineering entrance exam. Took it again next year, was unable to pass it again. And sadly in 2017 he exited himself because of depression and sense of failure. Another friend of mine who was also very good at studies applied into American universities but got rejected. It was very shocking, but it was just plain racism I believe. Indians are always very much discriminated against in the west for some reason and it's the truth. Americans have it easier compared to us, not trying to be rude, just stating facts. You people can actually get into college by many ways other than having good grades. Like quotas, submitying essays and stuff. But we have it worse here. Also, the competition is much much worse than you can imagine. So please don't waste that opportunity.
Best of luck for ur Neet….
I have like 3 safety state schools planned and then 3 ivies I’m going to apply to. Let you know if get in in 5 years
Trust me, Ivy League are overrated. Go to a community college for your undergrad, you’ll save so much money.
My uncle basically kind of did the same thing to me. The school that his son got into is like amazing and I'm very happy for him but he was just like why don't you try to go to that school instead.. 🙃🙃🙃 First off even if I had the grades. I think that just because it's a bigger school doesn't mean that it's better. Also I think that my school program wise is a lot better. Like yeah it's not an ivy League school but it is the only school in Georgia that has my program and it's like the 8th one in the country. ,🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
Yes it’s all about right match, not about the name/brand! Glad you found a school that suits you!!
Colleges are for networking, good alumni's helps a lot that's why MIT/Harvard are the way they are.
People who think colleges will educate them, nope, you will study on your own most of the stuff.@@CassandraHsiao
where I'm from (unless you're rich and go to one of the 2 rich college prep private schools in the state), you don't go to Ivy Leagues. Even if u got a 4.0, 36 ACT, in a bunch of clubs, you're a minority and get into every Ivy League. That doesn't mean u go for free or will even get scholarships from them. Getting in is 1 thing but affording it is another. The top most perfect students here usually just go to 1 of the universities here, and completely free too.
Ivy League schools have some of the best financial aid programs in the country
There are merit based and need based scholarships in Ivy League schools.
As long as you prove you are a top ranker with a good profile, you will get the merit based.
Or just prove you are poor by showing your family annual income details, you will get the need based one.
@@peak_911 u get those at every college. But it still cost a lot. Could get into an ivy league, have scholarship, & go into debt to go there OR go the school here completely free. I feel like the bar for merit based scholarships r higher there bc every student would meet it if it wasnt
Well ofc, but you can do part time, if international students can do that, why can't you?
it's funny when American students say they can't pay off tuition fees, while you literally have more freedom than international kids in your college.
1. Do part time on/off campus.
2. Internships(they might cover your whole fees0
3, Choose the right course
4. RA/TA if possible though i doubt it is possible, mostly phd grads are allowed @@Ad-qt8lx

Omg i just read ur college essay on an article haha
I applied to one college. Stupid I know. I got in anyway, and I’m on track to graduate in May!
"Safety" aside, applying to schools that you are overqualified for is how you get merit scholarships and full rides.
I applied to 2 universities, but they were in Canada lol. Got into both and ended up going to McGill so I guess it worked out.
Yeah, I kind of did what David did except that I live in Kentucky and I'm broke so I can only afford $50 1 time so I applied to wku and I'm just gonna hope for the best.
I only applied to Umich as my first and only choice. No backups, not even early action. Still got accepted, lol.
Out of the 6 colleges im going to apply to only 2 are ivy leagues, one is a safety and the other 3 are in the middle
State colleges are still good
nah
if you don't wanna move far away
Honestly go to a community college and if you’re getting a law degree or med school then go to a nice school. Don’t pay for Ivy League for your undergrad. I used to sell marketing and finance courseware for schools (including lesson plans, homework, simulations, etc) and many community colleges used this courseware as WELL AS HARVARD! So some students were paying 20x the amount for the same course.
I’m going to apply to Yale, temple, and a safety school
I don’t understand what Ivy or safety school. Can someone explain it to me? Why is it bad Devi only apply to the Ivy school
Ivy schools are elite universities in America with very low acceptance rates meaning its very difficult to get in. Typically if your applying for an ivy league, you would have a safety school which is a college with a higher acceptance rate meaning its easier to get in so that way even if you get rejected from the Ivies, you still have a back up college
Ivy leagues are a group of colleges and universities that are considered highly prestigious and they are pretty hard to get into

Ivy Leagues are only considered Ivy leagues because of their good sports programs too. So don’t go for the name go for what you’re looking for, like public, private, liberal arts, community, competitive, big classes, small classes.

The reality is that if you waitlisted at Princeton. You could definitely get into most University of California except maybe UCLA/UCB. Pretty fucking stupid lol
ivy league is a pretentious scam. just go to the cheapest option for christs sake
Half of the Ivies aren’t even that good. I mean they’re good, but not “Ivy” good. I’m looking at you Dartmouth 👀
*gasp* my parents don't believe in what you just said and couldn't care less.
You said , " don't be like Devi and just apply in ivy leagues. That is a very dumb decision."
So what's your advice?
Also apply to some unis with lower entry requirements that you’re more likely to get in as backup for safety just in case you get rejected by the competitive ones.
🗣️YALE🔊🦇🦇🧪🧪
Even Cornell
But (I'm not american) can't she just apply to other unis after that? Or are you only allowed to apply once in your life
you can take a gap year and reapply (which I think is quite rare), or (more common) you can pick a different school and try to transfer in again. However the odds of getting in after rejection are very low
unless you increase your chances by doing something which no other did, change your SOP, maybe give SATs again if low, and participate in any extracurricular
best way is you tell them about financial need that you were working part time to help out your family.@@CassandraHsiao
It's because of the deadlines to apply for a certain year. By the time the decision comes out for the Ivy league schools, the application deadline will have already passed for schools that are the next level right after as far as academic reputation. There are state universities with much later application deadlines that likely would still have been an option for Devi. But this would mean going much further down her preferences, like going from Plan A to Plan G because she arrogantly skipped Plans B - F.
@@yader91 but she can apply to those good colleges the next year right? So Whats the problem
Eh, it might be an acceptable move if you go to a “feeder” school and your college counselor thinks you would get into those schools. Honestly, if I were Devi’s mom I would send her to a prep school since the family had a high income and was quite ambitious.
Ah yes that’s the season 3 plot line of her deciding not to go to a school like that! It seemed like a good fit for her and possibly in real life Devi would’ve gone but because it’s a tv show they had to keep her in California 😂 so we could have season 4!
My son isn’t even applying to a T20 school with 4.7/1500 international ECs, varsity cpt, killer teacher letters and more

there are so many! Nearly 4000 schools to chose from. Different schools from public schools to research-focused schools to trade schools to small liberal arts colleges.
@@CassandraHsiao there are, but it's really hard to know about them and their best courses cause I don't actually live in US.

yes, you should apply to a variety of reach, match, and safety schools! I would recommend this book "Getting into A Top College" by Pria Chatterjee, who breaks down the top schools in the US and where they may fall between reach, match, and safety ranks.
@@CassandraHsiao thank you so much for the recommendation. Will do consider reading.🤗

safety schools are a smart idea no matter what, it doesnt take an ivy league student to recognize that
