The WORST Refereeing You Will Ever See... | Springboks vs Australia 2022

  • You wanted proof, here it is. Todays game in The Rugby Championship between South Africa and Australia, was one of the worst and most one sided refereeing I have ever seen. Where to start? Paul Williams was absolutely horrendous with his consistency. The way he handled the rucks was just plain horrible. He just ignored Australia when they neck rolled South African players or when they entered for the ruck, but he was quick to penalize South Africa when they infringed at the breakdown. The sad part about this is that quite a few of these decisions actually resulted in points for Australia in also took points away from South Africa. So, I'll say it again. This results was influenced by bad officiating. If South Africa had any other game, we win that with no sweat.
Also it is ridiculous how Marika Koroibete gets praised for his performance when he landed 3 cheap shots to South African players. On 3 occasions he lowered his shoulder and dived recklessly at South African players. And not once did he get penalized. World Rugby is quick to hand out red cards for head to head clashed, but simply just ignored it today. Where is the consistency? As for the Mapimpi tackle, that was just ridiculous that the ref deemed him to use arms in the tackle. His hands never had any motion to wrap around the ball carrier. He just recklessly charged in with his shoulder and prevents a try being scored. Yet the ref saw something else. Then there was the Faf de Klerk yellow card when Nic White dived to milk a penalty. That moment from the ref and Nic White was just disgraceful and should never happen rugby.
It was simply one of the worst refereeing performances that I've seen in quite some time. Yet, Nothing will ever happen because World Rugby require refs to take accountability for their performances. Another week where Springbok players and coaches will get destroyed by fans and media. That is accepted, but say one bad word of the ref, then it's against the spirit of the game. Rugby is just becoming a joke.

Even as an Aussie and rugby player myself, it was really hard to enjoy the game when most of our scores were off of illegitimate penalties and uneven decisions from the ref. This is not the first time South Africa have been hard done by refs in recent times either. Would like to see some serious improvements in referee abilities for the world cup next year or we could be looking at a lot of upsets that do not belong in this sport based on respect.

Spot on. There is a team of officials who should keep a closer watch on the game, especially the TMO who has the benefit of replays. If he thinks he spots foul play he should check check with the ref and review it.

It is not just the referee. Half of these decisions happens in front of the assistant referees. They should raise this as well. The whole officiating team from referee, to ARs to TMOs are responsible. Referee can't be anywhere and they will miss things that the TV will see, but the killer is consistencies in decisions and the fact that referees ignore rules of the game. If the a throw in the line-out is skew, it is skew - why do you have rules then if you do not enforce them. If you allow skew throws, then the defending team must be allowed to jump early or across the line to try and steal the ball...

Honestly, when a referee misses obvious dangerous or illegal tackles/ collisions and does nothing to address the issue (including the whole referee team - touch judges and TMO), those involved should be penalized in some way. And when inconsistencies occur throughout a game, there should be an outside board that decides whether there were reasons for the negligence or if it was intentional. These are important matches, and having final results so heavily affected, it is crazy not to have something in place to avoid it. Reward good refs and penalize bad ones. I have thought long and hard of a possible solution and finally came up with something viable. World Rugby should introduce a system where each captain gets 3 reviews of the decision made and it has to be taken to the TMO to look from all angles to ensure the right call has been made. If it is found that the wrong call has been made, the captain stays with 3 reviews, otherwise moves down to 2 and so on. The same system as what applies in cricket and tennis, where the players have been right multiple times. The reason for only 3 reviews, is to ensure time is not wasted by unnecessary reviews. A change has to be made. Today's game has really changed how I view world rugby. It is heartbreaking that it is now extremely clear that a team can work extremely hard for days, weeks, months and even years and on the day of the match, there is a VERY real possibility of a referee destroying the entire game, resulting in the team who drew the short stick with a minimal possibility of winning, no matter how they play.

One thing a lot of players have learnt is to question a decision once, whether you agree with his decision or not it’s in your best interest or you might find yourself with a heavy penalty. Whenever he referees, you know the game is going to be interesting.
I watched the game and I thought both teams were getting bad calls, however Boks seemed to be unfairly treated more they often. To be honest I think the Boks don’t use their backs enough. The crash bash method doesn’t necessarily work with teams like Australia, NZ and the Puma’s because they’ll front up in the forwards and will run the back line at any opportunity.
I do think they need to use their backs a little more against Australia and if they don’t they will unlikely win.

Well this video clearly shows 2 Australian tries as a result of bad officiating and one where the Springboks were 3 metres from the tryline and we were penalized. Also, another possible 3 points were not given to us at that scrum which was shown that their loosehead prop was not scrumming straight. That is 14 points less to Australia and at least 7 to the Springboks.
When people stop thinking that referee's does not have an impact on the result of the game, is delusional.
IRB has made the rules so that the referee can penalize any team at almost any ruck. So if it is a close game, the referee can easily decide which team he wants to win.

Havent watched the game, but refereeing like this have been going against Springboks since 2011. Lawrence was fired and banned from rugby because he let the aussies win that quarter final against the boks. We all seeking interference from world rugby, but they feel a fuck, and that is why Joubert retired, because 1 mistake from South African ref and you get sacked to currie cup level. But fools like this and Pearce gets to become the greatest refs, because they support the aussies and all blacks. South Africa is the best rugby team in the world by far, and it hurts world rugby to see us win. Foster is again infront of a firing squad, because they had no ref to favor them today, but next weekend they will win argentina, because something mist be done to protect their image. Same goes for these fools in yellow, they just like their cricket team, if they cant win they need to find a way to cheat. This hate will continue for years to come, so brace yourselves my fellow springbokkies

I didn't watch the game either just the highlights but this was shit consistency as seen in this vid, I'm a new zealander hard maori at that got more respect for the Boks then the Ozzies tbh its funny how every country in the world talk shit about us(nz) and yet these countries around the world are 5 - 10 times bigger then our country let alone the number of population too
Referees end of the day should be made accountable for these calls that could potentially be the deciding factor for a win in most cases but Mainly for the safety and well being of each individual when coming into contact with the head believe me im pretty sure most of us like to see a good straight solid hit at least once in a game
SA are the world Champs but at this stage tbh are down on the rankings it wont take long for them and the Abz to be back to there normal form which I can't wait for
For me n probably most of nz is asking the question AGAIN have we got the right coach or are some players not ready f'knows, as hard as it was to watch the Ireland series in nz that was absolutely mud
Just wanted to share my thoughts and that we don't rely on the refs to make us win thats what caught my eye was this comment other then this MUCH love for SA Rugby can't wait till they start hammering teams again

International rugby has been very strange lately. One week one team will smash the opposition only to get smashed the following week? Seems like Union could be turning into WWE to make it more entertaining after the All Blacks dominated for so many years it got boring knowing who would win every test.

I am deff on the side of the referee's having a huge impact on whats happening. Week to week we are getting TOTALLY different calls for the same offences. The AB game was the same as this (probably more calls both ways though to be fair in that one but some of them are key decisions that swing games) the AB's deff arent right but they are also getting the bad end of the rub on alot of calls atm. But on this game that Aussie winger basically knew he could just run around head butting guys all game once he did that first one and thats exactly what happened for the rest of the game.
