- A reorchestration of Bosun Bill from Sea of Thieves. It was originally composed by Robin Beanland and therefore all rights go to him and to Rare Ltd.
The soundtrack to SOT is excellent. Every background song, every shanty, every incidental cue conveys so much and so perfectly represents the core aspects of the game. Hats off to Mr. Beanland's amazing work.
The game screenshot, Sea of Thieves logo and music are all the original property of Rare Ltd., and therefore all rights belong to them!

Bosun Bill was known throughout the port.
A truly dreadful pirate who was always getting caught.
Not one scheme for stealing could he hatch.
'cause someone would spot,
the treasure he'd got.
And Bill they'd snatch!
One day Bill awoke lying on a distant beach.
The last of his grog was just out of reach.
He groped around with trembling hands.
And stuck something in the sand!
He'd stumbled upon a part.
Of an ancient chart.
Stained and torn, the old map told.
The way to find a stash of buried gold so...
Bosun Bill, set out to find a crew.
But everyone he asked replied "I'll never sail with you!"
'Til at last, he plied a man with ale.
To lend him his craft, a rickety raft.
Then Bill set sail!
All by himself, Bill trembled in the dark.
He lost both his boots and hat to a shark.
He followed the chart 'til at last he saw.
The gleam of a far-off shore.
The trail led into a cave.
Silent as the grave.
Bill stood gaping at what he saw.
A hoard of treasure piled from roof to floor.
Bosun Bill stuffed treasure into his sack.
He loaded up the boat, but he heard a mighty crack.
He'd taken to much plunder when he should have kept it light.
The raft and all the gold sank out of sight.
Bosun Bill let out a terrible curse.
He'd had a chance at glory but he'd only come out worse!
To this day, he's trapped on the island still.
Not very clever.
Worst pirate ever,
It's Booo... Sun... Bill!
Oh, Bill.
This is 100% the version of bosun bill that I’ve ever heard
I mean how could you not like it!?
I dunno. The rawness of playing it in-game with just a hurdy gurdy, banjo, concertina and drum gives it that shanty charm. This is too produced.
@Cheap Tactics I can definitely understand that. Robin Beanland and the music team at Rare so perfectly captured that piratey vibe - rough playing and dead notes, half broken-but still working (perfectly chosen) instruments when all played together bring each and every one of the shanties to life in a way that no other approach would have.
With every song I cover, I always maintain the fact that there's no better way to listen to a piece than the way the composer originally intended, and I think this is especially so in the case of Sea of Thieves's soundtrack. My main goal here was to pay homage to some of Robin's older N64 Rareware era works and infuse some of my own style, while still maintaining a sense of semblance of the original piece, but I agree this approach was probably leaning a little to heavily towards the older feel of Rare's soundtracks without paying enough attention to the core aspect of what makes the music in their new and upcoming games so fantastic.
i agree 100% the version ever heard
This is the most collorfull Sea of Thieves remix i've ever heard! Keep it up!
Thank you very much!
@@MatthewNewsomeComposer Cant wait to hear the "grogg mayles", and "summon the megalodon" :)
Its wacky. Sounds like it can be in a Conker game
The fact something as amazing as this was produced by a person with so little subs.
You deserve so many more subs man.
Ctrl Alt Repeat - thank you so, so much! That honestly means so much!
@@MatthewNewsomeComposer As a big fan of stuff like this, especially Sea of Thieves, this caught me off guard when checking your subs, seeing to like to dislike ratio and seeing the comments. I love the instruments used! You did very well.
Everyone needs to turn the subtitles on right now and rewatch this video.
You really deserve way more subs man
Thank you so much! That means a lot to hear : )
I heard a wee bit of Sloprano in here. Nice music, I love Beanland!
Thank you so much! While arranging it, I listened to some of Robin's older music (the Conker soundtrack in particular), and tried to throw in a few references here and there with the instrumentation.
Sorry to burst your bubble but if you mean the part at: 2:29
That was in the original song
@@TheExperienceYT Yeah, it is in the original, too, because is very likely a callback to Sloparano...
@@TheExperienceYT I think what’s he’s talking about is the cow ribs that u can faintly hear
what the fuck what is this I dont remember commenting that
Was always my favourite shanty of the whole bunch and this just makes it better!
This is by far the best Bosun Bill cover there is out there. Congratulations!
The captions are awsome
It sounds like something I would hear in a pirate movie! This is great!
It's been a year but pirate songs can't get old. Lovely work
Awesome work. Few times I can say that a reorchestration is as good as the original.
Thank you so much - I'm glad that you enjoyed it! It took a while to try and get that perfect balance between the orchestra and the solo instruments. Too much orchestra and you lose what made the original so amazing and pirate-y, too much of the solo instruments and there's really nothing much there to differentiate it from the original!
@@MatthewNewsomeComposer Seems like you've got your head screwed on tight. Not often you see someone with an understanding of what makes a re-orchestration good. But you sure do. Keep at it.
@@dillhole1008 Thank you so much for the words of encouragement! I really appreciate it!

Rare sure do know how to pen a grand backstory within all these amazing shanties - so awesome the extent they go to just for some extra worldbuilding!
This is really good. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much! : )
I swear this song is also meant to be played with an orchestra! Good job man!! Keep it up, i loved itttt
Nice!!! Love the background too :)
Seeing the captions made me laugh
This is masterful! You did an amazing job!
Thank you so much! ^_^
I love the subtitles
id like to hear this from a huge symphony
Great, would be even better if you did more sea of thieves :)
Thank you! Apologies for my late reply, but I've got the other shanties lined up on my to-do list - so I'll get around to doing them eventually.
@@MatthewNewsomeComposer I hope you do all of the sea of theives tracks after your other shanties. grogg mayles is cool
This is great song cant lie❤
Seriously, this would be so cool played by an actual orchestra... I would enjoy playing this so much! That's great job, thank you!
Great work !
Thank you very much! : )
Masterpiece !
Surprised that this version hasn’t replaced the one in game yet
Thank you so much! That really means a lot - it would be absolutely amazing if that were to happen in some way shape or form, that's for sure!
Digital Colt 15-man band
Bro looks like the evil ghost pirate le chuck had a crossover with sot 10/10
Why's this better then the original
Nice ✨
Love it! Sounds even smoother than original to me. Awesome work!
Thank you! ^_^
Sounds like a silly scene or something which makes so love able
Can I use this in an eventual Italian cover of the song?
I PixelGamers - Sure thing! Best of luck with your cover!
Dude, your music is simply AWESOME!
I know this is a lot to ask since i assume you do most of your work for free, but would you mind if i'd use portions of your work in my videos? I'd credit you everytime i do so of course.
Thank you so much! I definitely wouldn't mind at all! : )
Best version of the song 😎
Y'know, I've always wondered what island Bosun Bill got stranded on.
The lyrics state that the island and the treasure it had is ancient and the island also had a cave, perhaps the somewhere in the Ancient Isles or maybe even the Shores of Gold?
Back when Rare first started adding new content to the game, I figured they'd do a Tall Tale centred around this story - still hoping they'll explore it in greater detail one day!
Это прекрасно!
Thank you so much! (Вы очень добры!)
very cool
250th sub!
I really wish I could play this on my bass 😭
Waiting for more songs from Sea Of Thieves
(a secret to everybody but I may or may not be currently working on Stitcher's Sorrow :) more Sea of Thieves very soon!)
Subbed truky deserve it
Truly
0:11 thank me later
thank you, but later
I thank you now.
Thank you.
Thank now
thank you (later)
This is great. What did you make this with???
Thank you so very much! I started by listening to the original and notated/transcribed everything into Sibelius, after which I exported the project's MIDI data into Logic Pro X. From there I used a whole bunch of high-quality sample libraries and virtual instruments (as well as some live recorded instruments, like one of the various different accordions) to enrichen the sound and create an entire virtual orchestra. After some last arrangement changes, mixing and mastering, it is as you hear it now!
I was here before this composer got a shit ton of subs
Sea of thieves beatiful music
🕺
Wow, this is amazing! You deserve much more subs, sadly most people only listen to trash music these days, anyway is there any chance you could do Becalmed or Stitchers Sorrow, i absolutely love those 2 and you would do an amazing job!
Thank you so very, very much! That really means a lot to hear - I've recently been making a list of some songs to cover after a bit of a break and I'll definitely add those 2 to the list, they're such amazing tunes!
I have a question for you!
Which DAW do you use?
I am looking to getting into this type of production and I currently use Logic Pro X. Is there a better one?
Hi there! Choosing a DAW can be quite tricky, as they are all similar yet subtly different from each other. I personally use a combination of Logic Pro X (mainly as it was the first I learnt) for MIDI editing, composing and virtual orchestration and then Pro Tools for mixing, audio editing and recording only, as it absolutely excels at that. This multi-daw setup is only required of me as it's industry standard to deliver stems for soundtracks and scores in a ProTools format, and for the most part, Logic can do both audio and MIDI quite well, whereas I've found Pro Tools MIDI engine to be not quite as intuitive. There are others like Ableton Live which is more for performance really (but I'd also recommend trying out, as I've a few friends who make beats say they find it easier to manage) and also Cubase, which to the best of my knowledge is much like Logic and then also FL Studio which while originally only for Windows has branched out to OSX as well. From what I know it's also just another all rounder. Really in the end all it comes down to is using whatever you find comfortable and helps you write better and more efficiently. Lots of DAWs have trials you can use to try them out for a bit, so feel free to experiment, but if you find Logic is working well for you now, then by all means stick with it!
Hope this helps, and best of luck with you music making!
@@MatthewNewsomeComposer Thanks for the help mate! I am thinking of getting FL Studio, but it costs quite a lot. I also currently have Pro Tools and I will try to learn them as well.
Thanks so much!
Please, please, please - watch this with the CC on hahaha
Can you release sheet music for this?
AHOY MATEY
Ahoy!
@@MatthewNewsomeComposer Are you ready (kids) for the new update ?!
I sure am! Can't wait to head back onto the seas with the one and only Captain Jack Sparrow!
@@MatthewNewsomeComposer OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH
Man i feel sorry for bosun,he just want to get some gold and get cursed instead
Why don't you work at rare? Or xbox
That honestly would be amazing and a position working at Rare is something I've long dreamed of - but unfortunately jobs and especially jobs to do with music are extremely hard to come by at both Microsoft/Xbox and Rare.
Bosun Bill
was ugly, fat and dumb
He liked to sniff his fingers after scratchin' at his bum
His breath would stink
Of cabbage and sardines
The things that he would say n' do were most obscene
In the morning he would drink and rant and roar
At noon he would croon,
and at night he would snore
When he'd awake, he's stretch and sing,
"god it's good to be the pirate king!"
He'd wander around the port
He'd belch and fart and snort
Nobody liked him, but all would agree
T'was no-one else as pirate-y as he!
